The Holy Spirit in the life of a Christian

What a great text we have to talk about this morning. For most of 30 years there is little information about Jesus and now Mark jumps in and gets write to the point in which He is baptised, confirmed and then tempted. I want us to take a moment though and think about what is happening here. Before us is the eternal Son of God, that gave up His place their and to humbly become the redeemer for all mankind. Now, as far as we know, this is the first time that Jesus hears from God I can’t imagine what He must have felt in that moment after 30 years of silence and now hearing God’s voice and having the Spirit descend upon Him, it had to be such a huge encouragement to Him. This scene is about prophecy fulfilment, confirmation, suffering and encouragement. Which He was going to need because the Spirit “immediately” Mark says drove him out to the wilderness to be tempted by Satan.
What I would like to talk about this morning is how a prophecy in Isaiah was fulfilled here, but more specifically a look into how the Spirit played a critical role in Jesus’ ministry, the story of the bible, the lives of the early Christians and our lives today.

The Holy Spirit empowered Jesus Christ as Messiah

Is 11:2, 42:1, Ac 10:38
Isaiah 11:2 LEB
And the spirit of Yahweh shall rest on him— a spirit of wisdom and understanding, a spirit of counsel and might, a spirit of knowledge and the fear of Yahweh.
Isaiah 42:1 LEB
Look! here is my servant; I hold him, my chosen one, in whom my soul delights. I have put my spirit on him; he will bring justice forth to the nations.
These are just a couple verses that point to the event here in Mark and indicate the role the Spirit was to play in Jesus' ministry. God wanted His son to succeed and it was the Spirit that gave Jesus the tools he needed in order to see His ministry tot he end. God doesn't want anything different for us. He wants us to succeed as well, He wants us to stay on mission, on His mission. In Acts 10:38 we take a look back at what the Holy Spirit did throughout Jesus' ministry.
Acts 10:38 LEB
Jesus of Nazareth—how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with him.
"God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power,"

The Holy Spirit inspired the prophets

Neh 9:30, "you have warned them by your spirit throughthe hand of your prophets,"
Is 48:16, Mic 3:8, Heb 1:1,
Nehemiah 9:30 LEB
You were patient toward them for many years, and you have warned them by your spirit through the hand of your prophets, but they did not listen. So you gave them into the hand of the nations of the lands.
Isaiah 48:16 LEB
Draw near to me; hear this! I have not spoken in secrecy from the beginning; from the time it came to be, there I have been; And now the Lord Yahweh has sent me and his Spirit.”
Micah 3:8 LEB
But I, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of Yahweh, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his rebellion, and to Israel his sin.
Hebrews 1:1 LEB
Although God spoke long ago in many parts and in many ways to the fathers by the prophets,
God spoke thru the prophets "in many ways" the Hebrew writer says, in order to bring about God's will in the times in which they lived.

The Holy Spirit empowered the first Christians

Acts 1:8 LEB
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the farthest part of the earth.”
Acts 1:8 "But you will receive powerwhen the Holy Spirit has come upon you,"
Ac 2:16-17, Ac 11:15
Acts 2:16–17 LEB
But this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘And it will be in the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, and your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
Acts 11:15 LEB
And as I was beginning to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, just as also on us at the beginning.
The Holy Spirit was active in the lives of the early Christians in order to spread the Gospel message to known world at that time. The Spirit emboldened, encouraged and gave words to the Apostles and disciples in that time. But that was not just reserved for the early church, Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit to help us today as well.

He empowers God's people today

John 14:16 LEB
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, in order that he may be with you forever—
Spurgeon’s Worse Sermon
Mr. Spurgeon once preached what in his judgment was one of his poorest sermons. He stammered and floundered, and when he got through he felt that it had been a complete failure. He was greatly humiliated, and when he got home he fell on his knees and said, “Lord, God, Thou canst do something with nothing. Bless that poor sermon.”
And all through the week he uttered that prayer. He woke up in the night and prayed about it. He determined that the next Sunday he would redeem himself by preaching a great sermon. Sure enough, the next Sunday the sermon went off beautifully. At the close the people crowded about him and covered him with praise. Spurgeon went home pleased with himself, and that night he slept like a baby. But he said to himself, “I’ll watch the results of those two sermons.” What were they?
From the one that has seemed a failure he was able to trace forty-one conversions. And from that magnificent sermon he was unable to discover that a single soul was saved. The Spirit of God used the one and did not use the other. We can do nothing without the Spirit who helps our infirmities.
Rom. 8:26-27 "but the Spirit himself intercedesfor us with unexpressed groanings. And the one who searches our heartsknows what mindset of the Sprit is,"
Romans 8:26–27 LEB
And likewise also, the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as one ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with unexpressed groanings. And the one who searches our hearts knows what the mindset of the Spirit is, because he intercedes on behalf of the saints according to the will of God.
1 Corinthians 12:3–7 LEB
Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is accursed,” and no one is able to say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit, and there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord, and there are varieties of activities, but the same God, who works all things in all people. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for what is beneficial to all.

The Holy Spirit accomplishes the mission of God

He convicts sin

John 16:8 "And when he comes, he will convict the worldconcerning sin..."
Ac 2:37, 1 Cor 14:24-25
John 16:8 LEB
And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and concerning righteousness and concerning judgment:
Acts 2:37 LEB
Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “What should we do, men and brothers?”
1 Corinthians 14:24–25 LEB
But if all prophesy, and some unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is judged by all, the secret things of his heart become evident, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God, proclaiming, “God is truly among you!”

He directs mission

Acts 13:2, 8:29, 10:19-20, 13:4, 16:6-10
Acts 13:2 LEB
And while they were serving the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart now for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
Acts 8:29 LEB
And the Spirit said to Philip, “Approach and join this chariot.”
Acts 10:19–20 LEB
And while Peter was reflecting about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, men are looking for you. But get up, go down, and go with them—not hesitating at all, because I have sent them.”
Acts 13:4 LEB
Therefore, sent out by the Holy Spirit, they came down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed away to Cyprus.
Acts 16:6–10 LEB
And they traveled through the Phrygian and Galatian region, having been prevented by the Holy Spirit from speaking the message in Asia. And when they came to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them. So going through Mysia, they went down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul during the night: a certain Macedonian man was standing there and imploring him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us!” And when he had seen the vision, we wanted at once to go away to Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them.

He inspires witnesses and speakers

Ac 6:9-10, Matt 10:19-20, Act 2:14
Acts 6:9–10 LEB
But some of those from the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), both Cyrenians and Alexandrians, and those from Cilicia and Asia, stood up and disputed with Stephen. And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking.
Matthew 10:19–20 LEB
But whenever they hand you over, do not be anxious how to speak or what you should say, for what you should say will be given to you at that hour. For you are not the ones who are speaking, but the Spirit of your Father who is speaking through you.
Acts 2:14 LEB
But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them, “Judean men, and all those who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and pay attention to my words!

The Holy Spirit's missionary activity is ongoing

He cares for God's people involved in mission

John 16:13, Ac 15:28
John 16:13 LEB
But when he—the Spirit of truth—comes, he will guide you into all the truth. For he will not speak from himself, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will proclaim to you the things to come.
Acts 15:28 LEB
For it seemed best to the Holy Spirit and to us to place on you no greater burden except these necessary things:

He sanctifies God's people

Rom 8:10,14,16, 2Thes 2:13
Romans 8:10 LEB
But if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
Romans 8:14 LEB
For all those who are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
Romans 15:16 LEB
with the result that I am a servant of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, serving the gospel of God as a priest, in order that the offering of the Gentiles may become acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
2 Thessalonians 2:13 LEB
But we ought to give thanks to God always concerning you, brothers dearly loved by the Lord, because God has chosen you as first fruits for salvation by the sanctification of the Spirit and faith in the truth,

He encourages God's people

Rom 8:16 "The Spirit himself confirms to our spirit the we are childrenof God,"
2 Thes 2:17, John 3:24, 1 John 4:13
Romans 8:16 LEB
The Spirit himself confirms to our spirit that we are children of God,
Romans 8:27 LEB
And the one who searches our hearts knows what the mindset of the Spirit is, because he intercedes on behalf of the saints according to the will of God.
2 Thessalonians 2:17 LEB
encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good work and word.
John 3:24 LEB
(For John had not yet been thrown into prison.)
1 John 4:13 LEB
By this we know that we reside in him and he in us: that he has given us of his Spirit.
These few scriptures don't even scratch the surface of the NT references to the Holy Spirit. But you can see that the Spirit has played a crucial role in the story of redemption and continues to work in the hearts of minds of believers. When we are on mission the Holy Spirit is there to help and there to strengthen and sanctify. We should have great comfort in knowing that the Spirit reminding us that we are children of God. The same Spirit that was there when Jesus needed him the most is there to guide all those that will reach out in prayer.
