1. Intro

a. Looking at the life of Joash, King of Judah. AKA Jehoash

b. 2 Kings 11-12 and 2 Chron 22:10-24:27

2. The Life of Joash

a. Son of Ahaziah, King of Judah. His grandmother, Athaliah is from Israel, daughter of Ahab.
b. Athaliah has the entire royal family killed after her son, Amaziah is killed. Joash is rescued by his aunt, Jehosheba, wife of Jehoiada, and hidden in the Temple for six years. Athaliah usurps the throne.
c. Jehoiada orchestrates the coronation of Joash when he is 7 and orders Athaliah killed. The Davidic throne is restored. Joash rules 40 years.
d. While Jehoiada lives, Joash does what is right in the eyes of God. Joash restores the temple and temple worship. The temple of Baal is destroyed and its priest executed.
e. Jehoiada dies and others gain influence in the life of Joash. Joash leads Judah in abandoning God and goes into idolatry.
f. God sends prophets to confront Joash. Finally, God sends Zechariah, son of Jehoiada. Joash has him killed.
g. The Arameans attack with a small force, much smaller than Judah’s army, and defeat Judah. Joash is wounded and later assassinated by two of his officials in his own bed in judgement of how he killed Zechariah.

a. With Godly influences, things go well.

17 After the death of Jehoiada, the officials of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and he listened to them. 18 They abandoned the temple of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, and worshiped Asherah poles and idols. Because of their guilt, God’s anger came on Judah and Jerusalem. 19 Although the Lord sent prophets to the people to bring them back to him, and though they testified against them, they would not listen.

4. Obedience or Judgement

2 Chronicles 24:24 NIV
24 Although the Aramean army had come with only a few men, the Lord delivered into their hands a much larger army. Because Judah had forsaken the Lord, the God of their ancestors, judgment was executed on Joash.
b. Historically, Israel’s smaller army beat the larger armies.

c. When we disobey God, there are consequences.

d. Jesus is the ultimate judge.

5. Conclusion

a. We need to be wise in who we listen to.

b. We need to have Godly influences in our lives.

c. We are called to obey our King. Our disobedience has consequences.
