2 Kings 22 – 23:20

Video – Can You Hear Me Now?

50th Wedding Anniversary of a couple.
After the party and the family all went home this couple who had enjoyed celebrating the 50 years of good memories walked out onto the front porch to sit and share the sunset together.
Ted loosed his tie and leaned back and didn’t say much.
Bessie looked at him somewhat in wonder and said to him, “You know Ted, I’m real proud of you.”
The old gentleman turned and looked rather quizzically and after a moment said, with a puzzled look on his face, “Well Bessie, I’m real tired of you too!”

What are some of the essential elements of listening to God?

/‘To whom can I give warning?
Who will listen when I speak?
Their ears are closed, and they cannot hear.
They scorn the word of the Lord.
They don’t want to listen at all.”/
Jeremiah 6:10  (NLT)

Brings to mind the image of a child with their hands over their ears going lah, lah, lah.
Read 2 Kings 22:1-7

Did what was pleasing to God.
We can be doing all of the right things and still not have an encounter with God.
Read 2 Kings 22:8-11

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU HEAR THE WORD  OF GOD?

* *Realize my condition*

2 Kings 22:11  (NLT)  “When the king heard what was written in the Book of the Law, he tore his clothes in despair.
When God’s Word was found and heard drastic changes had to be made – brokenness .
How much change must you make in order to bring your life in line with God’s Word?
Just one reading of God’s Word brought change to Josiah and the nation.
Many own copies of the Bible but few are affected by the truths found in God’s Word.
*WHAT DO YOU DO AFTER YOU HEAR THE WORD?*
The Word of God should cause us, like Josiah to take action immediately to reform our lives and bring them in line with God’s Word and plan.
* *It Causes **me to change.*
Read 2 Kings 22:12-13  (NLT)  /“Then he gave these orders to Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Acbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the court secretary, and Asaiah the king’s personal adviser:  “Go to the Temple and speak to the Lord for me and for the people and for all Judah.
Ask him about the words written in this scroll that has been found.
The Lord’s anger is burning against us because our ancestors have not obeyed the words in this scroll.
We have not been doing what this scroll says we must do.”/
Romans 12:2
/“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.
Then you will know what God wants you to do, and you will know how good and pleasing and perfect his will really is.”/

70% of all change efforts fail according to a Harvard Study.
The number one reason they fail is there is a *lack of urgency to change.*
Example of a boat floating down the river with not a care in the world not realizing there is a water fall coming up that will smash the boat on the rocks below.
I’m comfortable.
Do I have to change right now?  I’ll wait until it is convenient.
It will be that way until there is a sense that the status quo is more dangerous than the change.
* *To Seek Godly advice* –
Read 2 Kings 22:14-20

*WHAT IS THE RESULT OF LISTENING?*
* *It brings Reform *

Read 2 Kings 23:1-3
/“Then the king summoned all the leaders of //Judah// and //Jerusalem//.
And the king went up to the //Temple// of the Lord with all the people of //Judah// and //Jerusalem//, and the priests, and the prophets—all the people from the least to the greatest.
There the king read to them the entire Book of the Covenant that had been found in the Lord’s //Temple//.
The king took his place of authority beside the pillar and renewed the covenant in the Lord’s presence.
He pledged to obey the Lord by keeping all his commands, regulations, and laws with all his heart and soul.
In this way, he confirmed all the terms of the covenant that were written in the scroll, and all the people pledged themselves to the covenant.”/
Starts with the *Leader*
Then moves to the *people*.
* *It is evidenced **by the way **we live.*
Read 2 Kings 23:4-20
What things are you changing in your life because you have encountered God?
We sometimes have things in our lives that we know go against what God would have for us and our excuse is, “well when God shows me he wants me to stop, change, start,…then I’ll work on it.”
Yes it is a process, but is not an excuse to do nothing.
The reforms that Josiah made did not happen all at once, but neither did he say “I’ll do that some other time when I feel like it.”
Joshua 1:6-9
6 “Be strong and courageous, for you will lead my people to possess all the land I swore to give their ancestors.
7 Be strong and very courageous.
Obey all the laws Moses gave you.
Do not turn away from them, and you will be successful in everything you do.
8 Study this Book of the Law continually.
Meditate on it day and night so you may be sure to obey all that is written in it.
Only then will you succeed.
9 I command you—be strong and courageous!
Do not be afraid or discouraged.
For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Matthew 7:24-27
24 “Anyone who listens to my teaching and obeys me is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.
25 Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse, because it is built on rock.
26 But anyone who hears my teaching and ignores it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand.
27 When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will fall with a mighty crash.”
Luke 8:18
18 So be sure to pay attention to what you hear.
To those who are open to my teaching, more understanding will be given.
But to those who are not listening, even what they think they have will be taken away from them.”
What things are you changing in your life because you have encountered God and are listening to Him?
Things I will Do this week because of hearing God.
