Matthew
Sermon on the Mount
Last week, Lord’s Prayer
Completed section detailing how to practice righteousness.
In short, don’t do it like hypocrites to be seen of men, do it for God and God will reward your “secret” righteousness
Introduction:
Jesus teaches a lot on money and possessions (15%)
More than heaven and hell
Money is an issue
I. Rather than live in a way that produces earthly reward, live in a way that produces heavenly reward (19-20)
II.
Your life reflects what you value (21-23)
III.
A Christian cannot serve money (24)
So lets look at these points one at a time
I. Rather than live in a way that produces earthly reward, live in a way that produces heavenly reward (19-20)
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth”
What are Treasures on earth?
Luke 12:13-21
where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,
Observation 1: Earthly treasures, in the end are worthless
“20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven”
What are heavenly treasures?
Lets look look back at the Luke passage
Luke 12:21
What does it mean to be “rich toward God”?
God doesn’t need money
“God owns the cattle on 1,000 hills”
Count God as your riches
Look again at the beatitudes
Matthew 5:3-10
where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
Observation 2: Heavenly treasures never lose value.
Perhaps you say you don’t need treasures in heaven, the LORD will be my treasure.
You’re right, He is one of the treasures.
Why do you think you need treasures?
To praise and worship Him with them.
To be able to give an offering!
II.
Your life reflects what you value (21-23)
III.
A Christian cannot serve money (24)
