Review

Turn to 2 Corinthians 1:21-22.
Paul illustrated the permanence of the Spirit’s indwelling by asserting that you as a believer are the temple of God. Christians don’t go to a place to be in God’s presence. Rather, God’s presence goes where they go. Since your body is the temple of God, you should bring glory and honor to God, just as Solomon’s temple did in Jerusalem.

Message

This evening we’re going to finish our Bible study on this subject by looking at what happens when the Spirit indwells a new Christian.
When you trust in Christ as your Savior, the Spirit indwells you, and…

You are immediately purchased and possessed
Read 2 Corinthians 1:21-22; 2 Corinthians 5:5; Ephesians 1:13-14.

Earnest: a downpayment
money which in purchases is given as a pledge that the full amount will subsequently be paid” - Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon
If a person goes and buys a house at an auction, typically they require a set amount to be paid as a downpayment. Payment can be made in cash or with a certified check. That payment is made in advance as a commitment towards paying the full amount when the transaction is finalized.
According to verse 21, who has established us in Christ, and anointed us, and sealed us, and made the downpayment? God
According to verse 22, what is the downpayment that God makes when a person believes in Christ? The Spirit
The principal idea of earnest is a pledge or guarantee of a future closed transaction. In human affairs the terms "earnest money" or "down payment" are used showing good faith to finish the deal. Likewise, the presence of the Holy Spirit in the believer's life is the down payment as the guarantee on the part of God that the believer will receive all the promised future blessings of salvation. - Pastor Frank Camp, Pneumatology Class Notes, pages 16-17.

Ephesians 1:14 KJV 1900
Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
The Holy Spirit is God’s downpayment or pledge that He will fulfill His promised blessings towards us!
Application: What are some of the promised future blessings of salvation?
Resurrection from the dead - death is not the end of the road for the Christian!
Romans 8:11 KJV 1900
But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Permanent residence with the Lord in Heaven - right now, God permanently dwells with us. One day, we will go and permanently dwell with Him.
You can be certain: God made a downpayment to you, so He will keep His promises. You will one day receive a new body and a new home with the Lord.

Sealed: to set a mark upon, to stamp
Read 2 Corinthians 1:21-22; Ephesians 1:13.
Because God has made a downpayment on you, He has also possessed you. In other words, He claims ownership of you. Can anyone else claim ownership of you? Can anyone else break God’s seal? No. So can Satan steal your salvation or keep God from fulfilling His promises towards you? No.
Application: You are secure as a Christian. The Holy Spirit indwelling you is like a spiritual marker of God’s ownership and of God’s authority. All angels and demons can see that you have been marked by the Holy Spirit. He indwells you. You cannot be possessed by any other. Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. Be of good cheer, Jesus said, “I have overcome the world.”
There’s a few other verses that mention the reality of the Spirit dwelling in us:

That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.

James 4:5 KJV 1900
Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

1 John 2:27 KJV 1900
But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
