Introduction

The players: Tax Collectors; Sinners, Pharisee’s and Scribes

In this section they, Tax collectors, sinners,

Eventhough they don’t know what they were murmuring about there was some wise truths in what they said.

(Slide) - True statement, if he had saved Himself he could not save us
Matthew 27:42 NASB95
“He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him.
(Slide) Though Caiaphas wanted to stop an uprising by killing one, by One all could be saved.
John 18:14 NASB95
Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was expedient for one man to die on behalf of the people.
- He receives and eats with them
Luke 15:2 NASB95
Both the Pharisees and the scribes began to grumble, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.”
(Siide) The Lost, the sinner, the reason, the story, one story, three parts (turn to Story book pgs. 100-101 and Bible to
(Slide) The Lost - Sheep (vv.3-7) - Lost because of foolishness
(Slide) One thing to notice, Jesus tells them it is “a parable” - does not say three
(Slide) What do you learn in (v.4)? What is Jesus saying and saying to who? -Many may be lost because they wander and just don’t know any better, or they wander because they think there maybe something better for them.
(Slide) God’s love searches for the wandering sheep, the foolish, to bring them to the fold or back to the fold.
There is great joy when a sinner repents, in heaven and here too isn’t there?
The Lost - Coin (vv.8-10) Lost because of carelessness
Carelessness by wrong friends, wrong influence, wrong places, wrong choices
Jewish custom for a woman when she married would begin to wear a headband of ten silver coins to signify she is married (it is the equivalent to our wedding bands today) If she lost one of the coins, she would do anything to try and find it.
(Slide) What steps did the woman take to find the coin?
(Slide) Think about what steps we take to come to go from lost to found
So in part one and two the lost are out of place, she sheep should be with the shepherd, the coin should be the chain, and the lost sinner should be in fellowship with God.
(Slide) The Lost - Son (vv.11-32) Lost because of choice
The difference in this section than the previous two is the Father does not go looking for the son, the son remembers the love of the father and returns to the father.
(Slide) The rebellion (vv.11-16)
(Slide) Things became priority over people
(Slide) Pleasure over duty
(Slide) Distant (far off country) over safety at home
(Slide) The repentance (vv. 17-19)
(Slide) He came to himself -
(Slide) He knew, came to his senses in what he had at home
(Slide) He humbled himself
(Slide) The Return (vv.20-24)
(Slide) What was the Father doing?
(Slide) What did the Father do when saw the son?
(Slide) God, the angels, the church all rejoice when a sinner repents or returns
One must understand his lostness to realize the salvation that is offered, we don’t have to get right, we just need to get real, we are lost without Christ.
We need to realize our lostness to know of the repentance needed. We don’t have to have everything right to get right with God, we need God to get everything right.
(Slide) The brother (vv.25-32)
(Slide) The tragic story here, the one who does not think he is lost, is lost, why?
(Slide) Do you remember who Jesus is speaking to, or who is in the crowd?
(Slide) The older brother is a picture of the Pharisee’s and the Scribes who did not even know they were lost. ,
What are the two greatest commands? (hint look at )
Love the Lord your God
Love your neighbor as yourself
(Slide) What was the brother missing?
(Slide) sins of the brother are self-righteousness
(Slide) Pride
(Slide) Unconcern for his brother
(Slide) Unrighteous anger
(Slide) Closing
We have seen a “man” with lost sheep
A “woman” with a lost coin
A “son” who chose to be lost
A “son” that did not even realize he was lost
