Grow in Grace

1 Peter 2:1-2

The first thing we notice from this text is that Christians are to lay aside certain things.

Yet, the laying aside certain undesirable traits in our lives is an expectation that is neither facilitates salvation nor contributes to it!

From the first two verses we can see that the objective is to Grow Spiritually.

I.                   The relationship between laying aside, and the milk of the word, is what brings growth.

A.     Some try it in the flesh.

I’ll clean up my act and God will be pleased.

B.     Some prefer it all in the word, doing nothing with their character.

C.     It must be a coordinated effort.

We must lay aside the sin that so easily besets us (Hebrews 12:1) and desire God’s word for growth.

II.                The Terms defined.

A.     The undesirable traits are not subject to conversion.

i.e. They are not taken away at conversion.

B.     These traits are the result of human nature.

Κακια               1) Malice = malignity, malice, ill-will, desire to injure

Δολος               2) Guile = dello (probably meant to decoy; GK 1515; 12 occurrences; AV translates as “guile” seven times, “subtilty” twice,

Υποκρισις         3) Hypocrisy =  the acting of a stage player. 4 dissimulation, hypocrisy.

Φθονος              4) Envy = , i.e. prompted by envy.
