Handout
Last week we were in Habakkuk 3 and saw Habakkuk write a song of praise and trust in God as he looked back on the Israelites’ Exodus out of Egypt. Tonight we are going to pick up in 1 Corinthians and see Paul look back on those same events and use them as a warning for the believers in the city of Corinth!
Winston Churchill famously said that those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it, so we want to take lessons from the past when we can to have a better future. That’s why when you’re at a gas station looking at some kind of fried food that’s been under a heat lamp for three hours and someone walks by and says, “don’t do it” with a flushed face and a look of terror on their face you want to listen to them!
In ch 10 Paul is in the midst of addressing eating food sacrificed to idols and some of the Corinthian Christians believing it’s ok for them to go to a pagan temple and eat food that has been sacrificed. He tells them they need to look back at God’s people before them and be reminded to lay down their pride and steer clear of sin!

Don’t assume God is pleased

Don’t think that just because you are around church and have Christian family and friends that you are in right standing with God and your sin won’t be judged.
Have you ever seen one of those videos where a dog brings it’s owner a dead animal and is really proud and excited about it? So happy to have a gift for their best friend… But the owner is running away screaming. Poor dog is just trying to do something nice and the owner is not so happy about it.
Assuming that God is pleased with you and being wrong is way worse than this, believe it or not.
verses 1-5
Matthew 3:9 ESV
And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.
Don’t think just because life is pretty good or because you come to church on Wednesdays and Sundays or because your parents and grandparents are Christians that you are good. You need to make sure that you are right with God based on his Word.
You can only be saved through faith in Jesus Christ…

Don’t desire evil

Do not fall into sin. Sin has consequences.
When you do bad things, bad things usually happen. Josh came into my office this afternoon with some hand sanitizer and a lighter and said, “I’ve heard this stuff is flammable.” He squirted some on a styrofoam plate and lit it. It didn’t seem like anything was happening and then the plate started to disintegrate. It kept going. We learned that hand sanitizer burns with an invisible flame! He had to jump up and run over to the sink and put it out. Doing bad things usually leads to consequences.
verses 6-10
Mark 9:47 ESV
And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell,
Colossians 3:5 ESV
Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

Escape temptation

Run from temptation so that you don’t fall into sin.
Like those old cartoons where they run away so fast that they run out of their clothes!
verses 11-13
Our God is so good and so faithful. He offers us a way out of sin every time. Do you want it? Are you looking for it?
