INTRODUCTION:

1. Continuing last week’s introduction to the Armor of God...

A. We have been looking at .

Ephesians 6:10–13 NKJV
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

1. There are four lessons we need to remember from .

A. We need to be strong in the Lord.

1. As Christians, it is our responsibility to be Godly leaders the world can follow.
Matthew 5:14–16 NKJV
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
<att 5.14-16
2. The church needs strong leaders (Elders) who can lead them into the promise land.
1 Peter 5:2–4 NKJV
2 Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; 3 nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; 4 and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.
3. The church needs strong members to inspire people to follow God.
1 Timothy 4:12 NKJV
12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
4. Where is this strength to come from?
Philippians 4:13 NKJV
13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
5. How are we strengthened by the Lord?
Romans 4:19–20 NKJV
19 And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. 20 He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,
Rom

B. , We need the whole Armor of God in order to stand.

1. In order to be able to stand against the devil, the whole Armor is needed.
Ephesians 6:11 NKJV
11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Ephesians 6:13 NKJV
13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
,
2. Jesus used the Armor of God to cause Satan to flee.
Matthew 4:4 NKJV
4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”
Matthew 4:7 NKJV
7 Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ”
Matthew 4:10 NKJV
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
3. The devil tempted Jesus in every way that he could.
1 John 2:15–16 NKJV
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.
4. As Christians, Christ is our Armor because apart from Him, we can do nothing.
John 15:5 NKJV
5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
5. In order to have the Armor of Christ, you must be in Christ.
Galatians 3:27 NKJV
27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Romans 6:3 NKJV
3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?
Rom 6.
6. The way we keep the Armor on is by remaining faithful.
James 1:12 NKJV
12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

C. We need to realize that the Armor does not protect us from flesh and blood.

1. God’s intent with the Armor is not to stop mankind’s physical suffering.
2 Timothy 3:12 NKJV
12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
2. The armor is to provide spiritual protection from the spiritual war.
Romans 8:35–39 NKJV
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” 37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
3. Jesus’ kingdom is not of this world.
John 18:36 NKJV
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”
4. God did not even provide His Son armor to protect Him from flesh and blood cruelties but delivered Him up to the Jews to be crucified.
Romans 8:31–32 NKJV
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?
5. Without human suffering, there could be no free will.

D. We need to do all that we can to stand.

1. This is where we start the lesson today.

BODY:

1. WE NEED TO DO ALL THAT WE CAN TO STAND.

A. We have talked about...

1. Being strong in the Lord and what it means to be strong.

Ephesians 6:10 NKJV
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

2. Needing the whole armor of God and how to put it on.

3. What the armor protects us from and what it does not.

Ephesians 6:12 NKJV
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Ehp

B. We have prepared ourselves to fight.

1 Timothy 6:12 NKJV
12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

1. We have made ourselves ready to give a defense.

1 Peter 3:15 NKJV
15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;

2. We have armed ourselves with an armor that we can be confident will not fail.

Ephesians 3:8–13 NKJV
8 To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ; 10 to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places, 11 according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him. 13 Therefore I ask that you do not lose heart at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.
Eph 6.8-
Ephesians 6:8–13 NKJV
8 knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free. 9 And you, masters, do the same things to them, giving up threatening, knowing that your own Master also is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.

3. We have armed ourselves with a sword that is able to divide soul from spirit or bone from marrow.

Hebrews 4:12 NKJV
12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

C. The enemy is at the gate and he is ready to fight.

1 Peter 5:8 NKJV
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

1. Satan has an army and they are ready to fight.

John 8:44 NKJV
44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

A. Who is a part of Satan’s army?

1. Anyone who is not with Jesus.
Luke 11:23 NKJV
23 He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters.
2. Anyone who fights against the truth.
John 8.45-
John 8:45–47 NKJV
45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.”
Galatians 4:16 NKJV
16 Have I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth?
3. Anyone who sins willfully, knowing it is wrong and does not care.
Hebrews 10:26 NKJV
26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
Hebrews 10:26–31 NKJV
26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. And again, “The Lord will judge His people.” 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Heb 10.26-

D. You have made yourselves ready; don’t back down.

1. In Judges chapter 7, the Israelites were about to do do battle with the Midianites, and God told Gideon to tell whoever was fearful to go home.

Judges
Judges 7:3 NKJV
3 Now therefore, proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and afraid, let him turn and depart at once from Mount Gilead.’ ” And twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained.

2. Then Gideon was instructed to tell them to drink from a river, and 9,700 went home because they were not prepared.

Judges 7.5-
Judges 7:5–6 NKJV
5 So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps from the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set apart by himself; likewise everyone who gets down on his knees to drink.” 6 And the number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people got down on their knees to drink water.

A. God wants those who are prepared to fight for Him.

Colossians 4:6 NKJV
6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
Ephesians 4:10–16 NKJV
10 He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.) 11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.
Eph 4.

3. In is the story of David and Goliath, and the entire Israelite army was encamped against the Philistine army.

1 Samuel 17:2 NKJV
2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and they encamped in the Valley of Elah, and drew up in battle array against the Philistines.
1 Sam

A. Goliath said “I defy the armies of Israel,” but no one was willing to stand against this man.

1 Samuel 17:10–11 NKJV
10 And the Philistine said, “I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.” 11 When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
1 Sam. 17.

B. For forty days, this went on—Goliath making fun of Israel, but no one would stand against him because they were afraid.

1 Samuel 17:16 NKJV
16 And the Philistine drew near and presented himself forty days, morning and evening.
1 Sam 17.

C. David was a shepherd and the youngest of Jesse’s sons who was not allowed to go to war with Saul.

1 Samuel 17:12–15 NKJV
12 Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah, whose name was Jesse, and who had eight sons. And the man was old, advanced in years, in the days of Saul. 13 The three oldest sons of Jesse had gone to follow Saul to the battle. The names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah. 14 David was the youngest. And the three oldest followed Saul. 15 But David occasionally went and returned from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.
1 Sam 17:
1. David was sent with food for his brothers and the captains.
1 Samuel 17:16–18 NKJV
16 And the Philistine drew near and presented himself forty days, morning and evening. 17 Then Jesse said to his son David, “Take now for your brothers an ephah of this dried grain and these ten loaves, and run to your brothers at the camp. 18 And carry these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand, and see how your brothers fare, and bring back news of them.”
1 Sam 17.16-
2. When David arrived and was talking with the soldiers, this Goliath mocked the children of Israel again and all of the men of Israel fled in fear.
1 Samuel 17:23–24 NKJV
23 Then as he talked with them, there was the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, coming up from the armies of the Philistines; and he spoke according to the same words. So David heard them. 24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were dreadfully afraid.
3. David was astonished that no one was willing to fight this uncircumcised Philistine.
1 Samuel 17:26 NKJV
26 Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
4. Eliab, David’s oldest brother, was so afraid of Goliath that he would get upset with David.
1 Samuel 17:28 NKJV
28 Now Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger was aroused against David, and he said, “Why did you come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the insolence of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.”
1 Sam 17.
5. Saul would call for David and David would tell Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”
1 Sam 17.
1 Samuel 17:32 NKJV
32 Then David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”
6. Saul would tell David, ‘You are too young.’
1 Samuel 17:33 NKJV
33 And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.”
7. David would answer Saul, ‘I have fought bears and lions, and God will deliver me from this Philistine the same as He did from the bear and the lion.’
1 Samuel 17:34–37 NKJV
34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, 35 I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.” 37 Moreover David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”
1 Sam 17.34-
8. Saul would put heavy armor on David.
1 Sam 17.
1 Samuel 17:38 NKJV
38 So Saul clothed David with his armor, and he put a bronze helmet on his head; he also clothed him with a coat of mail.
9. David would say, ‘I have not tested this armor and I cannot wear it.’
1 Samuel 17:39 NKJV
39 David fastened his sword to his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. And David said to Saul, “I cannot walk with these, for I have not tested them.” So David took them off.
10. David would go into battle with his sling and five stones, and Goliath would mock him.
1 Samuel 17:40–44 NKJV
40 Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine. 41 So the Philistine came, and began drawing near to David, and the man who bore the shield went before him. 42 And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him; for he was only a youth, ruddy and good-looking. 43 So the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 And the Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!”
1 Sam 17.40-
11. David’s reply to Goliath was, ‘You come at me with physical armor and weapons, but I come at you with the impenetrable armor of the Lord.’
1 Sam 17.45-
1 Samuel 17:45–46 NKJV
45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
12. David then followed through with his promise to Goliath and struck him down.
1 Samuel 17:47–51 NKJV
47 Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.” 48 So it was, when the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, that David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. 49 Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. 50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David. 51 Therefore David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.
1 Sam 17.47-

CONCLUSION:

1. We have prepared ourselves to fight.

A. Will you stand your ground and fight?

1. The Israelites prepared themselves for battle but then did not have the courage to fight.

2. David had to show the soldiers of Isreal what it meant to have courage and stand with the Armor of the Lord fully donned.

3. Goliath would make fun of David, just as the world will mock Christians for standing for God and worshiping exactly the way God has said to worship.

A. Some will say that is not necessary to keep God’s Word so strictly.

B. Some will claim to be Christian and then get angry when you stand for God, just as David’s brother got angry.

C. Some will offer a false security in physical armor, as Saul did, but David had confidence in the Lord’s Armor.

B. Will you be the strong knight of God, don His armor, trust it, and do all you can to stand?

Ephesians 6:11 NKJV
11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
