I want to facilitate a reflection on being a healthy leader
Our culture has a preoccupation with (1) function and (2) competency. Most of the time we’re trying to answer the question: “Can they get the job done? Are they good at what they do? Give me a list of their accomplishments, achievements, merits, and so on...”
Most of the time, all of this will supersede a person’s (1) character, (2) integrity, and (3) soul health
I am convinced that for the Refuge Ministries to (1) grow in influence, (2) grow in size, (3) grow in excellence — our leadership and staff must be healthy.

I. Intro to the Retreat

A. What’s the plan?
1. Three Sessions
a. Healthy Leader (Now — 10-12, WES)
b. Enneagram Basic Overview (Today, 1-3, DOUG & WES)
c. Prayer and Reflection (Tomorrow, 9-10am)
B. What about the remainder of our time?
a. definition of retreat
an act of moving back or withdrawing
b. We are going to withdraw from our work. We are going to withdraw from the regular stuff. And we’re going to relax… We’re going to rest… We started this last night, but I just wanted to make sure we’re all on the same page.
c. That is the expectation. HAVE FUN. REST!

II. Jim Cofield and Rich Plass (Crosspoint Ministries)

A. Know Thyself
1.
Nearly all wisdom we possess, that is to say, true and sound wisdom, consists in two parts: the knowledge of God and of ourselves (Institutes, 1.1.1).
Nearly all wisdom we possess, that is to say, true and sound wisdom, consists in two parts: the knowledge of God and of ourselves (Institutes, 1.1.1).
2. In order to be healthy we need to know ourselves. I think out of a pious desire to appear humble, we have steered away from any consistent practice of knowing ourselves, because we thought the only important thing was for us to know God — “we don’t want to become prideful and self-focused, right?”
3. But as Calvin rightly says, “in order for us to know God well, we must know ourselves well...” — i.e. We must become self-aware, we must understand the depths of our fallenness as sinners, and understand the true meaning of grace.
4. To lead others, you must first lead yourself.
B. Video from Rich and Jim
1. Why video?
a. First, it’s good and they talk about this
b. Secondly, to introduce you to these men. They will be working with us for the next few years in helping us develop our residential ministry and how we are caring for the men in the Refuge.
