Strange Happenings

Genesis 6:1–4 HCSB
When mankind began to multiply on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of mankind were beautiful, and they took any they chose as wives for themselves. And the Lord said, “My Spirit will not remain with mankind forever, because they are corrupt. Their days will be 120 years.” The Nephilim were on the earth both in those days and afterward, when the sons of God came to the daughters of mankind, who bore children to them. They were the powerful men of old, the famous men.
If ever there was a divide among scholars around a biblical text, it would be this passage.
Key Players would include
Sons of God....
Daughters of me
Nephilim

Intermarriage between line of Seth and line of Cain

Leading to corruption of the race

Dynastic rulers (sons of the gods) taking women by force

Demonstrating corruption

Fallen angels taking human women

Leading to corruption of the race
Whichever view you choose the conclusion is the same.
Mankind is corrupt.
I believe when God says 120 years, this starts the clock ticking for the flood.
BTW- Some of you want to know which I believe.... Write this down… I don’t know.
Answers in genesis has several articles about this.

Deep Depravity

Genesis 6:5 HCSB
When the Lord saw that man’s wickedness was widespread on the earth and that every scheme his mind thought of was nothing but evil all the time,

Divine Regret

Genesis 6:6–7 HCSB
the Lord regretted that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. Then the Lord said, “I will wipe off from the face of the earth mankind, whom I created, together with the animals, creatures that crawl, and birds of the sky—for I regret that I made them.”
This is not repentance of sin, or a change of mind like God didn’t know what He would do. 30 times in the Bible it teaches that God changes His intention for His righteous purposes. This is one of them as God interacts with mankind’s wickedness.
Do not miss the hurt God experiences here as He contemplates the sad situation of that which He has created. Here we are reminded that God is just in the way He deals with humanity. We are created by Him, and we belong to Him.

Divine Favor

Genesis 6:8 HCSB
Noah, however, found favor in the sight of the Lord.
This is the first occurence of the word GRACE in the Bible. It is rooted in the idea of bending or stooping and shows that God condescends or reaches down to show unmerited favor. Superior to inferior.
Jesus coming to earth is grace. The Holy Spirit dealing with hearts and living within sinners is grace. God stoops down and scoops us up.
Hebrews 11:7 HCSB
By faith Noah, after he was warned about what was not yet seen and motivated by godly fear, built an ark to deliver his family. By faith he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
No doubt the world in Noah’s Day was BAD. It often seems that way here and now. The good news is God wants to show grace through Jesus to all those who would respond to Him by Faith.
