*Reenact the passage in a brief, but very dramatic way. Attempt to make the audience feel as though they are watching the scene happen for themselves. This is, after all, what John was attempting to do as he retold the the Passion story*
I. The Passion
A. John loved theater, or at the very least drama. His entire gospel is a dramatization of the Life of Christ.
Other material such as Revelation is very theatrical as well.
Why I like John’s gospel and his description of the trials, crucifixion and resurrection so much.
It feels like I’m on the front row seat watching the greatest story in history unravel before my very eyes.
B. The Passion story is very intense, much more so than in the other gospels.
i. The intimate conversation between Jesus and Pilate
ii. The shouts of the people, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
iii. “We have no king but Caesar” 2000+ years of God’s love and mercy thrown out the window!
iv. Jesus marched up the hill to Calvary
v. Jesus left to die.
II. The Pierce
A. Read
This passage is unique to John
B. This proved Jesus’ death was real.
B.
i. Gnostic teaching - If Jesus was God then he could not die.
ii. Still a common belief that Jesus did not really die - swoon, “appeared to die”
iii. God cannot die.
a. Common ancient belief (and even today).
b. 300 Illustration
c. John wants us to know that this God did die!
iv.
iv. Even if gods could die, they wouldn’t. Why would they?
a. John wants us to know that this God, the true God wanted to die because He loved us!
b. Our fake idols do not care for us. They do not know us. They do not feel, think, or understand like us. But Jesus did!
III. The Place
A. John saw this incident with his own eyes! (reread vs. 35)
DT: The same spear that proved Jesus was dead, proved Jesus was alive.
B.
They saw and touched the woulds on his hands and feet!
This wasn’t a ghost, this was really Jesus! Alive, and right in front of them!
IV. Conclusion
A. There is a God who loved us enough to die for me and you. His death was very real, and so was His resurrection.
B. Because He lives, we too can live! Death has been defeated, sin no longer stings. Hallelujah!
