Introduction

Open this evening to Zech 5, we will read all 11 verses. Zech 5:1-11
I wanted to stop here in our journey through Zechariah
Its a bastardized text
It show how important is it to keep the consistent hermeneutic.
Explain consistent hermeneutic.
Not one Genre
Redemption through Jesus provide that consistent hermeneutic.
How does this text lead me, lead us, back to Christ and what he did.
Take the time to practice, as we read.
How does this lead me to Christ
If you are ABLE, Please stand for the Reading for Gods Word.
Zechariah 5:1–11 ESV
1 Again I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, a flying scroll! 2 And he said to me, “What do you see?” I answered, “I see a flying scroll. Its length is twenty cubits, and its width ten cubits.” 3 Then he said to me, “This is the curse that goes out over the face of the whole land. For everyone who steals shall be cleaned out according to what is on one side, and everyone who swears falsely shall be cleaned out according to what is on the other side. 4 I will send it out, declares the Lord of hosts, and it shall enter the house of the thief, and the house of him who swears falsely by my name. And it shall remain in his house and consume it, both timber and stones.” 5 Then the angel who talked with me came forward and said to me, “Lift your eyes and see what this is that is going out.” 6 And I said, “What is it?” He said, “This is the basket that is going out.” And he said, “This is their iniquity in all the land.” 7 And behold, the leaden cover was lifted, and there was a woman sitting in the basket! 8 And he said, “This is Wickedness.” And he thrust her back into the basket, and thrust down the leaden weight on its opening. 9 Then I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, two women coming forward! The wind was in their wings. They had wings like the wings of a stork, and they lifted up the basket between earth and heaven. 10 Then I said to the angel who talked with me, “Where are they taking the basket?” 11 He said to me, “To the land of Shinar, to build a house for it. And when this is prepared, they will set the basket down there on its base.”
May God Bless the Reading of His Holy, Infallible, and Sufficient Word

What does a flying scroll have to do with my salvation in Christ.
that’s the right question.

A Vision of a Flying Scroll

Zechariah 5:5–11 ESV
5 Then the angel who talked with me came forward and said to me, “Lift your eyes and see what this is that is going out.” 6 And I said, “What is it?” He said, “This is the basket that is going out.” And he said, “This is their iniquity in all the land.” 7 And behold, the leaden cover was lifted, and there was a woman sitting in the basket!
What does a flying scroll have to do with my salvation in Christ.
that’s the right question.
The Lord lets us know what we need to know and it is very important not to go beyond the text.
That is a very human thing to do.
Its not a nuclear missile.
What is it, its what God said it is, it is the curse,
The Scroll of the Law
The Law Contains the curse
“For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” (Ga 3:10, ESV)
We covered the curses and the blessing in the Law back in Deuteronomy
Deuteronomy 28:1–68
“ And the LORD will single him out from all the tribes of Israel for calamity, in accordance with all the curses of the covenant written in this Book of the Law.” (Dt 29:21, ESV)
No one escapes the Laws condemnation
“This is the curse that goes out over the face of the whole land”
“Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more.” (Ro 5:20, ESV)
Especially this that were given the Law.
Calvin said, “The angel then says, that it was the curse which went forth over the face of the whole land. We must remember what I have just said, that God’s judgment is here set forth before the Jews, that they might know how justly both their fathers and themselves have been with so much severity chastised by God, inasmuch as they had procured for themselves such punishments by their sins.” [1]
The justice of God, the curse that comes on all those that break his law is all consuming.
“house of the thief, and the house of him who swears falsely”
External and internal
Break one break them all
Exodus 15:26 ESV
26 saying, “If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, your healer.”
Leviticus 20:22 ESV
22 “You shall therefore keep all my statutes and all my rules and do them, that the land where I am bringing you to live may not vomit you out.
Deuteronomy 5:29 ESV
29 Oh that they had such a heart as this always, to fear me and to keep all my commandments, that it might go well with them and with their descendants forever!
Deuteronomy 19:9 ESV
9 provided you are careful to keep all this commandment, which I command you today, by loving the Lord your God and by walking ever in his ways—then you shall add three other cities to these three,
Deuteronomy 26:18 ESV
18 And the Lord has declared today that you are a people for his treasured possession, as he has promised you, and that you are to keep all his commandments,
Deuteronomy 30:8 ESV
8 And you shall again obey the voice of the Lord and keep all his commandments that I command you today.
1 Kings 6:12 ESV
12 “Concerning this house that you are building, if you will walk in my statutes and obey my rules and keep all my commandments and walk in them, then I will establish my word with you, which I spoke to David your father.
James 2:10 ESV
10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.
So it doesn't mater if the law was broken externally, by theft, or internally, by false swearing, the curses found in the Law are coming after you.
I was reading an article today, from MSN, about Idaho which has the closest thing to a law abolishing abortion in the country and how the Biden administration is sewing Idaho and the case in the before the supreme court. In the article was a photo of hundreds of women
There are two reactions
Anger
100,000,000+ murdered in the womb while we have stood by.
Sorrow
Do you understand the burning wrath of almighty God the awaits every one in the crowed that will not repent?
Who can sand?
As they lobby to be allowed to murder their children they are blinded by sin, they are full of iniquity, fully of hatred for God.
You cannot stand.
There but for the grace of God found only in Jesus Christ go you.
“I will send it out, declares the Lord of hosts, and it shall enter the house of the thief, and the house of him who swears falsely by my name. And it shall remain in his house and consume it, both timber and stones.”
Elijah called down the fire of God and iut burnt up the water and the offering and even the stones of the alter (Kings 18:42-46, ESV)
When Isreal saw it they followed Elijah and killed 400 priest of Baal because they saw that the LORD is a consuming fire.
“Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, 29 for our God is a consuming fire.” (Heb 12:28–29, ESV)
If God is a consuming fire and the cures consumes all that break the law and we have broken the Law, for what are we to be grateful and how will we Law Breakers “receive[] a kingdom that cannot be shaken”
Christ Christ Christ Christ
There is no kingdom without him
There is not redemption without him
There is not hope without him
And that truth is central to every proper understanding of scripture

Transition

You never see the Lord leaving the Elect without hope. I wanted to go over the verse 5-11 quickly to again show the importance of keeping to what the text says and interpreting the text with Christ at the center.

A Vision of a Woman in a Basket

Zechariah 5:5–11 ESV
5 Then the angel who talked with me came forward and said to me, “Lift your eyes and see what this is that is going out.” 6 And I said, “What is it?” He said, “This is the basket that is going out.” And he said, “This is their iniquity in all the land.” 7 And behold, the leaden cover was lifted, and there was a woman sitting in the basket!
Terrible interpretations
Women are more evil than men,
Gospel of Thomas
Matthew Henry
“The woman sitting in the midst of the ephah represents the sinful church and nation of the Jews, in their latter and corrupt age. Guilt is upon the sinner as a weight of lead, to sink him to the lowest hell. This seems to mean the condemnation of the Jews, after they filled the measure of their iniquities by crucifying Christ and rejecting his gospel.” (Zec 5:5, ESV)
But the text tell us what this woman represents.
It does not say this the Jews, or this is that people, it says. “This is Wickedness.”
Evil is often depicted in the scriptures as a temptress.
“Why should you be intoxicated, my son, with a forbidden woman and embrace the bosom of an adulteress?” (Pr 5:20, ESV)
Evil, wickedness in tempting.
Leaden weight.
The whight of sin carried off.
