Scripture Introduction
What would you think about a dog that would not bark, or a fish that refused to swim, or a bird that would not fly, or a lion that would not hunt.
You would have to conclude it was not living out what it was created to do becasue it was not living according to its purpose.
What is worse.
What if you walked upon a dog that went “meow” or a lion that went “roof, roof.”
You would have to conclude the anmial is deeply confused.
Not only is not doing what it was created to do it is doing something it was not designed to do.
It is confused.
I want us to see how an eternal perspective can change all that.
With this shift in thinking it will change your life.
You can become a lion that roars, a dog that barks, a bird that flies, a fish that swims; you can live out what the cross intended to produce.
(Review) Rabbi Paul has said that when you and I received Yeshua we were filled by Him, given a new identity in Him, and that we triumph with Him.
And he also said be careful about futile religion and its bogus offers.
You are a new creation now but (FCF) unfortunately we are not living out this newness and sometimes living opposite the new life.
A believer that does not have their thoughts reshaped by Messiah’s grace will be as wrong living as a lion acting like a fish or a dog acting like a snake.

Sermon Introduction
In my backyard, my wife and I planted three star jasmine vines.
When we put them in the ground two-and-a-half years ago the vines were 12 inches long.
We bought three arched trellises all 6 feet tall.
Five times taller than are little bitty baby vines.
We knew if we tended to those vines: watered them, pruned them, shaped their movements, connected them together, that they would fill out every millimeter of of those tall trellises.
Now, two-and-a-half years later are trellises are so full with star jasmine you can barely see rod iron at all.
Your mind is like a garden but instead of growing vines, flowers, fruits and vegetables it grows powerful idea vegetables, thought flowers, and abstract fruit.
Before we met the Messiah we were gardening our mind with poison ivy and not sweetheart english ivy, we were planting white snakeroot seeds instead of pomegranates seeds and the seed were sewing we were reaping: our thoughts were hostile to God and to death to us.
When we put our trust in Yeshua, He promised that all things are “made new!”
We are new creations, that includes the mind.
The mind plays the most vital role in rightly responding to God and experiencing His transformative presence.
The Scriptures never see the mind in a Greek analysis.
The mind is not primarily a repository for information; rather, it is the seat for the affections of the heart.
It is the driver of your emotions, will and behavior.
Jonathan Edwards classic book called “Religious Affections” nailed it when he said:
Gracious affections do arise from the mind’s being enlightened, richly and spiritually to understand or apprehend divine things.
Holy affections are not heat without light; but evermore arise from the information of the understanding, some spiritual instruction that the mind receives, some light or actual knowledge.
The child of God is graciously affected, because he sees and understands something more of divine things than he did before, more of God or Messiah, and of the glorious things exhibited in the gospel; he has some clearer and better view than he had before, when he was not affected: either he receives some understanding of divine things that is new to him; or has his former knowledge renewed after the view was decayed: 1 John 4:7, “Everyone that loveth, knoweth God.” Phil.
1:9, “I pray that your love may abound more and more in knowledge, and in all judgment.”
Rom.
10:2, “They have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.”
Col. 3:10, “The new man, which is renewed in knowledge.”
Psalm 43:3, 4, “O send out thy light and thy truth; let them lead me, let them bring me unto thy holy hill.”
John 6:45, “It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God.
Every man therefore that hath heard, and learned of the Father, cometh unto me.”
Knowledge is the key that first opens the hard heart, and enlarges the affections, and so opens the way for men into the kingdom of heaven; Luke 11:52, “Ye have taken away the key of knowledge.”
- Jonathan Edwards, A Treatise Concerning Religious Affections: In Three Parts ... (Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc., 1996), 108–109.
(FCF Restated) The problem we have to day is not that we are not planting God’s word in our mind.
It is that we choke out the little we plant of God’s word with other poisonous seed.
I think if you are today there is a good chance you are at least planting a seed in your mind about God’s word.
The problem is that the wee little seed that is trying to grow in your mind and maximize God’s reign in your life is being choked out by all the other seeds you are planting in your mind.
(Proposition) To the degree you apply your mind to the Messiah to that degree will you experience victory.
Your victory in life is tied to your mind.
Your sin does not start with what you do but what you thought about something first.
The mind needs to be a garden that is so seeded with God’s word that it can choke out any foreign, poison seeds.
Messiah minded people are the most earthly good.
Explain how the text supports your first main point.
I have heard it said “he is so heavenly minded he is no earthly good” but you are saying heavenly minded can be some earthly good?
No, I am saying that the only people of any earthly good are Messiah minded people.
Why are they?
Messiah minded people have the right point of reference.
Raised Up and Seated - Our point of reference is the Kingdom.
Lowered Down and on Earth - Our point of reference is not this world and it’s Kingdoms.
Messiah minded people have the right security.
Messiah minded people have the right “hook-up” -
Illustrate by Car Battery
Everybody who has a car knows that when you find your car battery dead in the H-E-B parking lot it is going to take the right kind of hook-up to get that battery to come back to life.
You are not going anywhere, your family is not going anywhere until you jumpstart your car.
You can try to jumpstart your car with potatoes to be eco-friendly but it will not run, you can try to jump start with a lawnmower but there is not enough power, you can try to jump start it with wind power but you will wait a long time.
There are lots of way you can try to jumpstart your car that will all ultimately fail but if you want to really succeed in getting your car started you need a living car to come along side of you.
You need the right hook-up.
You need to take out your jumper cables.
Attach the living positive to the dead positive, the living negative to the dead negative.
You need a transference of power from the right source so that you can get where you need to be going.
Apply: Without the right hook-up you will never get to a life of victory.
You have too many Hook-Ups
Our problem is that we are trying to hook-up to many things to start this dead thing and that is why you are only getting a temporary victory or none at all.
Negative: drinking, eating, drugs, etc.
Positive: reputation, money, job, influence, etc.
Seek first the kingdom and then all these things.
You need the one infallible hook-up not just good advise or amusement.
Illustrate: Keep your eye on the ball and do what the coach says.
Messiah minded people are earth’s greatest chance at experiencing God’s goodness in the land of the living because you are brought to life, and stay alive by being Hooked-up to him.
What you are putting into your mind, hooking your mind up to, changes who you are: your beliefs, thoughts, attitudes, behaviors.
Let the Messiah matter most to your mind and you will experience God’s kingdom in your life, real transformational victory.
Once you get the battery hooked up, and power is going from the live batter to your dead battery you got to do something.
Once you plant that vine in the ground, determine to have the Mind of the Messiah be your mind.
When you came to Messiah, you got the hooked-up so you could be Messiah mandated but now you got to turn on the ignition, water that seed, prune that garden.
So you first, have to know, the hook-up, has occured.
How do we turn the ignition on.
The Imperative turn-on the ignition of the mind.
Explain: How do we get the mind ignited so that our lives are going in the direction to experience God’s victory?
Notice what he says here, you are to keep seeking and set your mind on things above.
Many of you set your i-phone alarm clock to get up so you could get here to synagogue on time.
We know those who did not.
Alarms are set purposefully not casually.
On my phone, I have literally 6 - 8 different alarms set to go off during the day to move me from task to task from meeting to meeting.
All of them are set on purpose and I have to keep setting them because every day I have something purposeful I have to get done.
You are to set and keep seeking above on purpose.
These two verbs are imperatives not indicatives.
They tell you what to do if you know who you are now because the Messiah made you alive.
Don’t try to do this the wrong way, you can’t get the results unless you first are dead and brought back to life by Messiah then you seek and set.
