DEVOTIONAL GUIDE

FOR

THE FELLOWSHIP OF SHORT-TERM MISSION TEAM LEADERS

OCTOBER 8-12, 2004

Preparation for Suffering

Theme Verse:  John 16:33

John 16:29 His disciples said,  “Lo, now You are speaking plainly and are not using a figure of speech. 30  “Now we know that You know all things, and have no need for anyone to question You; by this we believe that You came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them,  “Do you now believe? 32  “Behold, an hour is coming, and has [already] come, for you to be scattered, each to his own [home], and to leave Me alone; and [yet] I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33  “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”

John 16:33

33a     These things I have spoken to you,

b      so that in Me you may have peace.

c      in the world you have tribulation,

    d      but take courage;

e      I have overcome the world.”

When Jesus says that each day has enough trouble of its own, he’s talking about short-term mission team life along with every other dimension of life.  As short-term mission team leaders we need a vision of God that will sustain us in the most difficult troubles and we need a strategy for being overcomers amidst the troubles and we need to learn how to better prepare our teams for suffering.

Memorize this verse this week.  I’ve prepared a devotional guide to help you reflect more on each day’s topics.

Theme Verse: John 16:33 I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace.  In this world you will have trouble.  But take heart!  I have overcome the world (NIV).

Here are some other translations of John 16:33

KJV Joh 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

NAS Joh 16:33 "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world."

What follows are some ideas for individual devotions and small group discussions.  Choose one or two each day and invite the Lord to speak to you through His Word.

Thursday--In Me you have peace; in the world you have trouble

1) Jesus said, “I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace.”

The purpose (cf. “so that”) behind the teachings of Jesus in general and especially here in chapters 14-16 (cf.”these things”) is that we who are His followers experience peace (see “Why Does Jesus Talk” below).  In the next few days you may want to meditate on these chapters.  As you do, make a list all the things Jesus says that if you really trust His words will strengthen both individual peace within your own soul and corporate peace within your teams.

2) The key to peace in our hearts and in our teams is found in John 14:1.  Describe it in your own words.  Make a list of the things you are troubled about now or that you are prone to be troubled about in pressured times on your teams.  Bring them before the Lord and pray about them in light of Jesus’ words here.  Ask people in your small group to talk about the things that trouble them.  Pray with them about it.  Point them to the words of Jesus.

3) Think of an area your life where there’s the least amount of peace.  Try to find something in the words of Jesus in John 14-16 (or elsewhere) that applies directly to this area.  Meditate on this and ask God to help your trust in His promises to grow.

4) If you are being especially tempted these days to pursue your peace and security in this world rather than through trust in Jesus Christ, choose one or two of the following Scriptures to prayerfully meditate on:  1 John 2:15-17; Psalm 73; Jeremiah 2:11-13; Isaiah 55:1-3; Matthew 7:24-27; Isaiah 50:10-11.

5)  Look at the page entitled “What the Bible Says About Peace”.  Read through this list and find:   1) some promises about peace

                                    2) the foundations for peace

                                    3) obstacles to peace

                                    4) the source of peace

                                    5) the perfect future peace which we all long for

                                    6) the way to peace

6) Read the story of Jesus calming the storm (Mark 4:35-41).  Talk about His power to conquer anything that threatens us.  Notice that even the disciples (just like you) wondered sometimes if Jesus cared about them.  Reassure your own (and one another’s) heart that He does.

Friday--Take heart!

1)  Think about how the following thoughts relate to each other:

Thought #1:  In the world you have trouble.

Thought #2:  Take heart! Take courage! Be of good cheer!

Thought #3:  I have overcome the world.

Sometimes when people speak they leave out the connecting words between thoughts because the connection is so obvious. (For example, “The house is on fire.  Get out!”  The connecting words which are left out are “therefore” and “since”.  Since the house is on fire, therefore get out.)  In the above three thoughts Jesus left out some of the connecting words because in His mind they are so obvious.  Are they obvious to you?  What connecting words would you insert between these thoughts to make the meaning absolutely clear.  Ponder these connections.  They are a goldmine!

2) Ponder what is unique about the peace that is in Jesus.  Read John 14:27 where Jesus says that His peace is different than the peace that the world gives.  What is the difference?  One of the differences that comes to my mind is reflected in verses like Ps. 23:5a; Habakkuk 3:17-19; Isaiah 54:10. Do you think this is what Paul means when he writes about “the peace of God which surpasses all comprehension” (Phil. 4:7)?

3) The command, “take heart” or “take courage” or “be of good cheer” (these are various translations of the same Greek word in John 16:33) is often on the lips of Jesus or the apostles (see “Take Courage” below). Read two or three of the stories where Jesus tells someone to “take heart” (Mt. 9:1-7; Mt. 9:18-26; Mark 10:46-52 [here Jesus’ disciples tell Bartimaeus to “cheer up”]; Mt. 14:22-32; Acts 23:9-11).

4)  Did you realize that the command, “Thou shalt be happy!” is found many times throughout the Bible.  It occurs (in various forms) much more often than the commands, “Thou shalt not murder!  Thou shalt not steal!  Thou shalt not commit adultery!”  Yet somehow we think the command to be happy is optional and we do not tend to ascribe this command the same authority as we do the “Thou shalt nots” of the Bible.  It is the same God who commands both.  An old preacher named Jeremy Taylor shocked his congregation by saying, “God threatens terrible things if we will not be happy!”  Discuss why the Bible doesn’t regard joy as optional.  What do you think is the nature of this joy? Meditate on Deuteronomy 28:47-48 and ask God to jar you into joy!  Along the same lines, consider also 2 Cor. 9:7.

 Wednesday--I have overcome the world

1) Jesus has overcome the world.  Through the cross He has conquered everything that is opposed to God and everything that is opposed to the good of God’s children (Col 2:13-15).  Today help one another to understand that since God is for us, who can be against us?  Meditate on Rom. 8:31-39 and try to paraphrase it.

2) We live in a world that victimizes people.  Thus many people have assumed the identity of victim, which leaves one helpless, bitter, and paralyzed.  God commands us not to succumb to the victim mentality (Rom. 12:21).  When confronted with troubles many people try to cope through denial, escape, fantasy, retaliation, etc.  But the Bible gives the Christian a theology of trouble that helps us not only to persevere through trouble but even to rejoice in the midst of trouble.  Consider for a moment the troubles that are confronting your life these days and then prayerfully meditate on the Scriptures printed on the sheet “What the Bible Says About Trouble”.

Why Does Jesus Talk?

John 15:11  “These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and [that] your joy may be made full.

John 16:1 “These things I have spoken to you so that you may be kept from stumbling. 2  “They will make you outcasts from the synagogue, but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God. 3  “These things they will do because they have not known the Father or Me. 4  “But these things I have spoken to you, so that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you of them. These things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you. 5 “But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me,  ‘Where are You going?’ 6  “But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7  “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

16:33  “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”

17:1 Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said,  “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You…

17:13  “But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves.

What the Bible Says About “Take Courage”

(Gr. tharseo qarse÷w)

Matt. 9:2 And they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic,  “Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven.”

Matt. 9:22 But Jesus turning and seeing her said,  “Daughter, take courage; your faith has made you well.” At once the woman was made well. (The woman who suffered from a hemorrhage for twelve years)

Mark 6:50 They all saw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and said to them,  “Take courage; it is I, do not be afraid.” (cf. Matt. 14:27 Jesus walking on the water)

Mark 10:49 And Jesus stopped and said,  “Call him [here].” So they called the blind man (Bartimaeus), saying to him,  “Take courage, stand up! He is calling for you.”

John 16:33  “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”

Acts 23:11 But on the night [immediately] following, the Lord stood at his side and said,  “Take courage; for as you have solemnly witnessed to My cause at Jerusalem, so you must witness at Rome also.” (Paul in the barracks after he caused an uproar in the Sanhedrin; the soldiers took him there to save him from being torn to pieces)

What the Bible Says About Trouble

The Bible promises that we will have trouble

Joh 16:33 "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world."

Mat 6:34 "Therefore do not be anxious for tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Job 5:6 "For affliction does not come from the dust, Neither does trouble sprout from the ground, 7 For man is born for trouble, As sparks fly upward.

1Co 7:28 But if you should marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin should marry, she has not sinned. Yet such will have trouble in this life, and I am trying to spare you.

1Th 3:3 so that no man may be disturbed by these afflictions; for you yourselves know that we have been destined for this. 4 For indeed when we were with you, we kept telling you in advance that we were going to suffer affliction; and so it came to pass, as you know.

Act 14:21 And after they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, 22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying, "Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God."

Sometimes God feels far away when we are in trouble

Psa 10:1 Why dost Thou stand afar off, O LORD? Why dost Thou hide Thyself in times of trouble?

Psa 77:4 Thou hast held my eyelids open; I am so troubled that I cannot speak.

Psa 88:3 For my soul has had enough troubles, And my life has drawn near to Sheol.

Promises to help in times of trouble

Psa 9:9 The LORD also will be a stronghold for the oppressed, A stronghold in times of trouble,

Psa 20:1 {For the choir director. A Psalm of David.} May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob set you securely on high!

Psa 27:5 For in the day of trouble He will conceal me in His tabernacle; In the secret place of His tent He will hide me; He will lift me up on a rock.

Psa 31:7 I will rejoice and be glad in Thy lovingkindness, Because Thou hast seen my affliction; Thou hast known the troubles of my soul,

Psa 32:7 Thou art my hiding place; Thou dost preserve me from trouble; Thou dost surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah.

Psa 34:6 This poor man cried and the LORD heard him, And saved him out of all his troubles.

Psa 34:17 The righteous cry and the LORD hears, And delivers them out of all their troubles.

Psa 37:39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; He is their strength in time of trouble.

Psa 138:7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, Thou wilt revive me; Thou wilt stretch forth Thy hand against the wrath of my enemies, And Thy right hand will save me.

Nah 1:7 The LORD is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble, And He knows those who take refuge in Him.

Rom 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

2Co 4:17 For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison,

Prayer in times of trouble

Psa 22:11 Be not far from me, for trouble is near; For there is none to help.

Psa 142:2 I pour out my complaint before Him; I declare my trouble before Him.

Psa 143:11 For the sake of Thy name, O LORD, revive me. In Thy righteousness bring my soul out of trouble.

How we are to respond to trouble

Isa 50:10 Who is among you that fears the LORD, That obeys the voice of His servant, That walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God.

Luk 24:38 And He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?

Joh 14:1 "Let not your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.

Joh 14:27 "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.

Rom 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Rom 12:12 rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer,

Rom 5:3 And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance;

Jam 1:2 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

The day is coming when our troubles will be forgotten

Gen 41:51 And Joseph named the first-born Manasseh, "For," he said, "God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father's household."

Isa 25:8 He will swallow up death for all time, And the Lord GOD will wipe tears away from all faces, And He will remove the reproach of His people from all the earth; For the LORD has spoken.

Rev 7:17 for the Lamb in the center of the throne shall be their shepherd, and shall guide them to springs of the water of life; and God shall wipe every tear from their eyes. "

Rev 21:4 and He shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there shall no longer be any death; there shall no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away. "

1Co 15:57 but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Rom 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Rev 2:11 'He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.'

Rev 2:26 'And he who overcomes, and he who keeps My deeds until the end, TO HIM I WILL GIVE AUTHORITY OVER THE NATIONS;

Rev 3:5 'He who overcomes shall thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father, and before His angels.

Rev 3:12 'He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he will not go out from it anymore; and I will write upon him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God, and My new name.

Rev 3:21 'He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.

Rev 21:7 "He who overcomes shall inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.
