Ø     A young man called in
§        In College
§        Became Xtian
§        Felt called to go to into missions
§        Parents vehemently against it
§        Young man’s parents gave ultimatum
·        No support, on your own
Ø     Dr.
Laura’s answer…
§        *How important is God’s call to your life?*
·        Are you willing to give up everything?
v    That question rings true in our life as well
Ø     Do we base our life…our actions on other people’s reaction…
§        Or on our call
Ø     How will we respond to the crowds reaction to us
v    Let’s look at how the crowd responds to Jesus
Ø     And then How Jesus responds to the crowd
 
v    Look with me at verse 14-15
v    *READ V. 14-15 ~~ Praise*
Ø     Here is the fame that Satan promised
Ø     Here is the reality that Satan tempted Jesus with in the final temptation in the desert
§        Jesus comes back and immediately begins the ministry that He has been commissioned with
·        Teaching and preaching the Kingdom of God
¨     His fame spread
¨     And people praised Him
 
v    The praise of the crowd can be deceptive
Ø     It can woo you into neglecting your calling
§        Into telling people what they want to hear
·        Prime example of this is Hananiah
¨     Jeremiah 28 ~~ Jeremiah and Hananiah (Yoke, 2 yrs, Babylon)
Ø     As a minister, I can understand this temptation
 
v    And I’m sure that Pastor Joe Wright felt this temptation when asked to open the new session of Kansas Senate last year, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard:
Ø     "Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance.
Ø     We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have done.
We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values.
Ø     We confess that we have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and call it Pluralism.
Ø     We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.
Ø     We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.
Ø     We have killed our unborn and called it choice.
Ø     We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable.
Ø     We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem.
Ø     We have abused power and called it politics.
Ø     We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition.
Ø     We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression.
Ø     We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.
Ø     Search us, Oh, God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free.
Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent to direct us to the center of Your will and to openly ask these things in the name of Your Son, the living Savior, Jesus Christ.
Amen!"
 
v    Can you imaging how difficult this was!
Ø     A great honor to be asked to open state senate
§        This was Pastor Joe Wright’s ticket to the big time
·        Then to pray a Biblically challenging prayer like this one
¨     He put his calling before himself
 
v    And this is a temptation for you as well
Ø     You are called
§        Called to proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior
§        Called to make disciples of every nation
Ø     But when you are in your circle of secular friends…
§        Do you mention Christ by name
§        Do you proclaim that you are a follower of the one and only Lord
§        Do you bow to the pressure of the crowd
v    When the rubber meets the road, what will you say?
Ø     As Dr. Laura put it
§        *How important is God’s call to your life?*
 
v    And Jesus answers this test in our next section of Scripture…
v    *READ V. 16-22 ~~ Questioning*
Ø     Jesus comes back home a local celebrity
§        He is well known
§        He is well liked
·        Praised in all Galilee
¨     A population of 3 MM people
§        He is admired for His teaching ability
·        Eloquent
·        Knowledgeable
·        Confident
§        He was revered for the miracles he had already performed
·        Turning water into wine
·        Healing the lame and blind
 
v    EQ: How easy would it have been to put hard teaching behind him and tickle the ears of the home crowd?
v    But…
Ø     The Sabbath rolls around and Jesus goes to the synagogue *“as was his custom”* the text says
§        Can you imagine how many bad sermons Jesus heard
·        Bad interpretations
·        Wrong applications
¨     Yet he still honored God by going
Ø     Because it is all about God, not us!
§        There is a lesson for us today!
Ø     So when He comes home, He is given the opportunity to preach
§        *Synagogue worship*
·        No one teacher
·        All took turns
Ø     Jesus is given the scroll of Isaiah
Ø     And Jesus turns to Isaiah 61:1-2
§        For two reasons
·        1) To declare who he was…*The Messiah*
Ø     And they question this declaration
¨     Isaiah 61:1-2 is a passage that describes the mission of the Messiah
Ø     To preach the Good news to the Poor *in Spirit*
