I. See the need, meet the need!

Acts 4:36–37 KJV 1900
And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus, Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

A. You will have to know the missionaries to do well at this.

B. Make their needs your needs.

C. They will have many needs.

D. Barnabas gave to the need but gave up control of his money and giving.

II. Open doors of fellowship for your brother in Christ.

And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and believed not that he was a disciple. But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.

A. Barnabas, again saw the need as Saul was just wanting to get to his brothers and sisters in Christ.

B. Consider your missionary.

C. Go hear their story and see their heart.

III. He helped others get started.

And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus. And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord. Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch. Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord.

A. What a testimony Barnabas had!

B. Barnabas got excited about the work of God in their life.

C. Think of our missionaries and what they need.

D. Do you ask them how it is going.

IV. He enlisted and equipped others in the ministry.

For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord. Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul:

A. Barnabas had thrown himself into the work with all of his heart but then went looking for help, Saul.

Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

B. Make their ministry yours.

C. Take the students seriously and help them get equipped for the ministry.

V. He was sensitive to the Holy Spirit and always ready to do more ministry.

As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

A. Barnabas was busy and doing a good job but God speaks and wants something else.

B. As you serve the Lord are you remaining sensitive to the Holy Spirit.

C. It wasn’t just about helping others but being ready to do whatever God wanted.

VI. Barnabas was willing to take second place and push another forward in the service of the Lord.

A. God had gifted Paul differently than Barnabas.

Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

B. The hard part of being a yokefellow is that the conversation is about the other person and his ministry.

C. Questions to ask.

i. Can you help others to do what God hasn’t called you to do.

ii. Can you rejoice.

iii. Can you be a blessing and give up control.

VII. Barnabas was simply a great helper.

A. He helped Paul when they went to the church council.

Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.

B. He helped John Mark get his life back on track.

And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do. And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark. But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work. And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus; And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.

C. You can have a great ministry being a helper.
