Are we praying correctly? When we go before God and ask him for things are we getting it right? How should we pray?

Intro:

What have you done for me lately?
Often this is our approach toward’d God in prayer isn’t it.

Drama

Jesus begins his High Priestly Prayer
As an advocate on behalf of his people and more
Right before Jesus and His disciples go across the Kidron Valley and into the garden where he would be betrayed and handed over to be killed
The Contents of Jesus Prayer
Starts by seeking God’s glory
John 17:1 ESV
When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you,
He calls himself Son
John 17
He puts God the Father’s glory above His own
This solidif
This is odd since He is God
Recognizes God’s Sovereignty
God is the one who has given Jesus authority
Authority to overcome the world
John 16:33 ESV
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
The purpose of this prayer
1. To Glorify God
How?
John 17:4 ESV
I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.
Jesus was obedient and his work was completed
2. Then to ask for the ultimate completed desire
Jesus knew what we need
A restored relationship with God
a relationship that includes being in His presence
John 17:5 ESV
And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.
John 17
True Glory is being in the presence of God
We glorify God by seeking to be in His presence
Illus: GLORIFY Mission statement
We have our faith in the fact that Jesus has restored this relationship
We long and desire actually being in God’s presence
We hope for that day and seek for it
We do so by coming before Him Sunday Mornings for worship
3. Then to express how He glorified God on this earth
He shared with people what God was doing in the world
John 17:6 ESV
“I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.
John 17:
His Redemptive work
His Sovereignty
John 17:7 ESV
Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you.
That Jesus came to implement belief in God’s chosen people
John 17:8 ESV
For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me.

And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
A restored relationship with God through Jesus Christ and faith in him
And, as Jesus prays for here - glorification

Doxology

We have a model of how to pray
We are often like little children and Scripture tells us we do not know how to pray
Romans 8:26 ESV
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
Good prayer starts by glorifying God
Recognizing Him for what He has done in our life
Recognizing Him for what He is currently doing
Asking Him to do the things He has promised to do, not for the things we so often desire
Glorifying God means that we see the work that we are doing as His
What is God doing in my life? What ministry do I have to those around me?
We know we are glorifying God when
We recognize His sovereignty
We recognize the work He has done to restore our relationship
We manifest His name to others
We receive the words of Christ and our faith grows
We rely on His making us understand and believe the truths Jesus gave us
