Jesus tells the pharisees about the sign of Jonah and at least Nineveh repented
Calls the generation of pharisees an evil generation
So He has made people a little mad at this point in the story...
To top it all off, Jesus tells the scribes and pharisees they have missed the point.
John 5:39 ESV

Jesus is the Testimony of Scripture

All of scripture is pointing to Jesus
To this day, if you do sadder dinners with Jewish friends it is astounding that they've missed the messiah
As Jesus met some men on the road after he rose again, Jesus himself says that its about him
Luke 24:27 ESV
And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
Matthew 21:1–5 ESV
1 Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, 5 “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”
To get you into the scene: Jesus has already predicted his death, so he is walking into what he knows is his demise
I love that Jesus knew that there would be animals in places he hasn't been just yet, it is showing his sovereignty in bringing this all to pass
He was showing that his life was being laid down, it wasn't being taken from him.
The same power that destroyed sodom and Gomorra dwelled with Jesus, but he laid his life down for us.
The same way that I could tell someone to go grab me a sandwich, I bought that stuff and put it there!
Here ( V3)Jesus claims that the Lord (Kyros) will need these animals, he is claiming divinity and proving his divinity through sovereignty
says that the King is coming one who would be the Davidic covenant who will bring righteousness and salvation
says that Jesus is the one who will come with righteousness and having salvation
Zechariah is writing this after David is dead and the Exile is over he is encouraging them to follow God because God will send this promised messiah
John 5:39 ESV
You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me,
is set in a context of judgment on the enemies of isreal. The King will appear and his Kingdom will streatch across the whole earth.
Luke 24:27 ESV
And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
The scarlet thread of this messiah can be traced throughout the whole of Scripture
All of scripture is pointing to Jesus
In We see that there will one day come a man, and that man would crush the head of a serpent
During the flood, there is an ark that saved men from the wrath of God, for us that person is Jesus
Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac. He carried his own wood up onto the mountain, Both Isaac and Jesus rode a donkey to their place of death, both Isaac and Jesus were obedient to their fathers to the point of death, They both rose again after facing down death. But what separates them? Jesus actually died…
God spared Isaac, but for your sake and for mine, God didn't spare his own Son.
In Exodus we see the story of the passover where the blood of a lamb would save those who’s doors are covered by it, Jesus was that passover lamb for us
In Leviticus we see the high priest making sacrifices for people, says that Jesus is the great high priest who lives to make intercession for us.
God defeating Goliath through David is a picture of how God will destroy the strongholds in your life through the grace that Jesus provides
All of the Judges who saved God’s people, they were pointing to what Jesus would ultimately do
God spared Isaac, but for your sake and for mine, God didn't spare his own Son.
The whole of the testimony of Scripture was pointing to the coming Messiah Jesus. Your life can point to the 2nd coming Messiah.
Is Jesus the testimony of our lives? Do our whole lives point to Jesus, the same way that the Law and the Prophets pointed to Jesus? Are we so filled with Gods grace that it overflows into the way we interact with people in our lives? If not, we have the opportunity to fix our eyes on the goodness of Christ and plead with the Spirit to transform us into His likeness.
A life that looks like Jesus points to Jesus, one way that this scripture will point us to is that Jesus was the perfect example of humility.

Jesus Exemplifies Humility

Matthew 21:6–7 ESV
6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them.
Matt 21
What do you think of when you think of a king?
Jesus is the King of all creation and he comes in riding on a donkey
Jesus is the only King that would wash the servants feet
is set in a context of judgment on the enemies of Israel. The King will appear and his Kingdom will stretch across the whole earth.
Many were following Jesus for their own gain, not for the coming of the true kingdom of Jesus that would be established in meekness
Jesus is the model of meekness, He was the only one with the right to exult himself, yet He didn't.
These people would have expected Jesus to ride in on a war horse like David and destroy the Romans, but he had so much more in mind that military rule
Another verse that captures the scope of Jesus humility is in Philippians
Philippians 2:5–11 ESV
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Philippians 2:5–9 ESV
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
is set in a context of judgment on the enemies of isreal. The King will appear and his Kingdom will streatch across the whole earth.
This is the paradox of the Kingdom of God, in order to become great, we must become less.
Jesus was in the same place as God, but didn't hold on to that.
We must loose our lives in order to find it
David Brooks “Road to Character”
He listened to an old broadcast of a radio show called command performance
This was broadcast on VJ Day (the day the Japanese surrendered)
Bing Crosby was hosting it live just hours after and he said “I guess at a moment like this, we don’t feel too proud, were just humbled.”
In the whole broadcast there was a tone of deep humility
Later someone else read a passage of a war correspondent that said “We didn't win this war because were better than anyone else, we just happened to be blessed with material abundance, and some good allies. We should just try to stay modest and be worthy of the peace”
Then David Brooks went inside after hearing this and turned on a football game
Wide receiver caught a 2 yard pass and had a massive victory dance
He saw a bigger self puffing victory dance after a 2 yard gain today than the men who won World War II
If there is anyone who has the right to boast it is the King of Glory, yet he made himself nothing, was obedient to the point of death, even the humiliating death on a cross, and we see him riding to this death on a donkey, not on a mighty war horse. Someone like that deserves praise. There is true strength in humility.

Our Praise Provokes Wonder

Matthew
Matthew 21:8–11 ESV
8 Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” 10 And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”
These people had heard of Jesus raising Laz from the dead and now they are following him praising him as the Davidic Messiah
They praised with passion, taking their cloaks and putting them on the ground, something that you would only do for a king
They only had part of the revelation of Jesus, and do you see what happened?
The City was stirred into wonder, asking about Jesus
How much more should our praise stir wonder in our city if weve been given the whole revelation of Jesus?
We know Christ is king of everything, these people thought he was only king of Jerusalem
We know that Jesus is sovereign and in control, these people thought he was only going to be a warrior
We know that Jesus is the Son of God and lives every day to make intercession for us, these people had no concept of a King who would constantly work on their behalf
Shouldn't our worship be more passionate than theirs?
Shift gears into understanding worship as a lifestyle
Worship isnt a building and singing
Worship is a lifestyle
We worship the things we love by sharing about them
Think of seeing a good movie, you want to share that with people
Worship isn't just corporate singing, but it is sharing our faith and letting others know about our great King
People in Verse 11 Are letting the city know who Jesus was, they were acting in worship by proclaiming the majesty of Christ
Matthew 21:11 ESV
11 And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”
Do you view evangelism as worship?
Do away with the awful notion of preach the gospel always and when nessessary use words
Is your worship resulting in telling others about Jesus and stirring up the city to want to know who he is?
Remember that all of this is done in humility
I think the reason this doesn't happen is because we forget that there is urgency, it is urgent that we herald the good news

Behold Your King is Coming

This is Urgent, The King is Coming

Why is it urgent to spread the Gospel as an act of worship?
Because Jesus came humbly riding on a donkey the first time. The second time he comes, it will be too late to switch your allegiance
11-
Revelation 19:11–16 ESV
11 Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. 13 He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. 14 And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. 15 From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.
I am not emotion mongering or trying to scare you into doing anything, this is the truth that scripture lays out for those who do not know Jesus.
Jesus makes it so easy to love him, why would you decide not to?
It is so satisfying to follow Christ, to be on the side of the King of kings and Lord of lords why wouldn't we want that for our neighbors?
For those of you who do not know Jesus as your savior, Jesus has still shown himself as the humble King who will pardon every wrong thing you've ever done, and is willing to put every right thing he has ever done into your account. You don’t need to work for his love, he has shown how much he loves you by dying on the cross, don’t let this opportunity pass, because there is no way to tell how much time is left before your decision is final.
Do invitation and response
If you love Jesus, don’t hesitate to love your neighbor and tell them about Jesus and how much he loves them, and how he can deliver them from every sin and all of the shame that they’ve ever felt. Help them understand how Jesus has given you a new beginning through his grace.
Tell them as one beggar who found bread, that the bread of life will never leave them empty or wanting and he longs to give generously of himself
Tell them of Jesus desire to give rest to the soul even to the weariest and most heavy burdened
Tell them that he loves to spend all of his time with sinful people because thats all that there are!
Tell them that Jesus wants to give them a new identity and wants to adopt them into his family
This is the season to invite people in word and deed
Find the invite card around the room, take as many as you want and pass them out
Benediction
Because all of Scripture pointed to Jesus, the whole of our lives should point to Jesus
Because Jesus exemplified humility, our lives should be marked by a generous giving of ourselves
Because Jesus provoked worship and it stirred the city, our worship should stir the city through our declaration of Christ as King
Because Jesus came in humility we can rest in his gentleness, but because Jesus is coming again in Judgment and power, we must urgently declare the wonders of his glorious grace.
Jesus is
Please take a card invite people into your life and proclaim the good news while we still have time
