Supposedly a disgruntled employee - trainer opened fire at his previous job after being “let go.”
Upscale shopping mall in Coral Gables FL
Shot ad wounded two before turning the gun on himself
How have we become a society where violence is the status quo when we are offended or someone wrongs us?
This is natural sinful man and this is what Jesus was dealing with with the disciples
Jesus continues to prepare His disciples for His departure
Problem: When Christians become to self centered and narrow focused

Drama

Disciples
Dazed and Confused
They had become too inwardly focused
They were sad - became consumed by tehir emotions and only focused on themselves
They took their eyes off of Jesus and considered it all over
They forgot about all of the Miracles they had seen him accomplish and the works He had done
Turns Water into Wine at teh Wedding at Cana
He Heals an Official’s Son
He heals an invalid at the pool
He fed the 5000 - plenty of leftovers
He walks on water
Stood up against the teachers - Saducees and Pharisees
Unless we forget, He raised Lazarus from the dead
They lost faith, became disheartened
This is the sinful side of man and the power that Satan has over us unless Jesus interveens
Jesus
Chided the disciples for their lack of faith and self centered focus
John 16:5 ESV
But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’
Wow, is me.
Jesus knows this is the resuly of sin and its effects on mankind
He knows because HIs whole purpose was to save man from this
He also knows this is how Satan works in this world
He himself was tempted by Satan
Turn stone in to bread
Worship me, someone other than God
Jump from the top of a temple and test God
Jesus was letting them know that someone else was coming in His place to be a Helper

παρά-κλητος, ον, called to ones aid, Lat. advocatus: as Subst. a legal assistant, advocate, Dem.

Doctrine

God has not abandoned us
John 16
John 16:4 ESV
But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.
A person of the trinity has been engaged with mankind since its creation
God the Father in the Garden and with Israel, Jesus in the NT, and the HS shortly after the ascension
God has never left man to fend for himself
Illus: Israel in the desert -grumbling about the lack of water
Numbers 20:10–13 ESV
Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels: shall we bring water for you out of this rock?” And Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice, and water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their livestock. And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe in me, to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.” These are the waters of Meribah, where the people of Israel quarreled with the Lord, and through them he showed himself holy.
Numbers 20:10-
Lack of faith - a feeling of abandonment
Jesus work was complete
The HS has a completely different role
The Sufficiency of Jesus death and resurrection

III. Christ, by his obedience and death, did fully discharge the debt of all those that are thus justified, and did make a proper, real, and full satisfaction to his Father’s justice in their behalf.

Jesus work was going to be completed and the next stage of God’s drama was going to be enacted
The work of the Holy Spirit
John 16:
John 16:8 ESV
And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
To Convict the sinner
John 16:9 ESV
concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;
To apply Christ’s righteousness to the believer - imputation
To conquer the ruler of the world - Satan
Calvin: that when Jesus Spirit in us strengthens us we overcome the ruler of this world
The HS gives us the ability to defeat Satan in our own lives
Sanctification
There was only so much the disciples could handle, they needed to grow in faith and knowledge
John 16:12 ESV
“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
Growth in Christ
The Holy Spirit continues this spiritual growth
John 16:13–14 ESV
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Doxology

Praise God for the completed work of Jesus
What Jesus accomplishes in His death burial and resurrection was complete
There is nothing to add - salvation is ours because of his work
Praise God for the work of the HS in our life
If we are made aware of our sin, then the HS is working faith in us.
He is building faith in us and making it possible for us to believe
He is convincing us of our sin
He has applied the righteousness of Christ to us - imputed

III. Christ, by his obedience and death, did fully discharge the debt of all those that are thus justified, and did make a proper, real, and full satisfaction to his Father’s justice in their behalf.

Defenition: Theology. to attribute (righteousness, guilt, etc.) to a person or persons vicariously; ascribe as derived from another.
Praise God for not abandoning us
He has not left you nor forsaken you
Satan often attacks us by getting us to look inward. Its easier today than ever before. We do the same thing as the world. We have become easily offended and so self centered that we cannot see what is right in front of us - the very Spirit of God, the creator of all things, the Helper
Satan has us doesn’t he? Some of us believe we have been abandoned by God.
He has not and will not.
Ezekiel 16:1–14 ESV
Again the word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, make known to Jerusalem her abominations, and say, Thus says the Lord God to Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth are of the land of the Canaanites; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite. And as for your birth, on the day you were born your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to cleanse you, nor rubbed with salt, nor wrapped in swaddling cloths. No eye pitied you, to do any of these things to you out of compassion for you, but you were cast out on the open field, for you were abhorred, on the day that you were born. “And when I passed by you and saw you wallowing in your blood, I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’ I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’ I made you flourish like a plant of the field. And you grew up and became tall and arrived at full adornment. Your breasts were formed, and your hair had grown; yet you were naked and bare. “When I passed by you again and saw you, behold, you were at the age for love, and I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness; I made my vow to you and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Lord God, and you became mine. Then I bathed you with water and washed off your blood from you and anointed you with oil. I clothed you also with embroidered cloth and shod you with fine leather. I wrapped you in fine linen and covered you with silk. And I adorned you with ornaments and put bracelets on your wrists and a chain on your neck. And I put a ring on your nose and earrings in your ears and a beautiful crown on your head. Thus you were adorned with gold and silver, and your clothing was of fine linen and silk and embroidered cloth. You ate fine flour and honey and oil. You grew exceedingly beautiful and advanced to royalty. And your renown went forth among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through the splendor that I had bestowed on you, declares the Lord God.
Ezek 16:1-
Let us turn outward from the sinful self and look to the one who is our Helper - the Holy Ghost, the very Spirit of God
