A Prophet?”
§ His answer…*YES*
Ø The doubt shown by John does not diminish him as a prophet of God
§ As we saw several weeks ago…
· Even great men of God have their times of weakness

§ Jesus wants to reassure the people that John was indeed a prophet
· Even though some of his prophecies were not coming about…

§ We must remember why John had doubt?
· He prophesied that the Messiah would usher in a time of judgment
¨ 3:17 ~~ Winnowing fork in his hand, burn chaff with unquenchable fire
¨ 3:9 ~~ Ready to cut the bad trees down and throw them into the fire
§ And these prophesies were not coming true
· So he doubted
v But what we have to understand something about prophecy
Ø But like so many prophets before him…
§ John was given prophecy of both Jesus’ first and second coming
Ø Turn to the book of Zephaniah (p.1463)
§ “Day of the Lord” language = Messiah’s coming
· *Zephaniah 1:7* ~~ Day of Lord will be a time of sacrifice
¨ However, 7 verses later in Zephaniah, he prophesies about the “Day of the Lord” and it is totally different
· *Zephaniah 1:14-18*
¨ Well, come on, which is it!
Ø It is both!!
Ø Zeph 1:7 is predicting the first advent as a time of sacrifice and consecration
§ This is the first advent that Isaiah talks in his 53rd chapter (*Isa 53:4-6)*
· /Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all./
¨ Through Jesus’ sacrifice, we are consecrated!
Ø And John prophesied this when he saw Jesus for the first time and declared…
§ “Behold, the lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world” (John 1:29)
§ Like John, Zephaniah also prophesied about the second advent
· That is what Zeph 1:14-18 is all about
¨ A time of judgment, wrath, darkness and anguish
Ø And that is what John predicts when he states that the winnowing fork is in his hand, etc
Ø So John was given prophecy by God as those before him were
§ A complete picture of God’s redemptive purposes
· Sacrifice (grace) and judgment
v But Jesus goes even a step further than affirming John as a true prophet
Ø Jesus tells the crowd that ‘He is more than a prophet’
§ He not only was a prophet, but was the “Prophet of prophesy”
· The prophet promised in Mal 3:1 which Jesus quotes
¨ The prophet Elijah of Mal 4:5
Ø See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes
v But there is another question in the people’s minds that Jesus wants to address
Ø Namely, questions about…
*John’s Ministry*
v Jesus addresses this through his question found in V. 25
Ø “What did you go out to see?
A man dressed in fine clothes?”
§ The question in people’s minds was…
· If John’s ministry is blessed by God, why doesn’t it look like it
¨ Big and Beautiful
Ø *B2*…that is how the world defines success
Ø But look at John
§ Look at what he wore
· *Mk 1:6*
¨ Clothing made out of camel’s hair, leather belt, ate locust and wild honey
Ø That’s not success!
§ Look at where he preached…
· In the desert
§ Look where he is
· Chained in Herod’s dungeon slated to be executed
§ Look at his ministry
· All but gone, diminished, shrunk
¨ Still had a few disciples, but most left to follow Jesus
v The crowd was looking at John’s ministry and saying…

v So Jesus asks a simple question…
