How do you know God loves you? I preach it and you hear it. We read it and we say it all of the time. So, how do you know it? Is it based off of your reception of it?

Intro

Just the Facts Ma’am - Joe Friday’s character on Dragnet
Illus: Jack Webb’s ‘Joe Friday’ character typically used the phrase “All we want are the facts, ma’am” (and sometimes “All we know are the facts ma’am”)
Christianity is based off of facts.
Problem: We have to be careful in making Christianity about how we feel or what we believe to be true.
We believe because it is true.

Drama

Jesus moves from figure of speech to facts
John 16:25 ESV
“I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father.
Why does Jesus do this?
A lack of ability to understand
Illustrations and stories - Things that made sense and were understandable. He came to bring the Kingdom of God and make it relatable to man.
Mankind is confused in our state of sin
Sin entered the world and we have been confused ever sense
Genesis 3:1–7 ESV
Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
Jesus shares with them one important fact
: 1-7
John 16:26–27 ESV
In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
John 16
God loves them. Jesus is going to show them this very fact through his work
John 12:28 ESV
Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”
I came - incarnation
leaving - death on the cross and burial
Resurrection and Ascension - I am leaving the world and going to the Father
This fact leads to Faith
John 16:29–30 ESV
His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.”
John 16:29
The disciples came to a new understanding in their faith
Jesus gives them one warning
John 16:31–32 ESV
Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me.
JOhn 16:31-
They will be scattered and run from what Jesus is put through
They are not capable of walking with Jesus in this portion of his ministry - no man could
Only the God-man Jesus could do this
They could not handle all of this in one encounter -
John 6:12 ESV
And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.”
John 16:12 ESV
“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
The things of God must be given to us in small doses
Jesus gives them a glorious promise
John 16:33 ESV
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
They will experience tribulation and turmoil due to the effects of sin in the world
But, God has given Jesus to overcome the effects of sin in the world
He will make Jesus the King of His Kingdom and over the world
Paul:
1 Corinthians 15:20–28 ESV
But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For “God has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “all things are put in subjection,” it is plain that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him. When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that God may be all in all.

Doctrine

The effects of sin on humans
Original sin has deprived us of an ability to understand the things of God
Without Christ we still would have no ability to understand the work that God did for our salvation
Unless God intervened then we would still be enemies of God
How do you know God loves you?
Progressive Revelation
Through Jesus and His work the things of God become clear
We should approach God’s word through the lens of Christ
His words are simple and understandable when He is involved
Bathe your reading in prayer
Come before the sermon asking for His help too make things clear
Illus: Instruction manual for a piece of furniture
Step - by- Step Some detailed more than others
Redemptive Historical plan of God - small progressive steps revealed throughout the Scriptures
This is How God works in our lives. Yet, we don’t like it - we want control and to know the things of God
Illus: Google is great, instant information. But God doesn’t work that way. He reveals things to us as he chooses.
Jesus Rule as King
Christ lets the disciples know why he came - To overcome the world
“I HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD.” - Present tense
Resurrection and placement on God’s throne
1 Corinthians 15:20–28 ESV
But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. Doxology

God has reversed the effects of sin through Jesus Christ - You have the ability to understand
Jesus words are plan and clear for even the most common man
Illus: Ethiopian eunuch
Philip told by an angel of the Lord to go and he obeyed
Ethiopian court official reading Isaiah
Philip: “Do you understand what you are reading?”
Eunuch: “How can I unless someone guides me?”
Reading - “Abut whom is this speaking?
Acts 8:35 ESV
Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus.
Acts 8:
God has made himself known and still does through His word - This is how we know he loves us!
And,
He has placed Jesus on the throne above all things
He is King and Lord - Today, right now.
This is how you know that God loves you:
So, take heart Jesus has overcome the world
There is no temptation you cannot overcome.
There is no death in Christ that will be excluded form the resurrection.
There is nothing in this life that King Jesus cannot get us through.
His church will prevail - and He is King now
1 John 4:4 ESV
Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
The Lord Jesus sits on his throne and rules and governs his people and keeps our enemies at bay in this life. And, He has already overcome the world. He has already won the victory for a battle that has not yet happened.
Wow, this is how you know God loves you, through the facts.
Could you imagine a general going to war knowing that He has already won the war. Not, hoping or being inspired that it might happen. That is faith in the possibility of a victory. Christians have faith in the fact that Christ has already won the victory and is now our King and will always be our King, and Lord of Lords.
Let us sing praise to Him and glorify Him because He has OVERCOME THE WORLD.
