Introduction

Sin is every where yet it is no where.

It was a word that people fairly understood its meaning without any doubt as to what it signified a few years ago but now, those who should know struggle with it.

It is rarely spoken of in churches now, in the society, saying it is like committing a taboo in the public place.

Things that were clearly seen as sin some years ago are now practiced without shame or regard to God.

Today we will be looking at sin as defined by the word of God, the source of sin, the christian and sin and what it all means to us and how we should live.

What is sin?

The study of sin is called harmatiology - hamartia - is Greek word for sin.

In our text, we see the Apostle hinge the point of the section on verse 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Our sin ensures that we fall shot of the glory of God, by obedience to the law we can’t we saved or justified.

All have sinned is the declaration.

So what is sin?

Sin is any lack of conformity unto, or the transgression of, the law of God (WSC q14)

It is placing self in the place of God.

It is conforming and acting according to the desires of the flesh ().

Sin is something we all do (),

Sin is something we all do.

It is engrained in our nature, it looks us in the face every time.

It has tainted the best things we have to offer, it stains even the seemly good thing that comes from us, it follows us, it rides with us, it abides with us and around us, it is the reason we ignore the word of God, we despise the instruction of the most high, we turn our nose at those things he has asked us to face because sin makes them a pleasure to us.

The justice of God not respected

It starts small, then it begins to move from the inch you give it, it wants a foot, from the millimeter, it wants a meter, it is first shows its self as harmless, it is easily rationalized, but all the while, sin does not want to just play with you and got its way, no...it is goal is simple, it wants all of you.

As a result, we call adultery having an affair.

It will impose itself in a pleasurable way, it will start with small boundaries challenge you to cross them and give you the impression that you can easily cross back the other way...As you take the bait, the boundaries expand and the illusion of control increases, the more you stay with sin, the bigger the boundary, the bigger the illusion and then one day, you realize, Sin has total control over you, this is not a state you get to on your own, because as far as you are concerned, Sin gives you a rose-colored glasses through which you view yourself and your actions.

The more you dwell in sin, the more the spectacle does its job.

Our sin starts with our first parents Adam and Eve.

They yielded to the temptation of being like God and knowing good and evil ().

We have all inherited the nature for then on.

Christian and Sin

In , we see the Corinthians addressed as saints, though from the letter, in our usage of the word today we would not have called them such.

Paul was not mistaken because in he addressed them as such again.

It actually seems to be a pattern with him as we see in , and .

He obviously was aware of the sin in the midst of the Corinthian church yet he called them saints.

This he did because the word hagios means “one dedicated to God”.

We are saints because God has dedicated us to himself in Christ Jesus.

We are saints called to live a life that is set apart for God.

How often are we guilty of acts unbecoming of saint?

As we see in , the flesh still pulls at us every single day but we are called to live for him who gave himself for us.

We don’t wallow in sin because we have been saved rather we strive to please the one who has saved us.

We can’t afford to give sin an inch.

We are to call it what it is with the weight the bible places on it.

Conclusion

We have seen how deceitful and troubling sin is and can be in the life of the Christian.

It shows that we need to pray to the Father to deliver us from evil even as we flee from all forms of evil.
