Sync Series Message #6: Exodus 20:12 The Grove I. WHAT ARE WE BEING CALLED TO DO? ________________ This honor is given to our parents as a __________ ____ _______, not as a response to how our parents treated us or understood us (see previous 4 commandments for clarification). “To honor is to RESPECT, DEFER , and SUBMIT.” - 2017, New Oxford Dictionary This means that we love and appreciate our parents, seeing them as God sees them and _________ ______ ______ ________ for placing them in our lives. II. WHO ARE WE HONORING? We are honoring our _____________ & _______________! ___________ ______________, GOD ALWAYS HAS A PLAN TO RESTORE YOU! God's ideal for a family is that a __________ & ___________ are present and engaged in raising their child or children. “There are widows and widowers, single moms and single dads, orphans, and scenario after scenario where this ideal is not met...but God still has a plan!” The plan is Jesus. ________. ___________. _____________. Notice that in this ideal family the Mother and Father are _______ by __________. CHILDREN: there is no such thing as playing favorites and following this commandment. PARENTS: don't feed the concept of favoritism in your children! Speak and act as if the _________________ _____ ________ _____ ________ is at play! That helps teach your kids to HONOR BOTH! Discipline from ___ __________ ______ ____________: "Your father / mother and I..." FATHERS: Don't attempt to see your kids understand the 5th commandment if you are not honoring their mom! MOTHERS: Don't expect the kids to get it if you are not honoring their dad! _____ ______ _____________ by SHOWING you belong beside one another. III. HOW DO WE HONOR OUR FATHER AND MOTHER? First, how do we follow this command when our parents have acted in a dishonorable way, or are absent from our lives? A - OFFER ____________ THROUGH CHRIST. That is not God's design for your household.” PARENT IN A WAY THAT __________ _____________ __________________! God loves it when we recognize our need to be under His authority because He loves us and has our best at heart! Show them that you will pursue them and love them no matter what, just as God does with you.
