I’m not good at waiting. I would guess that a lot of you are like me in that. If there’s something I really want then I get anxious and impatient about it. Especially if the situation I’m having to wait in isn’t great. Anybody with me?
I went on a mission trip to Puerto Rico in 2015…
So at the end of the week, I had had fun and enjoyed everyone, but I was ready to get home! So we got up at like 4:00 to get on a school bus and drive an hour and half or so to the airport to catch our flight and head home. When we pulled up to the airport around 6:00am I got an alert on my phone that our flight had been delayed. Until like 3:00 that afternoon. I kept a good face on, but I had thoughts…
In life when things are not what we hoped for, when things are bad, we can get impatient. We may be tempted to give up. To lose hope. To think that God may not be coming through. In those moments, we need to do what Habakkuk does in chapter three. He remembers who God is and sets his hope on Him.

We can trust that God will show his power and deliver on his promises, so we can wait on Him in confidence.

God has and will deliver his people in power.

He remembers what God has done for his people in the past to reassure himself that God will do it again for his people.
When you’re playing sports, or when you’re watching sports, if your team gets in a bad spot and you need something good to happen there’s probably one or two players you look to. Hopefully your team has a stud that you can look to that way. You want that person to be the one with the ball in their hands (or whatever the appropriate saying is) so they can make something happen. Why? It’s because you know they are ready for that because they have done it in the past. You remember the last time they did it and you want them to do it again for your team.
That’s what Habakkuk is thinking right now.
As he’s looking at what God has told him is about to happen… so as a reminder or if you missed last week, here’s what’s about to happen…
So Haby is processing that and he does it by remembering God’s faithfulness in the past so he is encouraged to trust God going forward.
We don’t spend much time studying poetry at Mid-Week, so you poetry lovers, this is your night. All poetry tonight, and it’s good! There’s allusion, double meaning, all the good stuff. Except onomatopoeia.

Job 42:5–6 CSB
I had heard reports about you, but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore, I reject my words and am sorry for them; I am dust and ashes.
I don’t know what’s going on in your life, but no matter what it is God hasn’t abandoned you. He’s still with you. He’s still powerful. He still saves his people.
Whatever you’ve got going on…
Look at God’s track record. Look in Scripture. Look in your own life, He hasn’t abandoned you. He hasn’t failed you and He never will.
This life isn’t easy because our enemies still have power. Our enemies are Satan, evil, sin. But Jesus is coming back one day to crush them. Strip them from foot to neck.
Knowing that, you wait on Jesus and his victory with patient confidence like Habakkuk does!

So we can trust in Him no matter what we wait through.

We can look at our situation and still rejoice in God!
I’ve got a few tattoos. They don’t feel good when you get them… But I was able to endure that unpleasantness because I knew the end result.
On a much larger scale, this is how we endure the suffering of this life through confidence and patience in the Lord.
Philippians 4:13 CSB
I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.
Whatever you are walking through Christian, lift your eyes to the Lord and see He is still on his throne. He is still good. He is still your strength. He is your provider and your Savior. He will provide all you need. Rejoice in Him!
But I need to be clear before we close, you can only rejoice, He is only the God of your salvation if you have called on the name of Jesus in faith…
