Read v1-4

Now Jacob heard the words of Laban’s sons, saying, “Jacob has taken away all that was our father’s, and from what was our father’s he has acquired all this wealth.” 2 And Jacob saw the countenance of Laban, and indeed it was not favorable toward him as before. 3 Then the Lord said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your fathers and to your family, and I will be with you.”

4 So Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field, to his flock

title: Take the Truth and Run With It

Jacob was a very honest good man, a man of great devotion and integrity, yet he had more trouble and vexation than any of the patriarchs. He left his father’s house in a fright, went to his uncle’s in distress, very hard usage he met with there, and now is going back surrounded with fears. Here is, I. His resolution to return (v. 1–16). II. His clandestine departure, (v. 17–21). III. Laban’s pursuit of him in displeasure (v. 22–25). IV. The hot words that passed between them (v. 26–42). V. Their amicable agreement at last (v. 43, etc.).

In this passage we see Jacob leave Laban

he leaves with three reasons
Just action
bros and laban v1&2
divine direction
wives consent

we also see him make a covenant

has terms of kindness Laban v44/49
he wanted to do harm but the Lord forbade it
has terms of friendship Jacob v54-55

Note, When quarrels happen, we should be willing to be friends again upon any terms: peace and love are such valuable jewels that we can scarcely buy them too dearly. Better sit down losers than go on in strife.

What does this all mean to us?

Jacob was an alien living in a foreign land working for a foreign master
we are aliens living in a foreign land working as aliens...

Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, 12 having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation

resist old desires
For jacob this was deceit and he had met his match
what is it for us ? we are called out to live at a higher standard
jacob was facing persecution
jesus said that we would face persecution
blessed are you when falsely...

Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake.

john 15

Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you.

2 tim

Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

acts 14:22

strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, “We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.”

we must stand firm and overcome

“And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write,

‘These things says the First and the Last, who was dead, and came to life: 9 “I know your works, tribulation, and poverty (but you are rich); and I know the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 10 Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

11 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.” ’

we are to be in but not of this world...

john 17

15 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

we will come back to this section...

13 And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.” 15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; 16 having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. 17 For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

have an answer

Had I been accused before any other, I should have appealed to your Piety; as once the Apostle appealed unto Cæsar, and put an end to the designs of his enemies against him. But since they have had the boldness to lay their charge before you, to whom shall I appeal from you? to the Father of Him who says, ‘I am the Truth,’

how do we overcome and persevere

john 17

17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. 18 As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

1 john

I have written to you, young men,

Because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you,

And you have overcome the wicked one.

The Works of Philo On the Migration of Abraham

which is equivalent to saying, you have been a perfect wrestler for me, and you have been thought worthy of the prize and crown of victory, virtue having been the establisher of the contest and prospering to give prizes of victory
