INTRODUCTION
WHO DO YOU TRUST?
Illustration
Many articles, books and blog posts written
If you could watch a week in the life of an author of a magazine, book or blog post how closely would their life would line up with what they teach?
Essence of Hypocrisy: Saying one thing, but doing another: People hate this.
Marriage Counselors - who marriage is in shambles
Pastor who is living in secret sin and shame with a dead faith. (why we might find it hard to follow a pastor)
People lose credibility when they're “DOING” doesn’t match up with their DOCTRINE
BEHAVIOR ≠ BELIEF = HYPOCRISY
What we believe determines how we behave.
Let’s be honest, everyone of us is a hypocrite.
Nobody perfectly lives up what they say they believe whether you are a believer or not.
If you’ve been struggling with not be perfect, you are welcome here, that’s all of us, you are in good company.
But Paul is showing us something different today, a different way to live.
So who are you going to trust?
The CHARACTER OF a man.
This is what Paul is giving us today, he says don’t just look at my teaching, but look at my life, look at my BELIEF & MY BEHAVIOR
PAUL IS SOMEONE WE CAN TRUST.
Why? Let’s jump into our text.
PAUL’S BELIEF & BEHAVIOR** (vv. 10-11)
10 You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11 my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. 12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.
Part 2 from last week
These men...but you Timothy are not these men.
We can trust Paul, because Paul has suffered.
Paul has CREDIBILITY.
- “For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. 9 Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death.”
He has not only taught what he believes, but he has shown us,
and not just in living for it, but suffering for it.
That’s a whole new level.
PEOPLE DON’T SUFFER FOR WHAT THEY DON’T BELIEVE IN.
Initially drew me towards Christianity among all the religions.
Unlike religions like Islam which spread initially through violence, Christianity suffered violence and spread.
People died for what they believed in, they didn’t initially kill for what they believed in.
What have I believed? (v11)
Read the New Testament.
This is what Paul believed.
The Gospel.
How have I BEHAVED? (v11)
My Conduct, aim in life, faith, patience, love, steadfastness, persecutions and suffering.
Antioch, Iconium and Lystra -
Timothy was there - you saw with your own eyes the persecutions I endured.
BUT! - The Lord RESCUED me from them all
BTW - TWO PATHS:
12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.
Godly (Godward) Life → perceptions
(sooner or later)
Ungodly (wayward) life → bad to worse, deceived and deceiving
CREATION DEBATE:
Premise No God = Deceived = determines how we behave
If God exists, it means it matters how I live.
- Given over to our desires.
TIMOTHY’S BELIEF & BEHAVIOR (UNWRITTEN)
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it
TIMOTHY
It will be DIFFICULT (v3:1)
You have FOLLOWED ME but now CONTINUE on with YOU
But you (v14) CONTINUE (abide, remain)
WHAT
In what you have been TAUGHT (head) - DISCIPLED IN
What you BELIEVED (heart) - PISTEUW
- believe in your heart...with the heart one believes and is justified.
FROM WHOM
Me, Paul
Mother and Grandmother
HOW DO I DO THIS?: SCRIPTURES**
15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
ANSWER: THE SCRIPTURES, GOD’S WORD
WHAT ARE THE SCRIPTURES?
Where do they COME FROM?
What is their PURPOSE?
Couple things to Address.
GOD-BREATHED**
What does this mean? - Much debate
Compound word literally combining the words for GOD and BREATH or SPIRIT
Come from God’s own mouth - Breath
Carried by God’s own Spirit
GOD-SPIRED
THEREFORE
All Scripture (Old & New Testaments)
Have their source in God
ALL SCRIPTURE**
Old & New Testament but MORE THAN that
Paul’s very words.
JUSTIFICATION:
Paul claims to speak in the name and with Authority of Christ:
- If anyone thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are a command of the Lord.
Peter calls Paul’s writing Scripture:
- “our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, 16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.
If you want a more thorough argument, your CG Leaders will have access to a short video defending this position.
PURPOSE OF SCRIPTURES**:
Make you WISE FOR SALVATION THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS
OLD TESTAMENT
Show your need for Jesus - wise for salvation
OT points to Christ
600 OT laws
Can't even obey the speed limit
,
“Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”
But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
PROFITABLE - productive, not without effect
Teaching - about who Jesus is
useful to teach us what is tre
Not speculation but revelation
Reprove - convict of sin
make us realize what is wrong in our live
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart
Correction - corrects your path
It corrects us when we are wrong
It is a light to your path.
Training - in doing the right thing, living in rightness
teaches us to do what is right.
All Scripture is inspired by God and is
useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives.
It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. (NLT)
The Scriptures then hold the key to life.
Not because of words on a page but who it points to
Can read it with no effect, combined with Spirit beceomes power of salvation as opposed to folly
Scripture holds the power for endurance. And we need all of these things.
WHAT’S GOING ON HERE:
THE HANDOFF
Paul → Timothy via God’s Word
God’s Word → Timothy → others.
Paul is leaving timothy, he has left timothy.
Paul has been God’s Word to Timothy literally
God’s Word will lead timothy on.
Paul’s own words are Scripture so it is an interesting thing that is going on.
Paul has discipled Timothy through God’s Word (his word)
Now Timothy must go on, but the same resource is available God’s Word, in fact this very letter.
TO WHAT END? SO THAT?
TO EQUIP FOR GOOD WORKS: GOD WORKS
THE RESULT: GOOD WORKS = GOD’S WORK**
Christian Maturity= Faithful Obedience = Obedience of Faith
not saved by our WORKS but rather through conversion and sanctification made READY TO do all kinds of GOOD WORKS. And finally by God’s word, FULLY EQUIPPED to do GOOD WORKS.
IT’s all from God and points to God
Not that we are equipped and able to do every good work,
OH NO, but that we absolutely, desperately, completely, unequivocally, NEED JESUS to do anything
Abide in me, for apart from me you can do nothing. -
Jesus himself modeled this as he depending on the father for everything.
When we live like this...seeped in the Gospel, abiding in it, remaining it, what will happen? FRUIT
WORKS DON’T SAVE US
- “who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began”
MADE READY TO DO WORKS (on the team)
- “Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready (PREPARED) for every good work.”
FULLY EQUIPPED TO DO WORKS (trained and practiced)
- “that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
DOING GOD’S WORK (FOR TIMOTHY)
- “As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.”

Doing God’s Work: Get in the game
PAUL’S LIFE AND EXAMPLE:
NOW, WHAT IS PAUL ACTUALLY TEACHING AND HOW IS HE LIVING?
Not Look at me, how righteous I am, but look at how much I need Jesus.
Can read this in a first pass:
Paul is saying look at me, i’ve tried, and all i’ve tried to do is this: THE LORD RESCUED ME from them all.
I’m a mess, i’m hopeless, i’ve failed, but Jesus has saved me.
THAT IS THE TEACHING he is passing on,
that is how he has lived his life, seeped in the gospel.
A great sinner in need and Christ is a great savior - John NEWTON
LOOK AT MY LIFE:
My teaching : I need Jesus
My conduct : I need Jesus
My aim in Life : I need Jesus
My faith : i need Jesus
My Patience : I really need Jesus
My love : i need Jesus
My persecutions : I need Jesus.
When Jesus is all you have you see that’s all you need
Brother Yuan - Chinese Church Prison (Prison Theology)
GUESS WHAT: Jesus rescued me from them all.
“But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. 10 He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again.”
Paul is NOT talking about how RIGHTEOUS HE IS, that’s not what he means, that’s what we think, that’s what I thought.
NO he is saying, looked at my need and the God who fills it. JESUS
That’s why the scriptures are so IMPORTANT they point us to JESUS
THEY SHOW US OUR NEED (most of us don’t want that)
THEY POINT US TO OUR SAVIOR (all of us really need that)
THEREFORE -
continue on - endure - abide - remain in the WORD
and in FAITH in the Word (believing)
PAUL’S BELIEF (I need the Jesus) = PAUL’S BEHAVIOR (i need Jesus)
STAND WITH ME
THE CALL**
[Build this 1-4]
What does your behavior show you about your belief?
What are you striving after that isn’t gospel?
Where is God’s word teaching and reproving, correcting training?
Where do you absolutely need Jesus?
