The Conflicts of Today are similar to the Conflicts of Paul’s Day

Two Groups: Circumcision Group vs. UnCircumcision Group

CIRCUMCISION signified externally what has happened to Abraham Internally

Internal not External Circumcision is what really matters

Galatians 5:6 NLT
For when we place our faith in Christ Jesus, there is no benefit in being circumcised or being uncircumcised. What is important is faith expressing itself in love.
Colossians 2:11–12 NLT
When you came to Christ, you were “circumcised,” but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision—the cutting away of your sinful nature. For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.

In this Middle of this Climate, Paul teaches that Jesus Christ bring peace.

Ephesians 2:11–13 NLT
Don’t forget that you Gentiles used to be outsiders. You were called “uncircumcised heathens” by the Jews, who were proud of their circumcision, even though it affected only their bodies and not their hearts. In those days you were living apart from Christ. You were excluded from citizenship among the people of Israel, and you did not know the covenant promises God had made to them. You lived in this world without God and without hope. But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.

Ephesus is mostly Gentiles

Ephesians 2:12–13 NLT
In those days you were living apart from Christ. You were excluded from citizenship among the people of Israel, and you did not know the covenant promises God had made to them. You lived in this world without God and without hope. But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.

Paul describes the Gentiles Former Condition

Apart from Christ

Excluded from citizenship among the people of Israel

Did not know the Covenant Promises God made to them.

Without Hope

Without God

The Gentiles were EXCLUDED from Worshipping God in the Temple.

Pic of temple

Gentiles Could not Worship in the Temple because they were Excluded from the community of God’s People.

Paul is the Minister to the Gentiles.

Ephesians 2:13–18 NLT
But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ. For Christ himself has brought peace to us. He united Jews and Gentiles into one people when, in his own body on the cross, he broke down the wall of hostility that separated us. He did this by ending the system of law with its commandments and regulations. He made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one new people from the two groups. Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death. He brought this Good News of peace to you Gentiles who were far away from him, and peace to the Jews who were near. Now all of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us.

Jesus Ended the Mosiac Law in the sense that He fulfilled all of it’s requirements.

Matthew 5:17–18 NLT
“Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved.

Even-though it was Man who Separated himself from God by his sin, God initiated the act of reconciliation by sending His Son.

Access to the Father does not depend upon any value inherent in the Believer, but is dependent of upon the sacrifice of Christ on his behalf.

Mark 10:15 NLT
I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.”

Our Relationship with God is Not built on WHAT We Know, it’s built on WHO We Know.

The truth is that the alienation between the Gentiles and God was so great that nothing else could fix it, except the death of Jesus Christ.

Because of our sins, nothing else would save us except the death of Jesus Christ

The church is very unique

Jesus brought unity through what He did on the cross.

Jesus’ blood BROKE DOWN the barrier of the dividing wall.

Ephesians 2:19–22 NLT
So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family. Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord. Through him you Gentiles are also being made part of this dwelling where God lives by his Spirit.

Three Pictures of Unification between Jews and Gentiles

A City

A Family

A Building

God is Building a House - Jesus is the Cornerstone!

The Gospel always breaks down walls…..it unites people, and builds up a house where God dwells

We are indeed part of a larger family, which began at the Cross.
