Man’s original position and two trees (Lesson 15) 5/14/2024

Introduction:

The fall (Gen3:1-24) Summarize it
Crafty serpent (v.1)
Deceived Eve (vv.2-5)
Eve considers the serpent, takes, eats and gives to her husband who was with her (v.6)
Then there were the after effects
Trying to hide from God (vv.8-10)
There is the talk and consequences from God (vv.11-24)
There is sufficient evidence that the fall is a historical event (Ref: Mt19:1ff; turn to 1Cor15:22)
Jesus, Luke and Paul all regard the fall as a historical event.

Aim:

To examine the historical narrative of the fall
To note what the fall was not and what it was.

Outline:

A. What the fall is not
It was not a “feeling”
It was not an “allegory or a figure.”
It was not a “slip in an upward Evolvement”
Note: The Genesis record and the New Testament documents are a definite refutation to any evolutionary hypothesis.
4. It was not “a circumstance of heredity or environment.”
B. What the fall was (turn to read Gen3:1-8)
Genesis 3:1–8 NASB95
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’ ” 4 The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! 5 “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings. 8 They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
A rebellious, selfish act against God
A choice that’s end result was rejecting God (turn to read 1Jn2:15-17)
1 John 2:15–17 NASB95
15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.
You see Eve’s lone conversation with the serpant (vv.2-3)
Eve listened to the deceiver (vv.2-3)
Eve loosened her hold on God (v.3)
Eve looked at the forbidden fruit (v.6)
Eve longed for the forbidden fruit (v.6)
Eve lured Adam to partake with her (v.6)
Note: Eve did not properly use what God said,
(v.3) she adds “neither shall you touch.”
(v.3) she changes you will surely die (2:17) and says you will die
(v.3) she takes out the emphatic statement “surely” to changed to “will.”
Another point to add in what it is:
This sinful violation ended in the separation from God: Man falls
The will of God was resisted
The word of God was Rejected.
The way of God was refused .
In a world that God looked and said was “very good” the presence of evil and misery has entered.
We then see the universality of sin and the consequences (Rom6:23)
We also see the mystery of death (turn to 1Cor15:22, Rom5:12; ref only 2Tim1:10)
1 Corinthians 15:22 NASB95
22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.
again that was a reminder
Romans 5:12 NASB95
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—
Conclusion:
The fall had consequences (turn to 1Jn3:4: ref Rom5:14)
1 John 3:4 NASB95
4 Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.
and
Romans 5:14 NASB95
14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
For there could be no fall without a standard (knowledge) for living, they were given the standard the criteria and they did not keep it
A law was given to may for there could be no fall without the law for there was no knowledge of sin.
Man’s fall was brought on by man’s own choice. It was deliberate, it was selfish, it had consequences and separated man from God.
