Note: There are some false believers who remain in the church, or when they do drift out of the church, do not willfully oppose the things of God. The reason for this is that while they are not genuine believers, they actually think they are saved. One who has the spirit of antichrist denies the faith he was once said to possess.
Illustration: The story has been told of a church in a communist country where Christianity is illegal. During a service, the door are knocked open and several soldiers with guns enter. One soldier declares that the people has 60 seconds to leave without reprisal, but those Christians that remain will be taken to jail. A mass exodus quickly hits the doors. At the end of time, there are a handful of believers left. The soldiers then put down their guns and tell the believers, “we want to hear about Jesus, but we want to hear about him from real believers.”

He informs them of a theological truth in passing: they (as we also) are living in the last hour. This is understood as the indeterminate length of time between the two Advents of Christ. The ultimate last hour will be at the time of the end when the final Anti-christ rises to oppose Christ, but the times between are also so designated. This is due to the arrival of those who oppose Christ in the present and actively work against His kingdom.
John also gives them (and us) a manner of understanding their departure. They left because they never truly believed. This is an important truth, even though the argument appears to be circular. The alternative is to deny the doctrine of Eternal Security. (cf )
Application: Recognize the departure of Apostates was foretold
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.
I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them.

Understand that their departure was for the purpose of revealing their true nature to us and to the world. Don’t let apostates upset your faith!

Explanation: John continues to pour truth into his fellow believers, and to encourage them to abide in the goodness of Christ. This is not a scare tactic as it to say, “if you don’t stay in Christ, then you will end up like the others.”
No, this is a reassurance that they will remain in Christ, but for them not to be overly dismayed by the departure of the Apostates. He stresses that the false believers are trying to deceive the genuine believers, and he is safeguarding the genuine believers. Fore warned is fore armed.
Argument: John knows those who have eternal life will abide in God. John also knows that Jesus will return for His bride one day, and he wants those he considers his spiritual children to be pure and ready for the Bride Groom’s return.
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. For,
“Yet a little while,
and the coming one will come and will not delay;
but my righteous one shall live by faith,
and if he shrinks back,
my soul has no pleasure in him.”
