A Somber Discussion
As they walked along they talked about everything that had happened
This discussion would have been a somber one
They would have the horror of the Roman crucifixion in mind
The flogging
The nails
The spear
The mocking, spitting, and the beating
Everything that had been done to Jesus would have been the topic of conversation
But they would have had another horror in mind as well, not about what had been done to Jesus, but about what Jesus did and didn’t do
He didn’t fight back
No epic display of power that the Messiah certainly would have used they thought to overthrow the Roman government
No power displayed to even save Himself
He simply surrendered and submitted Himself
In light of all of this they fled… they were walking away from Jerusalem and away from everything that had happened
Transition: And I want everyone to look at how this is worded in , especially at the beginning of the verse:
They Just Missed It
That same day!
Same day as what?
Same day that Jesus had risen!
The same day that His other disciples were awestruck by the empty tomb!
On Friday night we had somber conversation
Deep reflection
We pondered the weight of our sin
We tried to keep watch
We reflected on the personal nature of the crucifixion as we considered our hands to be as guilty as Pilot’s
We listened to the mocking voices
We watched scenes from the crucifixion
We mourned His death
What are we Missing?
This morning I wonder what we might be missing...
You see as they walked along on the road to Emmaus they were so disappointed in how everything turned out
Jesus had disappointed them
And in one final ironic moment they were having a very honest discussion with Jesus about their disappointment without knowing it was Jesus
Jesus had disappointed them, but not because Jesus is disappointing
But their expectations of Jesus, their beliefs about Jesus, their hopes and dreams about Jesus were mis-aligned
They were mis-informed and in their disappointment...
They Had Demoted Him
He was a prophet...
Luke 24:
We had hoped He was the Messiah...
Now if Jesus had just aligned Himself with their expectations there wouldn’t be all of this confusion and disappointment
If He hadn’t performed all of those miracles
If He had only been just a really effective teacher
Not as much confusion
Or if
I’m going to suggest that there would be less confusion had Jesus not come back to life
Have you ever heard anyone have as much trouble coming to terms with the life and teachings of Socrates?
Plato?
Confucius?
No! Why?
Because they’re all dead.
Dead and stayed dead.
Jesus foretold His death and resurrection numerous times and then had the Holy audacity to follow through with His plan and fulfill His mission
So use your imagination for a moment and listen as they talked and listened to Jesus:
Can’t you almost hear them saying, “Wait, He was serious when He said that?”
“So the body wasn’t stolen?”
“He’s alive?”
He is alive and He isn’t just a prophet or a great teacher, but He is LORD!
He is Lord
This morning we celebrate Jesus as being Lord!
He is in fact the alpha and omega!
He is the beginning and the end!
