*Abortion*

*Thesis:* To note that abortion is murder and a sin.
*Introduction*:

(1)   Abortion is a HUGE problem in the world today.
(a)    3 key court rulings have opened to door to this practice in our country:
1)      Beginning on Jan. 22, 1973, the infamous Roe v. Wade case was heard.
a)      Roe (a.k.a.
Norma McCorvey) claimed that she was raped and challenged the Texas law that only allowed abortions when the mother’s life was endangered.
b)      The court divided a pregnancy into 3 trimesters and decided that abortion on demand should be available during the first trimester and that individual states should decide what should be done during the 2nd & 3rd.
2)      Also in 1973, a case in GA known as Doe v. Bolton redefined what is meant by the mother’s health to include psychological and emotional health.
3)      In Missouri in 1977, the Planned Parenthood v. Danforth case decided that abortions could be performed without the consent of the husband or parents.
(b)   Since the legalizing of abortion, many babies have been murdered.
1)      In the U.S. alone, over 43 million reported abortions have been performed since 1973.
a)      Roughly, that breaks down to around 4400 a day.
b)      Since 1973, 1~/3 of the potential population has been aborted.
c)      In 2000 alone, 1.31 million pregnancies were terminated by abortion in the U.S.
d)      Consider this number in comparison to the numbers of fatalities from past wars:
-          Revolutionary War = 25,324
-          Civil War = 498,332
-          WWI = 116,708
-          WWII = 407,316
-          Korean War = 54,246
-          Vietnam War = 58,655
Total: 1,160,581
2)      Worldwide, there are around 55 million reported abortions a year (i.e., 150,685 a day; 6,278 per hour; 105 per minute).
(c)    Why are women having abortions?
(Basically … Birth Control)
Þ    Wants to postpone childbearing:  25.5%
Þ    Wants no (more) children:  7.9%
Þ    Cannot afford a baby:  21.3%
Þ    Having a child will disrupt education or job: 10.8%
Þ    Has relationship problem or partner does not want pregnancy: 14.1%
Þ    Too young; parent(s) or other(s) object to pregnancy: 12.2%
Þ    Risk to maternal health: 2.8%
Þ    Risk to fetal health: 3.3%
Þ    Other: 2.1%
(d)   Various Abortion Procedures:
Þ    Suction Aspiration or Vacuum Aspiration Abortion
Þ    Medical Abortion (e.g., RU486)
Þ    Dilatation & Curettage (D&C) or Sharp Curettage Abortion
Þ    Dilation and Evacuation (D and E) Abortion
Þ    Saline Injection Abortion
Þ    Dilation and Extraction (D and X) ~/ Partial Birth Abortion  (Thankfully, this is now banned after President Bush signed the bill on Nov. 5, 2003).
(2)   The key discussion is when life begins and how one views the fetus (i.e., human, potentially human, or subhuman?).
-          At the moment the sperm and egg come together, the zygote is formed with a complete genetic code in tact.
-          After 3 weeks, the heart begins to beat.
-          On the 21st day, the foundation for the brain, spinal cord and central nervous system are established.
-          After 1 month, the liver, kidneys, digestive tract and umbilical cord begin to develop.
The body with a head, primitive ears, mouth and eyes are visible.
The arms and legs begin to appear as tiny buds.
-          Between days 40-43, brain waves can be detected.
-          After the 7th week, the fetus has all the familiar external features and all of the internal organs of an adult.
-          After the 8th week, fingerprints are formed.
*Discussion*:

I.
The Bible teaches that murder is a sin.
A.
“You shall not murder” (Exod.
20:13).
B.     One of the 7 things that God hates is “hands that shed innocent blood” (Prov.
6:17).
II.
The Bible teaches that abortion is murder.
A.
First, the Bible recognizes that the fetus as a human being.
1.
To Jeremiah, God said, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the
      nations” (Jer.
1:5).
2.      Isaiah said, “Listen to me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations: Before I was born the LORD called me; from my birth he has made mention of my name” (Isa.
49:1).
3.      Cf.
David (Psa.
22:9-10); Samson (Judges 13:3-7); Paul (Gal.
1:15); Jacob & Esau (Gen.
25:22; Rom.
9:11); Jesus (Matt.
1:20-21)
4.      Luke used the same word (i.e., brephos) for a child in the womb (i.e., John, Luke 1:41, 44) and a child outside the womb (i.e., Jesus, 2:12, 16).
5.      David wrote: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be” (Psa.
139:13-16).
B.
Second, the Bible regarded the life of the fetus as valuable as that of a human being outside of the womb.
-          Moses wrote: “If men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman's husband demands and the court allows.
But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise” (Exod.
21:22-25).
[Note: Even in America, the courts still recognize that it is murder for someone to kill the baby (without the mother’s consent) inside the mother’s womb.
E.g., Scott Peterson was found guilty of double-murder on Nov. 13, 2004.
Unfortunately, Scott Peterson would have been fine if he had been an abortion doctor and murdered only the baby with the mother’s consent].
III.
What can we do to help with this problem?
A.
First, we must pray.
B.     Second, we must speak up for the innocent.
*Conclusion*:

(1)   In 1995, Norma McCorvey changed her mind and now believes abortion to be wrong.
(2)   Hopefully, our courts will follow suit before anymore innocent children are killed.
