Lord of the Storm
Mark 4:35-41
*35* On that day, when evening came, He said to them, "Let us go over to the other side."
*36*Leaving the crowd, they took Him along with them in the boat, just as He was; and other boats were with Him.
*37*And there arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling up.
*38*Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?"
*39*And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Hush, be still."
And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm.
*40*And He said to them, "Why are you afraid?
Do you still have no faith?"
*41*They became very much afraid and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?"
Purpose of the passage is that Jesus is the Lord of storm of our life.
Today I will show you two ways why many of us are stuck in storms of our life and how we can get out of it.
*First, even though this is rather a short passage but pack with detail.*
The scripture tells us that it happened in the evening
In Verse 36 it says “just as he was” and this is referring to beginning of the chapter four, when Jesus got into the boat to withdrew from the crowd.
Jesus got from that boat to this boat without going to the shore.
When he first started out there are other boats around he

What is the significant of all that?
It’s very significant

A major New testament scholar who said she would prone to believe it’s a legion.
Now legend is define in such:
A story respecting saints; especially, one of a marvelous nature.
Any wonderful story coming down from the past, but not verifiable by historical record; a myth; a fable.
An inscription, motto, or title, esp.
one surrounding the field in a medal or coin, or placed upon an heraldic shield or beneath an engraving or illustration.
Majority scholar would start off starting that this might be a legend
Because of the legion flavor of the Lord.
Legend deals with disaster of nature.
Calming the sea because only God can calm the sea
Sea was uncontrollable except by God.
King canute Danish king in 11th century where people thought that he was divine.
He said am I divine and went to the sea and said stop and the sea kept coming.
You would think at first glance this passage was a legion but she said except for the details.
What she meant by that look at the detail.
Why would you tell the reader that there were other boats around the area?
It does not add to the story.
Why does it tell us that Jesus did not get back to the shore but rather jump from one boat to another and that he slept particular at the back of the boat on a cushion.
WHY?
The reason is that these are memory of an eyewitness of someone.
Because back in those days unlike today where in fiction you would write detail.

No, Back in those days legend was just not written that way.
Conclusion is that this has to be eye written reporting.
Why is this important?
*Jesus is either a legion or Lord of the Storm.*
Notice Disciples reaction they said, “If you love us you will not allow us to go through the storm.”
First, they knew the power but yet lacked faith.
Problem is that for many of us Jesus is just a legion a concept not the Lord and you don’t call upon the concept to change the storm.
Barbara boyld wrote.
“If the distance between earth and the sun (92 million miles) is only the thickness of a paper.
And if that was the case you realize the distance between earth and the nearest start is stack of paper stacked up 70 feet high.
Then the diameter of our little galaxy would be stack of paper 310 miles high.
That means our galaxy is a speck of dust compare to the universe and if the Lord uphold all that with a word of his mouth.
Tip of his fingerer, is this the kind of person you would ask to come into your life just to be an assistant?”
Is this a person you would say, I only call upon you as long as it fits in my plan?
In all your ways… all your ways acknowledge him.
This is a way you know you have unconditional trust in God.
Look at every area of your life and ask two questions
Are you willing to do what every God say in scripture rather you agree with it or not
Are you willing to accept that anything God sends or happens in that area rather you understand it or not.
We are constantly stuck in storms because we don’t believe He can get us out of it.
*Second, Mark is purposefully when putting this story together*
Secret of meaning to this passage lies in the fact that Mark deliberately lays out in this account using language that is identical to the story of Jonah (chapter 1) in the boat in the storm.
If you compare you will see unbelievable parallel.
Both Jesus and Jonah is our in a boat and there comes this storm.
The description of the storm is almost identical.
Mark *37*And there arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking over the boat
Jonah 1a great wind on the sea and there was a great storm on the sea so that the ship was about to break up.
Both Jesus and Jonah is sleep in the storm
The sailor comes to sleeper, we are parsing and they both use the same Greek word “apolomie”.
Mark verse 38“do You not care that we are perishing?"
Jonah: Verse 6 “concerned about us so that we will not perish."
In both case the sailor comes to Jesus and Jonah and said do something.
Both case there is a miraculous intervention by God and the sea is calm.
Mark 39 “wind died down and it became perfectly calm.”
And in both incidents after the calming of the sea they are both afraid.
*Mark 41*They became very much afraid
Jonah *10*Then the men became extremely frightened.
So what we have here is almost identical story.. or there was one difference in the story.
Do you remember what the difference is?
One little difference
Jonah in the midst of the storm he said there is only one thing to do.
Jonah said “If I die you will live” and they threw him in.
Yeah that’s one thing different or is it?
Mark is telling us the stories are not different at all
Matthew 12 Jesus said “I am the true Jonah”
What does he mean?
Jesus said someday he will calm all storms.
He is going to kill death.
All storm will be gone.
How can he do that?
He can only do that on the cross.
Unless you burn that to the center of your heart that He died and did not abandon you that will give you hope in your storm.
