1Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” 2So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. 3Give us day by day our daily bread. 4And forgive us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.”

• The answer to one of the greatest questions…
• If we are going to speak to God…
• How then should it be done…
• What is the right way…
• Jesus tells the disciples…
• When you pray, say…
• When you come to God this is the way, the pattern…
• This is the model for prayer…
• These are the elements that should be included…
• So, this morning we begin to look…
• @ the specifics of these elements…
• What they mean and how they should be applied…
• Specifically the first line of the prayer…
• Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
• As I consider this text it seems to me that the theme is…
• Knowing God—in intimacy and in holiness—through love.
• Intimacy........................... knowing God as Father
• Our Father in heaven…
• Why not “My?”
Matthew 6:6
6But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
• If we are called on by the Lord to pray “Our Father”
• While we are alone in the secret place…
• Why is it that Jesus here in the “People’s Prayer”
• Instructs us to say… “Our Father”?
• Why not pray “My Father?”
• What is the significance of prayer to “Our Father”?
• First, this is the manner Jesus prayed…
• He always addressed God as Father…
• Second, through Jesus a new relationship is revealed…
• A restoration of the relationship between God and men…
• And if we want to have a part in that relationship…
• We acknowledge that we share in it through Jesus…
• And that we share in it with others…
• Wednesday evening we studied the prayer of Jesus…
• In the seventeenth chapter of the gospel of John…
• Where Jesus said…
John 17:4
4I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.
• And it was said that Jesus glorified the Father…
• By the work that he came and completed…
• Redeeming us from our sin through the cross…
• Later in John 17 Jesus said…
John 17:10
10And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them.
• Jesus glorifies the Father through his work…
• How then do we glorify Jesus?
• By believing and trusting in that work—the cross
• One of the ways of acknowledging our belief and trust…
• Is to begin our prayers to God in the universal way…
• Taught by the Lord Jesus Christ… “Our Father”
• A new relationship—yes this is the God which is in heaven…
• Who consumed the mountain with smoke and fire…
• Who sent by stone tablet the ten commandments…
• Who the people feared, saying to Moses…
Exodus 20:19
‘You speak with us, and we will hear; but don’t let God speak with us, lest we die.’ […] So the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God was.
• But now in this new relationship we are to draw near…
• No longer are we to stand far off…
• No longer are we to fear God as the stern disciplinarian…
• But we are to come to him as a heavenly Father…
• Because in this new relationship God shows to the world…
• His great love for us…
John 3:16
16For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
• Integrity.................................. What’s in a name?
• …Hallowed be Your name.
• Who is the one most interested in protecting your name?
• When you think of the importance of your reputation…
• Who is most likely to defend your name in the world?
• Is it going to be the one who loves you? Is closest to you?
• When I think of myself in my role as a father…
• Who’s most likely to defend my name and reputation…?
• Hopefully it would be my children…
• Those who look to me as Father
• Those who love me—those who know that I love them
• When we think about holding God’s name in high regard…
• Who are those you wouldn’t expect to do it…?
• It is those who don’t know God as Father…
• Who don’t have an intimate and personal relationship…
• Who haven’t experienced that new relationship
• Who haven’t experienced that redemption—salvation
• The one who has experienced his love…
• The one who has experienced his forgiving grace…
• When he comes to him in prayer will also say…
• “Lord, your name is holy—I hold it in high regard!”
• “Holy is your name O Lord!”
• “Blessed by your name O Lord!”
• “your name is set apart O Lord”
• “I consecrate in my heart and mind your name O Lord”
• Out of God’s love for us as expressed through Jesus…
• Where we can approach him as a Father…
• Our of that love is born a love for him as a Father…
• And that love for him as Father engenders in our hearts…
• Respect for him and his name…
• Intensity........................................... love/respect
• Often from that, comes an intensity for the name of God…
• Not unlike the intensity that a little boy would have…
• When one of the neighborhood kids…
• Disrespects the name of his Father…
• Willing to go to the mat to protect his father’s honor…
• You know the old tune…
• My dad is…
• My dad can…
• Not that God needs us to defend him in this world…
• Not that his gospel needs a defense…
• But there’s something within the heart of the believer…
• That like the boy on the playground…
• Comes to the defense of his heavenly Father…
• When he or his gospel is maligned and disrespected…
• Because I love God I respect him, I honor him…
• I hallow and revere his name and call it holy!
• I honor the 3rd commandment…
Exodus 20:7
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
