Text:           Luke 11:1-4, Jeremiah 31:31-37

1Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” 2So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. 3Give us day by day our daily bread. 4And forgive us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.”

31“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 32not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. 33But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord ,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.” 35Thus says the Lord, Who gives the sun for a light by day, The ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night, Who disturbs the sea, And its waves roar (The Lord of hosts is His name): 36“If those ordinances depart From before Me, says the Lord, Then the seed of Israel shall also cease From being a nation before Me forever.” 37Thus says the Lord: “If heaven above can be measured, And the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel For all that they have done, says the Lord.

• Introduction............................. dominating theme

·   How often have we heard in the news in recent memory…

•   About the failures of high-profile figures?

•   Politicians, businessmen, pastors, televangelists…

•   And how often have we heard those same leaders…

•   Make excuse after excuse to try to explain away their sin…

•   Saying that the situational ethic for them……

•   Didn’t make it a sin…

•   Saying that everyone else is doing it…

•   Therefore it can’t be wrong…

•   Saying that whether they were guilty depended…

•   On what your definition of ‘is’ is…

•   Well, as we consider this petition from the Lord’s prayer…

• 4And forgive us our sins…

•   It should be clear or become clear, that…

•   Our problem is SIN from which we need forgiveness!

• The issue

•   Sin

•   NOT—inappropriate conduct

•   NOT—the naughty things we have done

•   NOT—weakness and frailty – I didn’t mean to…

•   No, the issue that humanity as a whole faces is sin…

•   The willful and knowing transgression…

•   Of the holy law of a holy God…

•   God has set the standard by which men must live…

•   Known as the ten commandments

Exodus 20:3-17

You shall have no other gods before Me—You shall not make for yourself a carved image (an idol)—You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain—Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy—Honor your father and your mother—You shall not murder—You shall not commit adultery—You shall not steal—You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor—You shall not covet anything that is your neighbor’s

•   If @ any time we are out of sync with these…

•   Then we have transgressed God’s law…

•   And have fallen woefully short of his standard…

•   These are the plumb line of human conduct…

•   From which we cannot stray…

•   For we are told… “Do these and you will live…”

•   So sin is the issue…

• The need

•   All have sinned!

Romans 3:23

23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…

•   There are none who can say…

•   that the issue of sin doesn’t apply to them…

1st John 1:8-10

8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

•   There are none who can point to their own righteousness…

•   And say that they have lived up to God’s standard…

Romans 3:10

10As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one

Ecclesiastes 7:20

20For there is not a just man on earth who does good and does not sin.

•   All are helpless

Galatians 3:1-3

1O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified? 2This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?— 3Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?

•   The clear answer to this rhetorical question is…

•   NO!! If yes, why then was Christ portrayed as crucified?

•   How grievous to God was our sin that it required…

•   The death by sacrifice of his one and only Son?

•   Would we come to God and offer him our best?

•   Saying that we aren’t so bad, our sin isn’t so bad…

•   Look, everyone else is doing it…

•   Just because it’s wrong for you…

•   doesn’t make it wrong for me

•   Sin is the issue…

•   And we all have a need to be free from that sin…

•   So we might wonder, is there any hope…

• The hope

•   Our last time together, as we talked about God’s provision…

•   It was said “to ask for things we need requires humility…”

•   We have to acknowledge our need…

•   We have to acknowledge our inability before him…

•   We have to acknowledge that He is the source…

•   When we talk about the issue of our sin it’s no different…

•   To ask for forgiveness requires humility…

•   We must admit that we are wrong…

•   We must agree, confessing that it was wrong

•   Which is the principle meaning of confession

•   To agree with God’s assessment

•   We must acknowledge we need forgiveness

•   We must acknowledge we are helpless

1st John 1:9

9If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

•   The problem

•   How easy is it for you to admit when you are wrong…

•   To walk up to another in the midst of disagreement…

•   And say to them “I am wrong!”

•   How easy is it for a human being to admit they’re wrong?

•   To say to God, “I AM a sinner. I need your grace.”

•   The prideful nature of the human condition is such…

•   That we are loathe to admit we are wrong…

•   Even in the smallest of matters…

•   Let alone in the matter of our SIN

•   Because we are so tangled up in pride…

•   And perhaps we wonder, will I ever be free from myself…

•   Will I ever be free from this burden of sin…

•   Will I ever be free from my passion and pride…

•   Will I ever be able to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation…

•   To prefer the light rather than the darkness…

•   To love the light rather than darkness

•   Will I ever sense I have a Father who loves me…

•   Who wants to adopt me into his family…

•   And call me his own precious possession…

•   Is there any hope for ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

•   The hope

•   Jesus commands that we are to pray, saying…

• 4And forgive us our sins…

•   To give such a command suggests forgiveness is available…

•   That if we ask for forgiveness we will be forgiven…

•   Assuming that we have agreed with the verdict of God…

•   That we are guilty before him and without hope…

•   Apart from his grace and mercy…

•   Would God tell us to ask for forgiveness…

•   If none were forthcoming? If none were available?

•   Sin is the issue, sin creates our need, and there is hope…

•   There is hope because there is a promise…

• The promise

•   Later in this eleventh chapter of Luke we hear Jesus say…

Luke 11:9

9“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

•   And we have already heard the promise of…

1st John 1:9

9If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

•   ask and ye shall receive

•   We are commanded to pray…

• 4And forgive us our sins…

•   Because Almighty God has given us a promise…

•   That when we ask he will forgive…

•   When we approach him humbly and contritely…

•   With hearts broken and head bowed…

•   And say to him…

Luke 18:13

13‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’

•   Then God runs to us from heaven…

•   Wraps his arms around us…

•   Puts a ring on our finger—the finest robe on our shoulders…

•   And throws a huge party in our honor, saying…

Luke 15:24

24for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’

•   And we can know with absolute confidence…

•   That once forgiven for our sin that it is so… forever…

• For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more—If those ordinances depart From before Me, says the Lord, Then the seed of Israel shall also cease From being a nation before Me forever.” 37Thus says the Lord: “If heaven above can be measured, And the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel For all that they have done, says the Lord

•   Sin is the issue—we have a need—there is hope…

•   Because of the promise of Almighty God…
