TEXT ANALYSIS (v1-15)

I. Jesus Before Pilate (v1-5)
Mark 15:1–5“And early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole Sanhedrin, immediately held council; and binding Jesus, led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate. 2 And Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He answered him and said, “You yourself say it.” 3 And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things. 4 Then Pilate was questioning Him again, saying, “You answer nothing? See how many accusations they bring against You!” 5 But Jesus made no further answer; so Pilate marveled.”
Takeaway: Jesus asserts that Pilate calls Him the King of the Jews
II. Bargaining Over a Murderer (v6-11)
Mark 15:6–11“Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested. 7 And the man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection. 8 And the crowd went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them. 9 And Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he was aware that the chief priests had delivered Him over because of envy. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead.” Mark 15:12–15“And answering again, Pilate was saying to them, “Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?” 12 And they shouted again, “Crucify Him!” 13 But Pilate was saying to them, “Why? What evil did He do?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify Him!” 15 And wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus scourged, he delivered Him over to be crucified.”
Takeaway: The picture of Christ who is innocent being exchanged for a murderer is not intended to be missed by us. We are the criminals what were released and Christ has taken our punishment. If justice can only take place when the doer of the crime is punished then this is unjust. But if the Substitute willingly takes upon Himself the penalty and the criminal freely flees the deserved punishment then their is no coercion, punishment is executed, guilt is eliminated and justice is served.

What does this text say about God (Father, Son, Spirit)

v1 Christ submissively came before the Sanhedrin - regardless of His innocence
v2 Christ is the King of the Jews
v2 Christ knows what everyone says
v5 Christ entrusts Himself to God - does not defend Himself

What does this text say about people (Believers/Unbelievers)

v1,6 People are unjust
v7 People are murderers, insurrectionists
v8 they ask for injustice
v10 they are envious
v11 They are still insurrectionists and malicious instigators of harm
v15 They are not only unjust but cruel

What is something that I need to do - who needs to be told

Mark: Mark 15:15And wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus scourged, he delivered Him over to be crucified.”
I must never wish to satisfy the crowd - no matter how much they might howl
