During his 1933 Inaugural Address, President Franklin Roosevelt sought to calm a troubled America in the throes of depression by saying,
“There is nothing to fear but fear itself.”
Fear is a feeling of dread, alarm, panic and anxiety.
Fear ranges from mild anxiety to panic attacks.
The Psychiatric Association has categorized a variety of phobias, such as acrophobia, claustrophobia, agoraphobia.

Research indicates that we are born with only two fears—the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises.
All other fears are learned responses.
.......
Fear takes on many forms—the fear of success, the fear of failure, the fear of rejection, the fear of disease, the fear of the future, the fear of life after death. Jesus described the last days as times of intense, worldwide fear.
.......
Fear produces negative effects.
Fear paralyzes decision making, immobilizes action, hinders prayer, limits faith, restricts relationships, lowers productivity, jeopardizes health, stifles joy.

Because of fear...
Adam and Eve hid from God in the Garden.
.......
Because of fear...
Israel forfeited Canaan.
.......
Because of fear...
Saul's army fled from Goliath.
.......
Because of fear...
Gideon lost 22,000 of 32,000 fighting men.
.......
Because of fear...
Elijah suffered depression.
.......
Because of fear...
Jonah ran from the call of God.
.......
Because of fear...
The man with one talent buried it in the ground.
.......
Because of fear...
Christ's disciples cried out, “Master, do You not care that we perish?”
.......
Because of fear...
Christ's disciples deserted Him at the cross.
.......
In a world of fear, God speaks:
“fear not; only believe!”
This was Christ's message to Jairus—“Fear not; only believe!”

These are truly words every believer must live by...
“Fear not; only believe!”
.......
So, please turn your Bibles to the Gospel of Luke.
We will conduct our study in Chapter 8 and focus on verses 40 through 56.
Our message this morning is titled, “Jesus Heals & Restores Life”
.......
This message today will focus on Jesus’ power and authority over sickness and the human body in one instance...
And in another instance we will witness Jesus power and authority over death...
With a Lord and Savior like that, we truly have no reason to fear.

So, this morning we will cover three main points:
1) The Request...
2) The Touch...
And...
3) The Miracle.

Before we consider our text, please join me in prayer...

Heavenly Father...
You are perfect in every way...
And You are truly a Good Father.
.......
Thank You for Your mercy and grace...
Thank You for always walking with Your children.
.......
You have sent Your Son to save the lost...
And His life was a life of obedience that You accepted...
And His death was an act of love for His sheep and an act of obedience to You...
Thank You for sending Your one and only Son!

And it is in Jesus’s name we pray all these things...

Let’s turn to our text for today:

40 Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him.
41 And there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at Jesus’ feet, he implored him to come to his house,
42 for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As Jesus went, the people pressed around him.
43 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone.
44 She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased.
45 And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!”
46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that power has gone out from me.”
47 And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed.
48 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”
49 While he was still speaking, someone from the ruler’s house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more.”
50 But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.”
51 And when he came to the house, he allowed no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child.
52 And all were weeping and mourning for her, but he said, “Do not weep, for she is not dead but sleeping.”
53 And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.
54 But taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, arise.”
55 And her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given her to eat.
56 And her parents were amazed, but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.
So, let’s look at our first point...
1) The Request

Verses 40-42(a): Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. And there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at Jesus’ feet, he implored him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.
Last Sunday we covered Jesus’ journey into the Gentile country of the Gerasenes...
There our Lord and Savior cast out thousands of demons from two manics...
One of which who became a missionary to his home town.

Now, Jesus has returned to the land of the Jews.
.......
After being rebuffed by the Gentiles across the Sea of Galilee, Jesus returns to be welcomed by an expectant crowd...
As pastor John MacArthur says:
“Among those anxiously waiting for Jesus to return and resume His healing ministry were two very contrasting souls.
One was a man, the other was a woman.
One was rich, the other poor.
One was a respected leader of society, the other a rejected outcast.
But each had a desperate need that only Jesus could meet.”

So, let’s take a look a the first individual of our passage...
Let’s take a look at how Jesus is now confronted with the need of a leader of the synagogue.
.......
Jairus was the “ruler of the synagogue” which means he was an eminent layman whose responsibilities included conducting meetings, caring for the building, and supervising the teaching in the synagogue...
Furthermore, the ruler of the synagogue who would arrange the service, choosing those who would read Scripture or lead in prayer...
And most of them were Pharisees...
So, someone like Jairus would be very highly respected in his Jewish community...
In fact, the very synagogue that Jairus is responsible for is the same one we encountered earlier in our study back in Luke 4:33-37 which says:
33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,
34 “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”
35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm.
36 And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!”
37 And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.
So, Jairus was likely an eye witness of Jesus casting out a demon at his synagogue...
Along with the reputation that Jesus was gathering in the area it is clear that he saw Him as doing God’s will...
For Christ has displayed great power and authority.
.......
So, when Jairus sees that his child is dying he knows where he must turn...
He know that he must seek out Christ.
.......
It is at this point in our passage that Luke records that Jairus “implored [Jesus] to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.”

Now, when Jairus says his child is his only daughter...
The English translation may led some to believe that he could possible have some sons too...
Yet, the Greek text implies that his daughter was Jairus’ only child and heir, not merely his only daughter...

Furthermore, her age of twelve is another key fact that Luke shares with us...
For this points out that in Jewish society she was about to become a young lady of marriageable age...
So, this further heightens and intensifies the man’s distress.

What will Jesus do?
Let’s move on to our next point to see.
2) The Touch
2) The Touch
Verses 42(b)-48: As Jesus went, the people pressed around him. And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone. She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased. And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!” But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that power has gone out from me.” And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”
Jesus responded to Jairus’s urgent request by agreeing to go with him to his house and help his dying daughter...
And as Jesus is walking to Jairus’s home the large crowd is pressing all around our Lord and Savior...
In fact, the term “pressed” literally means “choked” and provides an image of a crowd that almost crushed Jesus.

As if this situation was not stressful enough...
A situation occurs that stops the progress of Jesus to get to Jairus’s home.
.......
Beloved, imagine that your child is dying...
Imagine that Jesus is your last hope...
And you finally got a chance to speak to Him...
And He has agreed to come see your dying child...
But now everyone has halted in their tracks...
What must have been going on in the mind of Jairus?
What would be going on in our mind?
.......
Imagine your dying child is being rushed by ambulance to the ER...
And all of a sudden the ambulance just stops.
.......
This is what Jairus is going through right now...
The fear of losing his one and only daughter...
His precious child that hasn’t had a chance to really live out her life...
Fear was knocking on his door...
But is Jesus agreed to help...
Then there is truly nothing that needs to be feared.
.......
So, let’s pause Jairus’s story and see what has caused this interruption...
And let’s take a look at what the Gospel of Mark records regarding this parallel event to our passage...
Let’s look at what it says in Mark 5:25-29:
25 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years,
26 and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse.
27 She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment.
28 For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.”
29 And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.
So, it is clear that there is another individual that is in great need...
And this is the second person that our passage will focus on.

Beloved, I would like to point out something about this women...
The Gospel writers make it clear that she has been suffering for twelve years...
That is the same amount of time that Jairus’s daughter has been alive...
That is a long time to suffer!
.......
Now, the “flow of blood” or “discharge of blood” is also know as a “hemorrhage.”
Medically speaking, she was probably experiencing a gynecological problem or uterine hemorrhaging...
As we mentioned, her plight would have been heightened by its twelve year duration and that would have left her hopeless and in an anemic and weakened condition...
Her condition was so bad that Luke, a physician himself, notes that no doctors were able to heal her...
In fact, her condition only got worse!

But that is not all, Beloved...
To put her aliment into perspective...
We need to consider her social status at this time...
We need to understand that this woman’s affliction not only was serious physically but also left her permanently unclean for ceremonial reasons
Just look at what it says in Leviticus 15:25–27:
25 “If a woman has a discharge of blood for many days, not at the time of her menstrual impurity, or if she has a discharge beyond the time of her impurity, all the days of the discharge she shall continue in uncleanness. As in the days of her impurity, she shall be unclean.
26 Every bed on which she lies, all the days of her discharge, shall be to her as the bed of her impurity. And everything on which she sits shall be unclean, as in the uncleanness of her menstrual impurity.
27 And whoever touches these things shall be unclean, and shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water and be unclean until the evening.
So, this meant she would have been shunned by all, including her own family, and excluded from both synagogue and temple...
That means she would not be permitted to enter the temple section reserved for women...
And she would not be permitted to be in public without making people aware that she is unclean.

Because of this fact...
Her touching anyone would normally render them unclean...
However, when she touched Jesus the effect here was precisely the opposite!
.......
The women touching the “fringe of his garment” may refer to the edge of His garment or more likely the four tassels that hung from the edge of the garment, two in front and two behind, as a reminder of God’s commands...
That command is found in Numbers 15:37–40 which says:
37 The Lord said to Moses,
38 “Speak to the people of Israel, and tell them to make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a cord of blue on the tassel of each corner.
39 And it shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the Lord, to do them, not to follow after your own heart and your own eyes, which you are inclined to whore after.
40 So you shall remember and do all my commandments, and be holy to your God.

Regarding the phrase, “and immediately her discharge of blood ceased” the New American Commentary on Luke says:
“The ‘immediately’ heightens Jesus’ miracle-working power.
His power and might is such that a twelve-year sickness, which no one else could heal, was instantaneously healed.”

Beloved, notice that Jesus asks who touched Him...
This was not a question out of ignorance...
Jesus knew who touched Him but the woman’s cure needs to be known publicly in order for her to be taken back into normal social life...
So, Jesus is careful to arrange this in a loving and compassionate way...
Even referring to the woman as “daughter” which is a tender statement.
In fact, this is the only time in the Gospels that Jesus used that word to address a woman...
Furthermore, the Lord’s calling her daughter indicates that He received her as a child of His kingdom...
So, she was restored, physically, socially, and spiritually through the grace and personal power of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Fear plays a factor in this indecent, too...
Luke records that “when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed.”
She was filled with fear...
Possibly not knowing how Jesus would react to being touched due to her being unclean...
But as we said Jesus reassured her by calling her “daughter.”

Additionally, we see that Jesus is not interested in those who will just “keep their religion to themselves.”
No Christian can faithfully “keep their faith private.”
.......
We are called to share our testimony!
We are called to share what Christ has done in our lives!
.......
So, our Lord led this women to overcome her fears and boldly share what God did in her life...
And the woman who touched Jesus and initially hoped for a physical cure, truly received a deeper, saving wholeness through Jesus.
.......
Now, before we move on to our next point I would like to clarify something...
It should be noted that when Jesus says, “Power has gone out from me” it does not mean that Jesus’ power was thereby diminished, as though it were a consumable commodity...
Jesus’ power was unlimited!
.......
The reality is that Jesus’ power came directly from the Holy Spirit as it says in Acts 10:38:
38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
And when Jesus performed a miracle it was normal for power to come out of Him as it says in Luke 6:19:
19 And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them all.

Now, that we have covered this detour on the journey to Jairus’s home we have to ask...
What is the status with Jairus’s daughter?

Let’s take a look at our third and final point to answer that question.
3) The Miracle

Verses 49-56: While he was still speaking, someone from the ruler’s house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more.” But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.” And when he came to the house, he allowed no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and mourning for her, but he said, “Do not weep, for she is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, arise.” And her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed, but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.
This delay that we covered in our last point brought upon Jairus’s worst fear...
His daughter had died.
Even people from his house imagined that it was too late now...
Telling Jairus to not trouble Jesus anymore.
.......
If this passage ended at verse 49 it would be a sad story...
But I want you to look at the first two words of verse 50...

What does it say, Church?
.......
Beloved what does it say?
.......
“But Jesus...”
.......
Those are two words that should crush any and all our fears!
.......
Do you have a fear of death?
Remember...
“But Jesus...”
.......
Do you have a fear of those in power in this world?
Remember...
“But Jesus...”
.......
Do you have a fear of Satan and his demons and the power of sin?
Remember...
“But Jesus...”
.......
Do you have a fear of natural disasters?
Remember...
“But Jesus...”
.......
Do you have a fear of anything in all of creation?
Remember...
“But Jesus...”
.......
If you are in Christ then nothing can separate you from His love and His promises...
As Romans 8:38-39 says:
38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers,
39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
And as 1 Corinthians 1:9 says:
9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Now, upon hearing the discussion between Jairus and those from his house Jesus said to Jairus , “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.”
So, the journey continues to Jairus’s home...
When they arrive the people are already mourning and are preparing to have a funeral.
.......
Now, the use of the term “mourning” literally refers to the beating of one’s breast in mourning...
This is applied to this group which would have been relatives, friends, and official hired mourners...
These hired mourners would be loudly screaming, wailing, and tearing their clothes...
Additionally, some would be playing dissonant music on high-pitched flutes as Matthew 9:23 records:
23 And when Jesus came to the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion,
Since Jairus was a well-respected leader in the community, the funeral for his daughter would have been even larger and louder than most.

Next, Jesus shocks the crowd by saying, “Do not weep, for she is not dead but sleeping.”
This was meet with laughter!
.......
You see Beloved, the phrase, “and they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead” was Luke making clear that the girl was in fact dead...
The mourners knew the girl was dead and thus laughed at Jesus because they believed He was using the term “asleep” in ignorance of the fact...
But, the reality is that He was using the term as a metaphor...
As the MacArthur New Testament Commentary on Luke says:
“Jesus’ declaration that the girl had not died, but was asleep brought a revolutionary new perspective to death.
By likening it to sleep, He redefined death as temporary; thus sleep is used in Scripture as a metaphor for the body in death.
But while the body sleeps temporarily in death, the soul does not.”

Jesus then clears out the room and only brings with him a select few individuals to witness an extraordinary event...
As Luke records, “[Jesus] allowed no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child.”
.......
Now this is the first time in Luke’s Gospel that Jesus’ inner circle of closest disciples were mentioned separate from the other disciples...
And that inner circle consisted of Peter, John, and James...
.......
As we will see later in the Gospel accounts this same group is seen alone together with Jesus...
Examples of this include Matthew 17:1–2 which says:
1 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.
Additionally, look with me at Matthew 26:36–37 which says:
36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.”
37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled.
.......
Now, with this private group, Jesus took Jairus’s daughter’s hand and said, “Child, arise” and then “her spirit returned, and she got up at once.”
Look with me too at Mark 5:41-42 which records the Jesus’ words in Aramaic and reveals that the child also began walking immediately...
Those verse say:
41 Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.”
42 And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement.
.......
Now, touching a dead body would normally leave a person ceremonially unclean...
Yet, when Jesus touched the girl the effect here was precisely the opposite, again!
.......
We have already seen in our passage how the women with the bleeding and who was ceremonially unclean could not pollute Jesus...
But He cleansed her...
And back in Luke 7:13–16 we witnessed that Jesus is the source that cleanses and cannot be made unclean...
That passage says:
13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.”
14 Then he came up and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”
15 And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.
16 Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and “God has visited his people!”
So, Jesus touching the bier would constitute a ceremonially defiling act...
Yet, Jesus graphically illustrated how impervious He was to such defilements!
When He touched the coffin, its defilement did not taint Him!
Instead, His power immediately dispelled the presence of all death and defilement!

Likewise, Jesus is the very source of life and can raise the dead...
Even if the body has already started to decompose...
Just look with me at John 11:38–44 which says:
38 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it.
39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.”
40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?”
41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me.
42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.”
43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.”
44 The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

Finally, when Luke records that Jesus “charged them to tell no one” we see that it is a sharp contrast to what occured in Luke 8:39 which says:
39 “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.
The reason for this is that Jesus had spoken this command to a Gentile in a Gentile community...
However, Jesus is now back in a Jewish region where mistaken expectations about a political and revolutionary messiah could make Jesus’ ministry much more difficult.

Now, I love how the Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament on Luke summaries no just this passage we have studied today but the also the previous passages we studied a few weeks back:
“The combined miracles of Luke 8:22–56 attest to Jesus’ power over a variety of forces, whether they be forces from without (nature or demons) or within (disease or death).
Here, Jesus is able to heal disease.
But when one considers the woman’s action, an additional note is made:
Faith, even timid faith, has importance and can mobilize God.
This woman was careful not to draw attention to herself, but she also knew that Jesus could heal her.
Her faith was more important than her timidity.
She eventually relied on him.
When confronted and exposed, she openly spoke of what Jesus had done for her.

More interesting is Jairus’s perspective.
Imagine the faith that he was called on to have.
He hoped that Jesus could do something.
However, the interruption and delay had seemingly caused all to be lost.
Yet, Jesus still called on Jairus to trust.
The timing may not have been what Jairus desired, but events were still in God’s control through his agent.
Others may have thought all was lost—and by all appearances they were.
Nevertheless, Jesus had—and has—the authority to reverse appearances and to render the delay meaningless.
Several issues stand out in the Jairus account:
Jesus’ power, faith’s importance, and the patience of the one who is called to trust in God.
God will do his work in his time.
One can be amazed at how God works and the timing that he uses.
Jesus’ power eventually honors Jairus’s patient faith.

In fact, when one considers the four miracles of Luke 8:22–56, it is Jesus’ comprehensive power that stands out.
This power provides the opportunity for people to see God.
Such power exposes the impotency of the forces that oppose God and humanity.
The forces may be natural, demonic, disease, or death; yet Jesus is able to reverse them all.
The last miracle of resurrection properly comes at the end, for if Jesus has power over death, then one eventually must deal with him and with God.
The call in three of these miracles relates to faith.
Jesus is worthy of one’s trust.
Be assured that what he promises, he eventually will do.
Know that God’s power is absolute.
Death is not the chief end of humans.
Facing and knowing God is.”

So, as this message comes to a close...
I would like to share this that I came across in my study this week:
A little boy and his father were driving down a country road on a beautiful spring afternoon.
Suddenly out of nowhere a bumblebee flew in the car window.
Since the little boy was deathly allergic to bee stings he became petrified.
His father quickly reached out, grabbed the bee, squeezed it in his hand, and then released it.
But as soon as he let it go, the young son became frantic once again as it buzzed by the little boy.
.......
The father sensed his son’s terror.
Once again he reached out his hand, but this time he pointed to this hand.
There, stuck in his skin was the stinger of the bee.
“You see this?” he asked.
“You don’t need to be afraid anymore.
I’ve taken the sting for you.”
.......
The Christian does not need to be afraid of death because Christ has taken the sting out of death and sin.
.......
As 1 Corinthians 15:55-56 says:
55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

Heavenly Father...
If anyone hearing this message right now does not know You in a saving way...
Open their eyes to see that Your Son is the true source of eternal life.

Guide them to see Jesus’ power and authority over the natural realm...
Guide them to see Jesus’ power and authority over the spiritual realm...
Guide them to see Jesus’ power and authority over sickness...
