Lessons from the Ark
*Text*: Gen. 6-9
*Thesis*: To observe some key lessons from the ark so that we may be ready to face
judgment.
*Introduction*:
(1) The Old Testament is written for our learning (Rom.
15:4).
(2) There are many great lessons that we may learn from the ark.
(3) For example, consider these 11 from an e-mail:
a) Don’t miss the boat
b) Remember that we are all in the same boat
c) Plan ahead.
It wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark
d) Stay fit.
When you’re 60 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big
e) Don’t listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done
f) Build your future on high ground
g) For safety’s sake, travel in pairs
h) Speed isn’t always an advantage.
The snails were on board with the cheetahs
i) When you’re stressed, float awhile
j) Remember, the ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals
k) No matter the storm, when you are with God, there’s always a rainbow waiting

I.
Sin must be punished.
A.
God’s justice demands that sin be punished; therefore, He decided to send the flood~/judgment upon the world.
B. We must recognize the seriousness of sin.
1. Sin separates us from God (Isa.
59:1-2).
2. The wages of sin is death (Rom.
6:23).
II.
God is longsuffering.
A.
God was longsuffering for 120 years in the days of Noah.
1. Peter called this “Divine longsuffering” (1 Pet.
3:20).
2. During this time, Noah was preaching righteousness to others (2 Pet.
2:5).
B. God is still longsuffering today (2 Pet.
3:9); however, the days are numbered.
III.
We may be saved only by grace.
A.
Noah, a sinner, found grace (i.e., unmerited favor) in God’s eyes (Gen.
6:8).
B. God is still showering us with His grace today.
1.
The ultimate gift of His grace was~/is Jesus (Rom.
5:15).
2. He sent Jesus “while we were yet sinners” (Rom.
5:6-8).
3. We, today, may be saved by “grace through faith” (Eph.
2:8).
IV.
God gives instructions.
A.
Noah was given detailed instructions for the building of the ark.
B. We are give detailed instructions for the living of the godly life.
1. Without directions, we would be lost (cf.
Prov.
14:12).
2. The Bible is our guide.
a.
It is a lamb unto our feet (Psa.
119:105).
b.
It will make us wise unto salvation (2 Tim.
3:15).
c.
We must neither add to it nor take away from it (Rev.
22:18-19).
V.
Only a few will listen.
A.
In the days of Noah, only 8 were saved.
B. Today, only a “few” will walk the narrow way (Matt.
7:13-14).
VI.
We must be on the ark.
A.
Only those on the ark were the ones who were spared.
However, everyone had an opportunity to get onto the ark.
B. The same is true today.
1.
The ark is a place of salvation.
2. The saved today are in the church (Acts 2:47).
3. Therefore, the ark today is the church.

Let us hear God’s voice today so that we don’t have to drown in our sins!
