Genesis 4:16 HCSB
Then Cain went out from the LORD’s presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

The Establishment of a godless society

Starting a family
Genesis 4:17 HCSB
Cain was intimate with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain became the builder of a city, and he named the city Enoch after his son.
Cain would have no doubt married his sister (Genesis 5.4)
Later on God would prohibit such a union and there are plenty of reasons for that.
Here it is a necessity and this early in genetic chain, it wouldn’t be a big deal.
Since these people live so long, its not even necessary that he grew up with her.
Abraham married his half-sister and when it was time for their son and grandson to marry they too married family members, descendants of Abraham’s brother.
Creation of a city
Genesis 4:17 HCSB
Cain was intimate with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain became the builder of a city, and he named the city Enoch after his son.
There are some who see this as a defiance to what God had told him (he would be a wanderer). Indeed Nod is the land of wandering, but Cain is seen as building a city and naming it after his son whose name meant dedicated or initiated.
Specialized occupations
Genesis 4:18–22 HCSB
Irad was born to Enoch, Irad fathered Mehujael, Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech. Lamech took two wives for himself, one named Adah and the other named Zillah. Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of the nomadic herdsmen. His brother was named Jubal; he was the father of all who play the lyre and the flute. Zillah bore Tubal-cain, who made all kinds of bronze and iron tools. Tubal-cain’s sister was Naamah.
seven generations here
Wandering Herdsmen (Jabal means wanderer)
Metal workers
Arts (Jubal means sound)
Among many nations, the development of civilization is attributed to different gods, here the Bible lays out the case that human culture was developed by man in general, the descendants of Cain in particular.

The Degeneration of Society

Polygamy
Genesis 4:19 HCSB
Lamech took two wives for himself, one named Adah and the other named Zillah.
(Genesis 2.24) First recorded case. Think about it. Adam and Eve fell morally and all their children were born sinners. In the next generation one child killed another, 6 generations later a man has two wives.
I have not labored on this much, but it needs to be said, ground zero for Satan is your family. Don’t forget that.
Violence
Genesis 4:23–24 HCSB
Lamech said to his wives: Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, pay attention to my words. For I killed a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me. If Cain is to be avenged seven times over, then for Lamech it will be seventy-seven times!
Some see this as bragging on Lamech’s part, others see that he acted in self defense, I think it is a little of both.
Notice the man wounded him (violence) and he responded with killing him (violence)
And he thought that if God protected Cain, he deserved it more.

A New Start

Genesis 4:25–26 HCSB
Adam was intimate with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, for she said, “God has given me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.” A son was born to Seth also, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of Yahweh.
A new Son.
A new Seeking.
