2 Timothy 2:15 Class 2

March 17, 2007

2 Timothy 2:15 (NASB95)
15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.

There is a standard of Bible teaching that must not be compromised.

Philippians 3:17 (NASB95)
17 Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us.

2 Timothy 1:13 (NASB95)
13 Retain the standard of sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 2:2 (Amplified New Testament)
And the [instructions] which you have heard from me along with many witnesses, transmit and entrust [as a deposit] to reliable and faithful men who will be competent and qualified to teach others also.

  1. When a man believes wrongly, he will soon act wrongly

    • It is possible to determine the truth in scripture
    • Every issue does not have two sides
    • There is only one correct interpretation of the Bible
    • To correctly interpret you must understand what the writer meant

  1. There are three steps to proper inductive Bible study to avoid incorrect interpretation
    • Observation-what does the text say
    • Interpretation-what does the text-mean
    • Application-how should the text be applied
    • It is our God given duty to correctly interpret scripture
    • Who can interpret God’s Word correctly?

  1. Seven Criteria that you must have in order to correctly and accurately interpret God’s Word
    • You must be born a gain (1 Corinthians 2:14)
    • You must work at it (2 Timothy 2:15)
    • You must want it (1 Peter 2:2)
    • You must be holy (1 Peter 2:1)
    • You must have no idols (Ezekiel 14:4)
    • You must be Spirit-controlled (1 John 2:26-27)
    • You must be a person of fervent prayer ( Ephesians 1:15-18a)

Ephesians 1:15-20 (Amplified New Testament)
15 For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints (the people of God), 16 I do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers. 17 [For I always pray to] the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, that He may grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation [of insight into mysteries and secrets] in the [deep and intimate] knowledge of Him, 18 By having the eyes of your heart flooded with light, so that you can know and understand the hope to which He has called you, and how rich is His glorious inheritance in the saints (His set-apart ones), 19 And [so that you can know and understand] what is the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of His power in and for us who believe, as demonstrated in the working of His mighty strength, 20 Which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His [own] right hand in the heavenly [places],

Psalm 119 A Celebration and Exaltation of the Word of God has prayer as a request at its heart.  vs. 148,vs 18
