Sermon Outline:
Title: Forgive as you have been forgiven
Subject: How many times is Jesus saying we must forgive?
Complement: We must forgive continuously.
Exegetical Idea: Jesus teaches Peter that we must forgive continuously.
Homiletical Idea: Our sins against God are much bigger than the sins of people against us.
Purpose: As a result of preaching this sermon, I want my listeners to understand that the trials of life are necessary for their spiritual growth.
21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me?
Up to seven times?”
22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.
23 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.
24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him.
25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.
26 “At this the servant fell on his knees before him.
‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’
27 The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.
28 “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins.
He grabbed him and began to choke him.
‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.
29 “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’
30 “But he refused.
Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt.
31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened.
32 “Then the master called the servant in.
‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to.
33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’
34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.
35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”
-Forgiveness is pardoning.
Why forgive someone you believe deserves no forgiveness, but condemnation?

He didn’t want the person to be overcome with too much sorrow.
That person needed forgiveness and love.
Unforgiveness allows for Satan to plan against you.

If we don’t forgive we can’t experience God’s forgiveness and His fullness.

Literary Context:
-Peter felt that 7 times of forgiveness would be a lot of forgiveness.
-We are talking about forgiving our enemy, which would naturally deserve vengeance, grudge, anger, and punishment.
-Jesus before he died forgave those who crucified them.
-After forgiveness comes reconciliation.
-Job 33:39: Rabbis believe that people should only forgive no more than 3 times.
-Peter probably thinks highly of himself to say that we should forgive 7 times.
-The person that forgives, recognizes that the violator has no longer a debt to pay.
-In Luke Jesus says that they should forgive a person even if they sin against them 7 times a day.
Passage Explanation
-The king: God
-Slaves: Had responsibilities to the money their king had given them.
They were to administer their finances.
-One Slave ews them Ten Thousand Talents: Total revenue in Judea was 600; Galilee was 300: so the number was practically incomprehensible (LIKE THE NATIONAL DEBT).
This is the largest number in Greek to be expressed in words.
-The kind had the right to sell the man and his family to get some compensation.
The man asked forgiveness and said he could repay.
But the truth is that he would never be able to pay.
-Jesus was saying that your debt to God is too high for you to pay and that you need forgiveness.
-The Prodigal son’s story is similar because the Father forgave the child even before the child could finish his speech that was going to explain how he was going to pay back his son.
-The other Slave owed him 100 days worth of money (Dinerei).
The man was not able to forgive the guy that owed him a amount so small compared to the amount he was forgiven.
-We need to be like God, like the king.

The King sent his forgiven slave to be tormented because he had not forgiven his fellow friend.
The King handed him over to the tormenters.
-They needed to forgive from their hearts.
