8 Tips for Cutting it Straight

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
“Rightly dividing the Biblical text is what undergirds rightly preaching the Biblical text.” – Steven J. Lawson
“Be masters of your Bibles, brethren. Whatever other works you have not searched, then search them, but be at home with the writings of the Prophets and Apostles.” – Charles Spurgeon

Consider the Context

What has been the Biblical author’s intent? Who was it written to? Why was it written? What said before the text, what was said after?

Identify the Literary Genre

Narrative, history, poetry, biographical, epistle (letter), wisdom, apocalyptic....

Examine Original Languages

Discern Figures of Speech

Look for words such as “like” or “as.” Parables are an example of figures of speech: “The kingdom of God is like...”

Research the History

Study the government, the social background, the political climate and so forth. Where is the Biblical text located within redemptive history? Before or after Christ?

Survey Geography

Where did this take place? Where was Corinth? Where was Judah located? Is there any key information about the environment, agriculture? Is there anything helpful about the names of places?

Study the Culture

Before you travel to another country you attempt to learn about the culture. The same holds true for biblical interpretation. Study and research the culture of where something took place, it might be beneficial to your interpretation.

Document the Theology

We interpret one verse through the lens of the entire canon of Scripture. If you believe the text you are studying presents a doctrine then it will be found throughout Scripture, not just in one place.
