The Gospel
Mark 1:14-20
*14*After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.
*15*"The time has come," he said.
"The kingdom of God is near.
Repent and believe the good news!"
*16*As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.
*17*"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." *18*At once they left their nets and followed him.
*19*When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets.

Introduction:
First time we hear Jesus’ voice
First Time Jesus speaks and immediately the first thing he says is “repent and believe the Gospel of the Kingdom and follow me.”
First thing he calls us is to follow him.

**Unique Call*
a. People~/students sought out rabies

Even in Old testaments~/ Prophets did not seek out students

Here what Jesus is saying is that you cannot have a relationship with me unless I call you.

And the call I am calling you into will change the world.

**Unique because of the word Gospel*
a. Evangelan = Gospel

It was not a religious word
In fact we have an inscription about Caesar Augustus about the same t8ime as mark wrote these gospel.
An ancient Roman inscription that says
“The beginning of the Gospel of Caesar Augustus”
It was the story of Caesar Augustus birth and victory
The Gospel was history event that changed everything,
When Greece was invaded by Persia
Greeks won the great battle of Marathon

When they won these battle they sent harols~/evangelist runners who brought the good news (gospel) to the people
Ex.
They were usually man who were too small or to weak to actually fight in the battles.
They would ride for days with only canteens of water.
Bringing great joy by announcing, “You have free”
That’s the Gospel.
God uses the weak to shame the strong.
The foolish to shame the wise.
You see essence of other religion is advice
Christianity is Gospel
Other religion says:
- This is what you have to do
- This is how you need to live to be saved
The Gospel is this is what has been done in history for you.
That’s why the Gospel is a call of Grace
If you hear advice
- Maybe you may get inspired.
- But it becomes burden
Does it make you feel like how the villages felt when they heard they have won the battle and now they have been set free?
Gospel is not based on what you have accomplished but on what Christ had done.
Second, the uniqueness is found in the word “Kingdom”
Gen 1-2 (relationship was prefect because God was a king)
But in Gen. 3 there was a shift.
We have chosen to be our own king
- We have gone to self center ness
- When we decided to be our own king everything fell apart
Gospel of Kingdom is that Jesus is the true King
King of a healing hands
JRR Token write, “The hands of a king is a healing hands thus the rightful king is known.”
When we come back under the kingship of Jesus everything will began to heal
III.
The unique call of total surrender
a. What Jesus is saying is radical
Don’t come to me because I am relevant, or to make you a better person and don’t come to me because I will make you happy.
OH I will be most relevant and fulfilling but I wont be to you because of these thing But come to me because I am your true king.
But it will be a process
Sea = darkness = self centerness
The word “Make” is not in present tense rather it is in imperfect tense.
As we follow it’s a process of drawing people~/fish out of self centerness.
HOW?
When they see in us how we are not self center~/ how Christ has been made king in our life.
Fulfillment and who does not want that?
