Introduction: God’s will is that you be saved, Spirit-filled, sexually pure, able to control your body, treat each other fairly, silence ignorance, boldly proclaim truth, and suffer for what is better.
These things are God’s will for your life.
You might be thinking, “Wait a minute!
These things are so obvious!
I thought you were going to help me figure out what job to pursue, who to marry, and where to live!” We’re going there today.
I do, however, want to point out that these things are a prerequisite to figuring out these questions.
Only when we have committed to live a life according to the truth we have been given can God bless us by directing our lives on a daily basis.
Again, if you have not been saved, you haven’t even taken the first step towards God’s will for you.
If you aren’t filled with the Word of God, you cannot expect that truth to help you make decisions.
If you aren’t sexually pure, you aren’t even following God’s will for your body, how can God direct what you should do with your life?
If you can’t control your body, how can your light shine before men and glorify God?
If you don’t treat others fairly, how can the foolish critics believe you when you share the gospel?
If you aren’t choosing to suffer for what is better you must then be characterized with the philosophy of the world and so the world leaves you alone.
Finding God’s Will For My Life
The Final Principle
F
If you are faithfully doing all of the things we have already studied, the final principle of God’s will for your life is this.
The last principle is: If you are seeking to delight in God and in the things of God, God will place in your heart the right desires.
Example: Journey to Brookside
If you are being faithful to fulfill what God has revealed in His Word as His will for you, then in order to determine His will for you life ask yourself this question: What do I want to do with my life?
Wait a minute, I want to know God’s will for my life!
Not my will for my life!
But wait!
Where do desires come from?
Desires come from an attempt to please whatever god you worship.
If you worship yourself, you will seek to please yourself.
If you worship money, you will do what it takes to earn money.
If you worship fame, you will do what you must in order to become famous.
If you worship at the altar of video games, you will organize your schedule so you can play video games.
If you worship God, you will first do what He commands (which is what we have studied).
Second, because He is a living God, He will place the right desires in your heart.
Example: Journey to Brookside
How
Be Moving
Once you have the right desires, go for it!
God is not going to use a couch potato.
Example: Missionary on food stamps
God likes to use people who are already moving.
After Paul had strengthened and encouraged the church in Galatia, he desired to go to Asia Minor.
God wanted Paul and Silas in Macedonia the whole time.
Paul was able to figure that out because he had a desire to do the will of God and kept at it until a door was open.
God used him because he was in motion.
Now the gospel would come to a brand new continent - Europe.
God will reveal His will for your life only when you are working towards what He has already called you to do in His Word.
Primarily, God’s will for your life is not a place to live, or a person to marry, or a job to work.
Primarily, His will for your life concerns who you are as a person.
If you are the right kind of person you can then do what God has placed in your heart to do and you will be fulfilling His will for your life.
