As we grow closer to Easter I want us to look at who Jesus is to us, as well as who He was to people who were in Jerusalem before His Crucifixion.
Easter is about the coming of the Messiah.
But who or what is the Messiah and what did it mean to Jerusalem and the Israelites, and what does it mean for us?
Israel had been established as God’s chosen people.
However their lack of trust in God and failure to worship only Yaweh led to a break in the covenant an their loos of freedom.
Prophets began to prophesy about the coming of a king, one whose kingdom would be established forever and be from God!
This king is the Messiah.
Israel had longed for this king to restore them to their place in world, they would once again be a great nation led by God.
They had been waiting on This Messiah for at least 700 years.
Lets put it into perspective in another way.. think about in perspective with Cubs baseball.
for 108 years fans had been waiting on a championship…
every time they got close people would get excited and think maybe this was the year.
all those loosing seasons, all those disappointments, but there was still hope.
Then Jesus comes on the scene and people begin to believe that maybe, just maybe this could be the one they had been waiting for… but they are not sure.
Even John the Baptist has his doubts, but he has hope.
It also seems like Jesus is starting to fulfil the prophecies about the Messiah.
The Messiah would proclaim the Good News to the poor, Jesus does that.
The Messiah would heal the sick.... Jesus does that....
The Messiah was supposed to be born of a Virgin and there are rumors that Jesus was born of a Virgin.
And Now, Now He is fulfilling Zachariah's that the Messiah will ride in on the colt of a donkey, one that had never been ridden.
Can you imagine? the hype that is surrounding this event?

Now some of these people may have been die hard cubs fans, but some of them simply got caught up in the hype.
That may have been what happened when Jesus was coming into jerusalem, think about some of these people who are yelling Hosanna in highest blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, are yelling crucify Him just a few days latter.
So what about us?
Around Easter we can get caught up in the hype...
