RECORD
Well it may be hard for some of us to believe but here we are all ready, Mother’s Day 2017
For 103 years ever since Woodrow Wilson first signed the proclamation in the U.S. the second Sunday of May had been the day set aside to celebrate all things Mom
And why not?
There is an awful lot about motherhood that ought to be celebrated
But it can very easy in a day that is filled with thankless and even unnoticed tasks for Moms to feel less than appreciated so that even they begin to lose the awe that we should all feel towards this important role
And so this morning I want to remind the all the ladies who are Moms, all the ladies who one day WILL be Moms and the rest of us who have a Mom just how important they are and why
To begin with allow me to take you all the way back to the beginning when God was first forming the earth and all that inhabit it, records
Now because the Bible was written in mostly masculine terminology with phrases like God as a Father, the significance of this verse often goes right over our head
Let’s read it again but this time let’s read it from The Message Bible and slow it down a bit, “God created human beings; He created them godlike, reflecting God’s nature.
He created them male and female”
Now just before I get into the body of my message this morning I want to share with you one of the newest and most accurate theologies concerning the creation of mankind
In fact it’s so new that I just only recently came up with it
When God decided to create mankind He first created Adam but then decided that it wasn’t good for Adam to be alone so He created Eve
Now have you ever wondered why it was a female that God created to be a helper for Adam?
I mean why not grab another ball of dirt and make a fishing buddy for him, someone he could understand and relate to?
Why this complicated, difficult to understand, all-be-it, beautiful looking female?
I believe that the answer is much more simple than we realize, God HAD to create woman because it was impossible for Him to fit all of His Godly nature into just man and so there are aspects of God’s nature that are present in women that men just seem to miss out on
And there is no better way to prove my theory than to take a look at motherhood and see how it is that the motherly nature that women have is a direct reflection of God’s nature
This morning I want to give you four examples from the scriptures of how Moms directly reflect the nature of God, perhaps without even realizing it
The first image is that of a mid-wife or deliverer and for that we turn to ,
David writes of God, “And to think you were my midwife at birth, setting me at my mother’s breasts!
When I left the womb you cradled me; since the moment of birth you have been my God.” (The Message)
Midwives may not be a popular today as they once were but back in the time when David wrote this they were absolutely essential
The mortality rate during childbirth was deplorably by today’s standards and many women and their children did not make it through the process making the role of the midwife essential
The midwife was there when things were at their most dangerous, the midwife was there in those moments where life and death hung in the balance and often bringing life back into a situation that seemed like certain death
Now I have no problem in admitting to you this morning that, as a man, I would make a terrible midwife, I just don’t have what it takes, I don’t have the godly nature for it
Liane can attest to that because while I was present for the birth of both of our girls, I was a little less that useful
God on the other hand is full of this quality, it’s His nature for when troubles surround us and when things seem at their darkest we can call upon the midwife, the God who delivers, the God who brings life into a situation that looked like it was ending in death
Apparently that wasn’t a part of the image of God that Adam was given but there’s no denying that He gave it to Eve and that nature has carried on down through from mother to mother in all generations
The second image of God that we see in mothers is also found in the Psalms and this time in
David refers to God as a knitter, craftsman, creator
Now I am not saying that men don’t knit, or that they can’t knit or even shouldn’t knit but this nature is far more prevalent in women
Again think back to a time before there was Baby Gap and all the retail stores that we have today, think back to a time where if you wanted to clothe your kids you were going to have to be creative and that just does not come under the heading of Dad
Just ask Liane about the time when she was pregnant with Emily and left me with Laurie for an afternoon
The two of had a blast culminating in playing in the sprinkler on the front lawn much to the aghast of Liane who, when she pulled in during our frolicking, pointed out that I had put Laurie’s bathing suit on her backwards for all of the neighbors to see
Men are just not cut out for that sort of thing and so God entrusted the mothers with His nature of provision and care
As a side note let me just point out to each and every person here this morning that more often than not knitting is done for a purpose
My Mom knits and each winter when they go to Florida she will knit a bunch of Baby ensembles for me to give to the pregnancy care center or others as we decide to
I say this to remind you that God knit you together not as some random pattern but for a purpose, for a reason and He doesn’t want to see you just sitting in some closet but rather He wants to see you fulfilling the purpose that He had in making you
Okay that point was for free, now let’s get back to the sermon, the third image that God placed into women in general and Moms more specifically is the image of mother hen which we find in
When we were living and Pastoring in Quadeville our backyard was always filled with wildlife, from moose to deer, to fox to bears, big small and everything in between we saw it, but only two of these special animals decided to adopt us
Many of you met the one who was my special little cat that the girls named Itty Bitty, but the other one you never got to meet
That was a chicken that we named Betsy
We still to this day have no idea where Betsy came from but she decided that she liked our yard and she wanted to be our pet
I don’t think that I have ever laughed so hard as the day I looked out our dining room window to see Emily running all over the back yard trying to catch Betsy with a butterfly net
But Betsy refused to allow herself to be caught and there was absolutely nothing that Emily could do to remedy that
Jesus was speaking to Jerusalem and to the Jews in general when He said this
They had rejected Him, they had said no to allowing themselves to be caught by Him and so they were running in every which direction refusing His attempts to bring them in to the fold
I’m not sure that there is a better picture on earth to demonstrate the love and protection of God for His children than the image of a mother’s love and protection for her children
Anyone who has ever spent any amount of time outdoors knows that rule number one of surviving the wild is to never, ever, ever come between a Mom and her offspring
Whether it is a bear, a moose, a wolf, are any other creature, there is a natural instinct that the mother has that says she will protect that baby whatever the cost
It is the nature of God that is placed within the Mom so as we say in our household, “Don’t cross the Mama bear.”
The 4th and final image of God’s nature that we find in motherhood this morning is that God is a housekeeper
Now before the women yell “Heresy” and the men yell “Amen” hear me out and see what the Bible says, this time in
This particular parable is placed in the middle of 2 other well known parables, those being the parable of the lost sheep and the parable of the prodigal son and it’s there for a reason
The reason is because Jesus is trying to illustrate for us what God is like and how God feverishly strives and works to try and keep the family of God from Hell
When I say that God placed inside woman the nature of housekeeping, I am not talking about sweeping and dusting and doing the dishes, I am talking about that attitude of moving Heaven and Hell if necessary to keep the household together and keep it going
Say what you want about
Say what you want but Jesus is very clear hear that God is like a woman, but not just any woman, He’s like a woman who is searching for that which she places great value on
You see it is in God’s nature to not sit idly by while those that He loves so dearly make their way towards eternity in Hell and He placed that nature that image of Himself inside of Eve who has passed it down through the generations
And so that is why no mother can sit idly by and watch as part or all of their family self-destruct, she HAS to do something
There’s a lot that we can learn about God simply by looking at the unique qualities and attributes that He has placed in Mothers
Qualities and attributes that are a part of His image and His nature
Qualities and attributes like being the midwife and deliverer, being the knitter and provider/ nourisher, mother-hen and protector, and the glue that holds the family together.
So Moms we salute you this morning and as men we are in awe of you
Whether you realize it or not you carry in you parts of the image of God that He just did not give to us but that He gave to you in abundance
And so when we think of you, we think of how special you are to us and to God
Let’s pray
