INTRODUCTION

Last week, we concluded our study in verse 3 of 1 John.
Let’s take a look at those last 2 verses again:
1 John 3:2 ESV
2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.
Leave that verse up
It’s been said that this is the very definition of HOPE (v2).
Now we come to the natural response to that HOPE (v3).
1 John 3:3 ESV
3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
What hope?
The Children of God - those who personally know Jesus and have been changed by Him.
the hope of His soon return.
the hope of seeing and being with Jesus for all eternity!
In order to unpack this “purity” the Bible will weave together several images that are helpful and some pretty strong statements that point us to EVIDENCE that can be examined in the lives of professing Christians.
Our text today will cover SIN, LOST and SAVED people, and the Devil. But the main attraction, the Hero of the text, is none other than the LORD JESUS CHRIST (spoiler: he’s the Hero of all the texts).
Let’s look at our text today. What does this purity look like?
1 John 3:4 ESV
4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.

1. We Know the CRIMINAL SINFULNESS

…or do we?
Lawlessness defined: (anomia - ah-no-meeyah)
a willful rejection of God and His Standards
an active disobedience against God and His standards
these are both characteristics of a child of the devil.
John Stott writes that it is the essence, not the result, of sin.
SIN IS LAWLESSNESS.
I think sometimes we think of sins like getting a parking ticket. Not too big of a deal, but there is a minor consequence.
Maybe you’ve heard me pray, or someone else pray something like this:
God, help me to love what you love and hate what you hate.
So, what does the LORD hate?
Proverbs 6:16–19 ESV
16 There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, 19 a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.
Psalm 11:5 ESV
5 The Lord tests the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.
Matthew 13:41–42 ESV
41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, 42 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Sin is a lot more than, just a violation of some impersonal, arbitrary, heavenly traffic regulation. (Greg Gilbert writes)
It's the breaking of a relationship, and even more, it is a rejection of God, himself – a reputation of God's rule, God's care, God's authority, and God's right to command those to whom he gave life.
In short, it is the rebellion of the creature against the creator.
Charles Spurgeon:
Sin is a thief.
It will rob your soul of its life.
It will rob God of his glory.
Sin is a murderer.
It stabbed our father Adam.
It slew our purity.
Sin is a traitor.
It rebels against the king of heaven and earth.
And John writes we know this…
…we…know…this…
or do we?
PEOPLE WHO KEEP ON SINNING REVEAL SEVERAL THINGS ABOUT THEMSELVES ACCORDING TO OUR TEXT.
They are lawless. (v4)
They do NOT abide in God (Jesus). (v6)
They do NOT know Jesus. (v6)
They have NOT seen Him as Savior and LORD! (v6)
They are deceived if they think they’re right with God while they behave like they love sin. (v7)
They are “of the devil”’s kind - not God’s. (v8, 9)
They have NOT been truly born again. (v9)
The Holy Spirit does NOT reside in them (v9)
They do NOT practice righteousness (10)
They do NOT love the church family. (10)
Sugar coating this won’t help!
Romans 8:8 ESV
8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

Pulpit Pages: New Testament Sermons Seeing Sin for What It Is # 9 (1 John 3:4–10)

Dr. J. Wilbur Chapman used to tell of a Methodist preacher who often spoke on the subject of sin. He minced no words, but defined sin as “that abominable thing that God hates.” A leader in his congregation came to him on one occasion and urged him to cease using the ugly word. “Pastor,” he said, “We wish you would not speak so plainly about sin. Our young people, hearing you, will be more likely to indulge in sin. Call it something else, a “inhibition,” or “error” or a “mistake,” or even “a twist in our nature.”

“I understand what you mean,” the preacher remarked and going to his desk brought out a little bottle. “This bottle,” he said, “contains strychnine. You will see that the red label here reads “Poison.” Would you suggest that I change the label, and paste one on that says, “Wintergreen?” He made his point. You can call sin by other names, but none-the-less, it is still sin.i

This SINNING is in direct opposition to the purity, John just referred to in verse 3.
We know that…don’t we!
We know these verses…
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Sin is criminal. It’s terrible. BUT I HAVE GOOD NEWS!
We know that we have…

2. THE CONQUERING SAVIOR

1 John 3:5 ESV
5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.
He came to take away sins.
Isaiah 53:11–12 ESV
11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.
Hebrews 9:28 ESV
28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.
The seriousness of sin is further underscored by the consideration that Christ appeared so that He might take away our sins.
And in Him is no sin. The Incarnation brought into the world the One who is totally sinless and who had as an objective the removal of sin from the lives of His own (cf. John 1:29; Heb. 9:28a). It follows logically from this that a person who is (“abides”) in a sinless Person must himself be sinless, for he has a sinless, regenerate nature.
1 John 3:8 ESV
8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.
He appeared to destroy the works of the devil.
It was promised in Genesis. When God cursed Satan.
Genesis 3:15 ESV
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
The preacher in Hebrews shows the fulfillment of this by the death of Christ…
Hebrews 2:14 ESV
14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,
He came to take away our sins.
In Him is no sin.
He destroyed the works of the Devil over the lives of those who are His children.
(Follow me here…)
If Christians have had our sins taken away.
If we are joined to the one who has no sin.
If the enemy has no authority over our lives…
Then it is RIGHT TO EXPECT THAT THERE WILL BE A MARKED DIFFERENCE / NIGHT & DAY / DARKNESS & LIGHT / DEATH & LIFE DIFFERENCE IN THE…

3. CONDUCT of the SAVED

1 John 3:7 ESV
7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous.
1 John 3:9–10 ESV
9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.
God’s Word shows us here how being a child of God is incompatible with the practice of sin.
The two simply do not go together.
They are enemies to the death.
Don’t be deceived. (v7)
You will practice righteousness because the one who lives in you IS RIGHTEOUSNESS! (v7)
(v9-10) SINCE you have been born again…born of God
You will NOT practice/increase in sinning.
You will NOT be able to keep on sinning.
You WILL practice/increase in righteousness.
You WILL love/increase in love for your family in Christ.
Because Christ has saved us, we have a new nature.
Because Christ has taken away our sins, we have a new liberty and freedom.
Sin no longer masters us.
Sin is no longer the character and conduct of our lives.
Because we now abide in Christ and in the power of His person and work in the gospel,
we may fall into sin, BUT WE WILL NOT WALK IN SIN!
Sin will not be our habit; it will not be our normal practice.
We no longer love sin; we hate sin.
We no longer delight in sin; We despise sin.
Let’s make it personal! Brother Akin wrote this as a confessional:
Because Christ has saved me, I have a new nature.
Because Christ has taken away my sins, I have a new liberty and freedom.
Sin no longer masters me.
Sin is no longer the character and conduct of my life.
Because I now abide in Christ and in the power of His person and work in the gospel,
I may fall into sin, BUT I WILL NOT WALK IN SIN!
Sin will not be my habit or normal practice.
I no longer love sin; I hate sin.
I no longer delight in sin; I despise sin.
John Stott characterized it this way:
If Christ appeared to “take away our sins” AND to “destroy the devil’s work,”
AND if, when he appears a second time, “we shall see him” and “we shall be like him,”
SLIDE
how can we possibly go on living in sin?
To do so would be to deny the purpose of both his “appearings.” (The Letters of John, 132–33)
Why is our conduct different? Because we have been MADE NEW!
Salvation is a work of God’s grace:
where believers become new creatures in the LORD Jesus Christ.
It is a change of heart brought about by the Holy Spirit through conviction of sin,
where the sinner responds in repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Repentance and faith are inseparable experiences of grace.
Repentance is a genuine turning from sin toward God.
Faith is the acceptance of Jesus Christ and commitment of our whole lives to Him as Lord and Savior!
Beloved, don’t be fooled…there is NO NATURAL POWER OF WILL THAT CAN OVERCOME SATAN AND SIN!
It is the work of Christ alone for us…in us…through us…for the praise of HIS GLORY!

CONCLUSION

One Preacher notes there appear to be 4 groups of people that John is addressing in these epistles. They are:
(1) fully assured Christians;
(2) Christians struggling with assurance;
(3) falsely assured non-Christians; and
(4) known non-Christians
While this passage is for all of us, it would appear that the Holy Spirit may have inspired John to have the third group in his sights here - “falsely assured non-Christians”.
His goal is to shock them and wake them up to their true spiritual status.
Dear friend, CHILDREN OF GOD KNOW SOME THINGS because we are a people of the book!
Children of God KNOW the seriousness…that SIN IS A CRIMINAL OFFENSE OF THE HIGHEST ORDER!
Children of God KNOW that Jesus is not just some helper of people…HE IS THE CONQUERING SAVIOR!
Children of God KNOW that the our CONDUCT is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than those who are practicing and continuing in sin.
