Introduction:

1 Cor 1:18 tells us that the Preaching of the Cross is the power of God. That it is a declaration of the power of God. Doesn’t that seem counter intuitive?
Doesn’t it seem like a failure? Gal 6:14 we “glory” in the cross…how.
This passage begins describing for us, from John’s perspective, the crucifixion of our Lord. The text is naturally divided into three parts – that will make up our outline for this message.
Vs. 17-18 begin wit h the location and the crucifixion itself.
Vs. 19-22 shows us the soldiers collecting and casting lots for Jesus garments
Vs23-27 show Jesus’ care and dialoge with faithful disciples and friends.
The New American Commentary: John 12–21 4. The Crucifixion of the King (19:17–27)

This section of the Gospel breaks naturally into three parts. It begins with the scene on the way to skull hill and the crucifixion itself (19:17–18); then it deals with the kingly entitlement of Jesus on the cross (19:19–22); thereafter it contrasts the clothes-collecting, lot-casting soldiers with the faithful observant friends of Jesus around the cross (19:23–24).

By showing the itemized fulfillment of scripture.

Jesus is fulfilling the Old Testament.
God will vindicate His Servant. (Psalm 22, & Is 53)
Jesus is the Passover Lamb.
Why would John include these particular details about the crucifixion?
To point out that God’s purposes are being sovereignly accomplished.

2. The Cross Declares His Royal Identity

By showing Jesus’ true identity in Pilate’s inscription.

Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns;

The world also is firmly established,

It shall not be moved;

He shall judge the peoples righteously.”

3. The Cross Demonstrates His care for His Disciples.

By showing his individual care for his beloved.

4. The Cross Diagrams His Love for Sinners like you and me.

By showing how God placed our sins on Him.

How does John’s description of Jesus’ crucifixion help support his main theme of book (Jn 22:30-3
How do the details of soldiers casting lots for Jesus’ garments give credibility to his eyewitness account?
