Well over three hundred verses are concerned with the subject of Jesus' resurrection in the New Testament. We are told that this event is a sign for unbelievers (); cf. ) as well as the answer for the believer's doubt (). It serves as the guarantee that Jesus' teachings are true (; Corrinthians 15:12-20) and is the center of the gospel itself (, ; Corrinthians 15:1-4). Further, the resurrection is the impetus for evangelism (; ), the key indication of the believer's daily power to live the Christian life (, ; ) and the reason for the total commitment of our lives (; ). The resurrection even addresses the fear of death (; ; cf. ) and is related to the second coming of Jesus (; ). Lastly, this event is a model of the Christian's resurrection from the dead (; ; ) and provides a foretaste of heaven for the believer (; ). For a popular treatment that addresses these and other aspects, see Gary R. Habermas, The Centrality of the Resurrection.

Introduction

The resurrection of our Savior is without question the most significant event in human history.
Either He rose from the dead and therefore he is God as he claimed to be, or he did not and Christ is an imposter and the Christian faith is but a great hoax.
Paul said it this way in
1 Corinthians 15:12–19 KJV 1900
Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
1 Co 15

If No Resurrection:

Our Preaching is vain - What do we have to preach but the resurrection!
Gary R. Habermas & J.P. Moreland, Immortality - The Other Side of Death, Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1992, p. 245.
Our Faith is vain- What do we have to believe but the resurrection!
We are in our sins - “ye are yet in your sins”
Those that have died believing in Christ are perished (no hope) - “they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished”
We are miserable living our present lives for a purpose that has no founding! “we are of all men most miserable”
1 Corinthians 15:20 KJV 1900
But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
Declaration: Christ is risen from the dead!
Preposition: Have you truly considered the significance of such a wonderful truth!

Transition: I want us to notice 4 important consequences of the Resurrection of Christ

I. The Conquest of the Resurrection

“in Christ shall all be made alive”
1 Corinthians 15:22 KJV 1900
For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
1 Co 15:

A. The reality of death

“as in Adam all die”
This world has answers to many problems, but they have no answer to the problem of death!
There is no other way to be made alive, but in Christ!
This world has answers to many problems, but they have no answer to the problem of death!
Illustration: I just read of the passing of a woman in Italy who was believed to be the oldest woman on earth 117 years old.
The world's oldest person and the last known to have been born in the 1800s died Saturday.
Emma Morano, 117, of Italy died Saturday afternoon, AFP and the Associated Press reported. Dr. Carlo Bava told the AP that she died while sitting in a rocking chair in her home, located in the Northern Italy town of Verbania.
She ate a raw egg every day and credited her longevity to her diet, she told Italian newspaper La Stampa.
"For breakfast I eat biscuits with milk or water," she said. "Then during the day I eat two eggs — one raw and one cooked — just like the doctor recommended when I was 20 years old. For lunch I'll eat pasta and minced meat then for dinner, I'll have just a glass of milk."
Sleep also was important. She went to bed before 7 p.m. and arose before 6 a.m.

B. The remedy of Christ

“so in Christ shall all be made alive”
There is no other way to be made alive, but in Christ!
2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV 1900
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
It is because of the resurrection that we can be converted (changed!)

II. The Comfort of the Resurrection

“be not afraid”
Matthew 28:10 KJV 1900
Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.
Matthew 2810
Why did fear grip Jesus’ followers? Was it because it seemed like hope was lost? - things are not always as they seem!
Fear is the opposite of belief -
Was it because it seemed like hope was lost? - things are not always as they seem!
Illustration: President and Mrs. Benjamin Harrison were so intimidated by the newfangled electricity installed in the White House they didn't dare touch the switches. If there were no servants around to turn off the lights when the Harrison’s went to bed, they slept with them on.
Most of the time what we fear never comes to pass!
How many times as Christians do we find ourselves fearful and unbelieving. The resurrection reminds us of God’s power over death and the grave and it reminds us of his desire to comfort us in our hour of need.

III. The Commission of the Resurrection

“go…teach…baptize”
Matthew 28:18–20 KJV 1900
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Matthew 28:18

A. A Commission of Movement

“go ye therefore”
Christ is given all power (risen from the dead)- he promised to be with us - what is stopping us from going?
Illustration: A one-legged school teacher from Scotland came to J. Hudson Taylor to offer himself for service in China. "With only one leg, why do you think of going as a missionary?" Asked Taylor.
"I do not see those with two legs going," replied George Scott. He was accepted.
Pillar of Fire, January First, 1983.
Why are we not going? to our neighbors, to our friends, to our family....why?

B. A Commission of Magnitude

B. A Commission of Magnitude
“all nations”
You might not be able to go across the ocean but you can be part of a work right here! Glendale Arizona is part of all nations!

C. A Commission of Meaning

“teach…baptize…observe”
The church has a commission to teach- but you cannot teach if you haven't been taught and you cant be taught if you are not present when the teaching is taking place!
1 Peter 2:2 KJV 1900
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

IV. The Courage in the Resurrection

“hear these words”
Acts 2:22–24 KJV 1900
Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.
Acts 2:

A. Their Timid Past

As Jesus was arrested we see the beginning of their fear as the disciples fled
Matthew 26:56 KJV 1900
But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.
Mat 26:
Peter denies the Lord three times
Matthew 26:69–70 KJV 1900
Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee. But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest.
Matthew 26:69 KJV 1900
Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee.

B. Their Triumphant Progress

Peter is bold on the day of Pentecost!
Acts
Paul in Thessalonica - “these that have turned the world upside down”
What happened to change these disciples from being full of fear to being full of faith? It was the resurrection!

Conclusion:

We must not lose sight of the significance of the resurrection.
It is the most significant event in history
The gospel message is centered in its truth

The Resurrection reminds us:

Conquest - the power to be saved - the victory over the grave!
Comfort - when we are troubled and confused!
Commission - when we lose our focus !
Courage - when we lose heart!
Where are you this morning? Have you been converted? There is no other empty tomb! Do you need Comfort? He lives! Have you lost focus? He said therefore Go! Have you lost heart? Remember the change in the disciples, all of which gave their lives!
