Introduction

(Slide) We are to be excellent in all that we do, and do all things in the name of the Lord, and for the glory of the Lord. Our 2017 theme: Be . . . we can add be excellent to it. Now just a little information before delving into the passage for today. (Slide) In we see Darius the Mede received the kingdom. No record of him fighting for it, just receiving it. So let’s see what happens in the kingdom he received.
Daniel 5:31 NASB95
So Darius the Mede received the kingdom at about the age of sixty-two.
I. (Slide) Be Excellent in Trust () -
(Slide) A wise leader surrounds himself with wise people.
(Slide) For Darius it was 120 Satraps, 3 commissioners, and one with an extraordinary spirit
(Slide) Daniel distinguished himself and that caused jealousy (vv. .3-4)
(Slide) Daniel was known to be excellent in his work - the commissioners and the satraps could not find anything to accuse him of. - May we be excellent in trust also in such a way that there is nothing that anyone can accuse you of except being a Christian and may there be lot’s of evidence to prove that.
(Slide) Be a Daniel Be excellent in trust, in integrity and testimony- better to have your integrity intact than to compromise it. Remember but the Lord first (Slide)
Matthew 6:33 NASB95
“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
II. (Slide) Be Ready for accusations () - Be Committed to your faith - Daniel was committed so that the only way, only thing to accuse him of is regarding His God. - May we be the same way, that if you are going to be accused of something may it be that you are a Christian.
D
A.(Slide) The Kings response
(Slide) Build up his ego (vv.6-9) -who doesn’t like their ego built up, and what they were telling him was true (in part) - He was considered a god, but not the Satraps and Commissioners were there (Daniel was missing)
(Slide) The king was played (v.9) -they wanted Daniel out of the way so they used the king to do it. He was played, he was used.
B. (Slide) Daniels Response
(Slide) Daniel was not ignorant of what was going on (v.10)
(Slide) Daniel was committed to God and his prayer life (v.11) - to us may we be committed to our God and our walk with Christ that we do not waver or compromise.
C. (Slide) Royal Statute (some information)
(Slide) When established it could not be changed.
(Slide) Remember that the king was considered “a god” and a god cannot be wrong
D. (Slide) Daniel - Be excellent in prayer
(Slide) Daniel believed the prayer of Solomon (1Kngs8) that God will deliver in His promises
(Slide) Daniel prayed toward Jerusalem where his heart is and was told to lift his hands that way (again see 1Kngs8)
(Slide) Daniel prayed for the people knowing they will be delivered as revealed by Jeremiah (see Dan9:1ff) - may our prayer life be one of belief; one of lifting our heart, voice towards heaven and for the people around us.
Remember Daniel and his uncompromising faith- this is a great example. He could have compromised but He feared God more than man. - a N.T. example is (Slide)
Acts 5:29 NASB95
But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.
(Slide) P.T. Forsythe says “Toward Jerusalem or Babylon.” Most of the work begins the day looking toward the world and hoping to get something from it, but the Christian believer looks to the Lord and His promises and enters each new day by faith. - OUTLOOK DETERMINES OUTCOME
(Slide) D.L. Moody says “. . . true faith is man’s weakness leaning on God’s strength.” (Slide)
2 Corinthians 12:9 NASB95
And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.
III. Be confident of God’s power vs. Man’s authority ()
A. (Slide) Daniel had confident faith - resolved faith
(Slide) God gave him wisdom to interpret a dream (Dan2)
(Slide) God delivered his friends from fiery furnace (Dan3)
(Slide) Daniel knew the words of Jeremiah ()
Jeremiah 32:27 NASB95
“Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh; is anything too difficult for Me?”
B. (Slide) Daniel was accused (vv.11-13)
(Slide) They spied on him knowing they would find him praying
(Slide) They ran to the king
(Slide) We may come across people who are swift to shed blood as it says in Rom3:15 so don’t be surprised (Slide)
2 Timothy 3:12 NASB95
Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.
(Slide) Puritan preacher Henry Smith said, “God examines with trials, the devil with temptations and the world with persecutions.”
C. (Slide) The Kings Distress (vv.14-18)
(Slide) Distressed over a death warrant for Daniel - Remember God allowed this to happen so that the liars, the accusers would be found out and judged. - “God works “all things after the counsel of his own will” Eph1:11
(Slide) Distressed that there was no way out - (vv. 15-16) - look at the faith the king had in Daniel and the God of Daniel
(Slide) Distressed that the sentence had to be carried out (v.17) signed, sealed now delivered to the lions den
(slide) Don’t worry God had a plan and there is nothing that can stop God’s plan - God sent protection (v.22) but before that was a fitful night for the king.
(slide) “His sleep fled from him. No wonder! While the righteous lay amid hungry lions the ungoldy were rejoicing. And how do we sleep these days? Does unrighteousness keep us awake?” - Jim McGuiggan
D. (Slide) Victory! May God get the glory (vv.19-23)
(Slide) The kings cry
(Slide) The kings hope
(Slide) The kings proof
(Slide) Daniel’s resolve - Daniel trusted God - The Lord delivered Daniel because of his faith.
IV. (Slide) Be Excellent in Dedication (Dan6:25-28) A night of confinement ended in a morning of victory! A morning of glory to God.
A. (Slide) Excellent outcome? - this goes right with )
Proverbs 11:8 NASB95
The righteous is delivered from trouble, But the wicked takes his place.
B.
B. (slide) Excellent declaration (vv.25-27) - The first decree declared Darius a god; the second one declare that the God of the Hebrews was the true and living God.
C. (slide) Excellent Theology - like Moses, David or Paul this declaration shows God (Jehovah) to be the living and eternal God whose kingdom will never end or be destroyed
D. (slide) God’s servant prospered (v.28) -In the eyes of God and man, the man of God finds favor - Daniel found favor and was prospered
(slide) In Conclusion -the message for the people of God needs to be when facing the fiery furnace (1Pt1:6-8, 4:12-19) or the roaring lion (1Pt5:8-10) We need to be resolved, casting all our cars upon Him (1Pt5:7) since He cares for us.
